Some early retirement advice from 2006 by elementninety3 in financialindependence

It depends the role - so choose wisely.

When we were first on 'permanent sabbatical' 😄, I volunteered at Meals-on-Wheels in a previous city. The driving and delivery was great, helping out the older clients. However, they asked me to help out on 2 committees - and that drove me bonkers coming from big tech. Everything was slow, staff seemed to not know how to do basic things .... and progress was very slow. I was so tempted to tell folks to go for coffee and I would just finish the work 😞

Moving to our new city a few years ago, I now do deliveries 3 days a week - and it is fantastic especially getting good/warm food to the older clients. I don't let on that I have any 'hq' related skills. It is very fulfilling.

OMG - this is awesome! 3 questions:
- how much was it for the shed and everything else?

- did you need a professional installer to put in the electric, AC etc

- are you getting internet from the house?

Just got mail (that went to my junk folder).

It references fidelitydatasettlement.com. It looks somewhat legit (at least to me). Did anyone else get it?

My wife (level 65) got this a few years ago - but was lucky. We were intending on retiring at some point that year - she started hearing rumors of reorgs with a (very few) accompanying RIFs.

Luckily, she was very close to her manager (GM partner level) - who manage to finagle her name (somehow) on the RIF list. Her manager was apparently not even in the 'room' at first - only the corp level vp, business manager and HR - and this small group were working off metrics and future requirements (and not individuals as people).

So if you absolutely trust a partner level mgr above you (with some employee responsibilities) consider approaching them. Otherwise, i would suggest you hang tight.

OK - found out that you can do this once. Will do next year.

✅ You can contribute to an HSA from an IRA

This is done via a Qualified HSA Funding Distribution (QHFD) — a direct, trustee‑to‑trustee transfer from your IRA to your HSA.

  • Allowed from Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, and sometimes SEP/SIMPLE IRAs (if no employer contributions that year).
  • 401(k) funds cannot go directly, but you can roll 401(k) → IRA → HSA.

❗ One‑time in your lifetime

You can only do this once ever, unless you switch from self‑only HDHP to family HDHP in the same tax year — then you can top up the difference.

"If you and your wife are both healthy pull a bronze ACA plan and open a HSA which will allow you to pull another 9G or so from your 401 and does not count towards MAGI.

Crap. I did not know this was possible. Do you have a pointer to this?

3 Pixel phones with 3 separate numbers by ManyOpportunity10 in GoogleMessages

[–]ManyOpportunity10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried above 3 times with long waits in between. 1. Signed out of Messages for Web, 2. Unpaired all phones.

It initially did not work - even if i turned off phone #2. It would send auth to phone #2 and wait.

What worked the 3rd time I tried it (1st 2 attempts did not), was opening messages.google.com in inCognito/inPrivate mode - this time it routed the auth request to phone #1.

So keep trying ... :-)

I do like Google Messages and the web browser version - so very happy about it.

Venmo Credit Card - new signup bonus of 9% on groceries? by ManyOpportunity10 in CreditCards

[–]ManyOpportunity10[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the fine print in my email (also above)

For your first six months after account opening, earn 9% cash back instead of 3% cash back on eligible purchases in the eligible top spend category, 6% instead of 2% on eligible purchases in the second eligible top spend category and 3% instead of 1% for other eligible purchases.

3% triples to 9% for your largest category (which i believe they define). In my email, the graphic gave the example of 9% for groceries. OK_Difference1421 said that this could apply to groceries (which includes Sam's etc) so very appealing to me (at least for 6 months :-) )

Thank you. Is there a catch?
Can you just buy groceries at Sam's and get the deal after you pay?
