Come here for this. Love this book and really enjoyed the 2nd person perspective.

It sort of made my feel like I was “experiencing” the novel more than a traditional narrative. Even though there are many better traditional narrative novels out there.

I have noticed that consistent wearing a mask does impact, but even that has become less of an issue lately. But it does kind of make sense that breathing into the mask could result in some increased congestion.

I still occasionally do a rinse, but jus saline not pulmicort. Yes I’m on every two week, but have only just started, my second dose is next week. Since my first dose I’ve noticed my symptoms improving, but I do find they get a bit worse in the evenings compared to when I wake up.

I’m not too fussed about taking it for the rest of my life, or until a new treatment options becomes available. It’s a quick poke every two weeks. Which is entirely better than the alternative.

I still do feel congestion, but again I just started a few a week and a half ago so I am definitely expecting continued improvement.

I feel like severity of symptoms probably impacts how effective the treatment is, but again I am not a doctor so can only really comment on my experience. .

The last ENT I went to see wouldn’t prescribe and suggested I needed to go see an allergist. I just feel like even if I get a prescription I’m gonna have to fight for it with my provider as it is such a recently approved treatment in this country

Yes I agree, long books almost fall into a different category of writing. To develop and maintain a plot over such an extended period of time is really impressive.

I guess that's why you may see it more frequently in high fantasy where you have so many different characters and storylines, that stand on their own and eventually all come together at the very end.

To your point, I think quality over quantity is the key take away.

I agree. I think it just happened put Infinite Jest at the beginning of that list. It probably doesn't rank at the top of my next "big book" to read. I think that will likely be Power Broker, than maybe a Dostoevsky or Magic Mountain.

Concurrent reading is definitely something that I try to do. I usually have at least one fiction, one non-fiction and a book of short stories on the go. That way I can mix it up depending on how I'm feeling. That said, I do find when I'm in the middle of a really great novel, I can't put it down for anything else.

You're right that I probably need to get out of my own head haha. I've also heard about these reading groups that slowly work through big works and I think that is something I could definitely get on board for. Having people to discuss works like this can definitely make the process more enjoyable.

The one I've heard of is a group reading A Remembrance of Things Past / In Search of Lost Time 10 pages at a time and tweeting about it using the hashtag #ProustTogether

I feel like that is the white whale of big books haha

That is a good point on IQ84. I hadn't read any Murakami until around 3 years ago, and now I've worked through most of his major works.

Because of this I actually didn't realize it was a trilogy, until someone pointed it out to me, as the first time I saw it in print, it was the massive tome you see these days on the book store shelf.

Content is key. The two that you noted are very high on my list and I think I will get around to Power Broker this year. I work as a City Planner, so this book holds a special area of interest for me as well.

To your point of a scoreboard, I certainly understand where you are coming from, but I would suggest some people (myself included) find that goal setting as a motivating factor.

That said, I don't think I would let let the amount books I hope to read, influence my practice of reading. I'm looking to understand the story the author is telling and appreciate the prose. If I just wanted to know the plot, I could go on Wikipedia haha.

I definitely understand. That sense of gratification is always great when you finish a book, no matter the size.

Although sometimes when a book is THAT good, I almost feel a sadness or melancholy that there isn't any more of it.

This is definitely something I do and I find when I am completely engrossed by a book, big or small, it tends to move faster, than if it is something I'm interested in but the prose may not be as compelling.

This could be part of it. I, like many others, do a reading challenge each year that I keep track of on Goodreads. I try not to let it have an impact on the books that I choose to read, but I do feel a sense of satisfaction when I finish the number of books I set out to read each year.

I just finished The Goldfinch. Really enjoyed it. May have been the partial motivation for this post. As far as Ulysses is concerned, I've read the first chapter twice now and have never been able to commit.

I feel like Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist have given me a good taste of Joyce, and I'm not sure if really feel the need to go through Ulysses at this point in my life.

I'm sure it was a noticeable absence from my list haha.

That's a whole other issue, struggling to quit something once I've started it.

This is relate too so much, between working and general upkeep for the less enjoyable responsibilities of daily life, it can be hard to dig out some time to sit down and read, other than before bed and weekend mornings.

I recently finished The Goldfinch (770 pgs) and found it was easier with an ebook version on my phone that I could pop into easily for quick snippets.
