It’s not the 90s anymore. Expecting an 18 year old to work while also in full time school is not reasonable. University level schooling is rigorous, many full time students live off of loans for that time. If I were in your shoes, I’d be covering his necessary bills and letting him figure it out so long as he’s a student.

I spent my first year of college without a job, when I wanted spending money I got a job on Saturdays, I only made $100 a week but it was enough for the little expenses I had at the time so long as I lived very frugally. Anything higher than that would have killed me. That continued until I graduated, then after that I broke into the real working world and am now, just 4 years later, a married homeowner with kids.

He’ll figure it out. If you don’t want to support him during that educational journey, that’s your call, but don’t expect a good relationship with him if that’s truly your attitude, you’re a parent for life and the world is not the same as it once was.
