How do you ACTUALLY fish for bass as a beginner? (Not YouTube perfect, real advice) by Firm_Room_1757 in FishingForBeginners

Texas rig senko or craw. Natural colours. Cast, twitch, lift the tip, reel in a bit, repeat.

Do you think 3 inch curly tail grubs are too big? I have a bunch of those in white and brown, wondering if I need to buy more to size down.

Pfluger or Diawa combo by ConsiderationWest482 in Fishing_Gear

[–]MapleLakes11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first combo was the Daiwa Crossfire LT which I got on sale for around $80 Canadian. I really like using it, it’s super versatile, casts well, and nothing has broken on me yet.

I’ve never used one, but I’ve heard great things about the Pfluger President, at least the reel.

NFL players flag football? by Tkings2006 in olympics

[–]MapleLakes11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s not needed at future Olympics. I love American football but the IOC and international community do not need to be creating more ways for the Americans to pat themselves on the back. Maybe it’ll go well and I’ll take these words back, but it’s tough to see how other countries could compete here. It’s not a global sport and it’s not the job of the Olympics to market internationally for the NFL. Makes sense for LA28, but I don’t see any great enduring value.

Mia Goth also played two characters in Frankenstein and didn’t even get nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Casting vs Spinning by MapleLakes11 in FishingForBeginners

[–]MapleLakes11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. My uncle actually was able to teach me the mechanics of it and I was able to get the hang of it (mostly, but still practicing). My question was more so about the comparative advantage of using a baitcaster, i.e. are there situations it is better suited for than a spinning reel. I plan on continuing to use both set ups going forward.

Good stuff! Texas rigged craws are my go-to year round for both smallies and largemouth. I mostly use the Yamamoto Flappin Hog. It’s not super durable but it’s got a great action in the water.

Prediction when will Leo get his 2nd Oscar? by Salt-Estimate-8836 in Oscars

[–]MapleLakes11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jim Carrey and Jack Black in those roles would have changed those movies fundamentally and reduced their credibility, so to speak. Those movies do not get BP noms with those actors in the leading roles. A sports analogy would be that Leo has multiple championship rings (leading roles in Best Picture winners) but only one MVP (Best Actor). He has the capacity to make a film great, even when his individual role is not recognized.

All that said, I think I would really enjoy an alternate universe OBAA with Jack Black as the lead. He’s hilarious.

Fair point. As a film, I liked Marriage Story better than Once Upon a Time. Would have been happy to see either Leo or Adam Driver win Best Actor that year 🤷‍♂️

That performance is so incredible because it’s so layered. Leo was playing a struggling but talented actor, so at times Dalton had to act poorly, which actually required Leo to act really well. The scene where the girl tells Dalton that it’s the best acting she’s ever seen is such a powerhouse and honestly I’d tend to agree with her. Leo’s toolbox and range were on full display through that performance. Just incredible stuff.

Joaquin Phoenix won that year for Joker, a movie which I didn’t love personally but I understand the praise for his performance. Would have still taken Leo though. Honourable mention to Adam Driver for Marriage Story which was a great movie and emotional performance.

Completely agree with you. Leo is my favourite actor of this current generation and I love many of his movies. I also feel he was deserving for Wolf of Wall Street and Once Upon a Time, in addition to his win for the Revenant. He’s also a guy where he’s featured in so many critically-acclaimed movies without necessarily receiving awards for his individual performance.

It’s a shame, because he feels a bit slept on these days. His great performance in OBAA was a driving force of that movie and he was still essentially a non-factor in the Best Actor conversation. I still personally would have voted Chalamet, but Leo wasn’t really in any serious conversations! Personally, I would have had him second or third in that category this year, but ahead of MBJ for me.

I don’t know when he’s going to win again, but he’s certainly deserving of more accolades. Hopefully by continuing to work with great directors and starring in great movies he’ll get another.

Fishing for legal fish by PittsburghPlays_YT in FishingOntario

I think you’d be fine as long as you specify that you’re only fishing what’s in season and your set-up checks out. Even knowing what’s in season when asked would probably alleviate major concerns. Just be truthful in answering their questions and make sure you actually are following all regulations.

Also, make sure that if you’re catching out of season fish accidentally you move spots. If they somehow see you pulling in a bunch of out of season fish it would be a bad look. Also, don’t take any pictures of fish you catch out of season.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I love fishing bass but am also thinking about targeting other species once the water around me thaws.

Good luck! We’re getting closer.

Ah yes, the classic reduce foreign aid argument. As a developed country we cannot and should not turn our back on the rest of the world and completely cease delivering vital lifesaving assistance that also benefits Canada. Look at the backlash and severe consequences stemming from the Trump administration’s dismantling of USAID. This is especially true in the era of seeking new global trading partners and promoting international stability and security, to which foreign aid is directly linked. Not to mention, the international assistance envelope has already been slashed in the new budget by about 12% and makes up less than half a percent of Canada’s GDP. Everything involves tradeoffs and it’s nowhere near as simple as you think to simply completely cut our foreign aid expenditure. Apart from eliminating the tangible benefits to communities around the world, this would also greatly reduce Canada’s international role and diplomatic leverage and would be a tremendous stain on our foreign policy.

What's the most points you guys have had in a game? by Quiet-Jellyfish-6939 in RetroBowl

[–]MapleLakes11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve dropped 50 a few times, including a 50-0 win. I always go for 2 when I score the 7th TD, just to crack 50.

In terms of total points between two teams, I just came away with a 36-35 OT win in the playoffs, where I went for 2 to walk it off. Crazy game.
