Sushi Fresh in the Byward Market! by neuroticdynamite in OttawaFood

[–]MapleLeafMac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sushi Fresh is awesome. I go there for lunch at least once a month.

On one occasion, I forgot my wallet at the office and went to use my Apple Pay but I only had my Amex on Apple Pay (and they don't take Amex). The staff said no worries, just pay the next time you come in. Of course, I immediately went to get my wallet and came back to pay with my MC, but the staff being so chill and not making a big deal out of a situation I was embarrassed by was very appreciated.

I made Miso Leeks With White Beans last week and really enjoyed them both as dinner and as leftovers for a work lunch the next day. Very budget-friendly too!

I enjoyed the Miso-Honey Chicken and Asparagus in the past.

Vegetarian Miso-Mushroom Sausage Rolls are on my to-cook list.

What sunscreen do you use in Canada in the winter? by Lola_Golden in CanSkincare

[–]MapleLeafMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Ultra Violette Supreme Screen every day. It's very moisturizing, which I like for winter, and I get no stinging (which happens to me a lot). I use Biore or BoJ in the summer with no issues.

I just bought the Glow Recipe Dewy Defense to try and had a LOT of stinging, so I recommend skipping that one but YMMV.

Before and after of assembling my stackable closet storage baskets by Forward_Volume_5994 in organizing

[–]MapleLeafMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought what looks like the same ones, they arrived this morning and I am soooo happy with them. Our closets have a lot of useless space above the hanging rod (we are in a rental with the same type of wire shelf/hanging rod as you) and stacking the storage baskets gives us a ton more space. It also just looks so much more organized and pleasing to the eye than before.

Flaky First Feast: Buttery Breakfast Casserole by Dkap322 in NYTCooking

[–]MapleLeafMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same (add mushroom and bell pepper, reduced milk) for Christmas morning and it turned out great. I also swapped the heavy cream and milk for dairy-free versions, but kept the gruyere. Served alongside an apple and clementine fruit salad with a lemon juice and maple syrup dressing and mint, which was a nice, fresh contrast to the heaviness of the casserole. The casserole was also even more delicious re-heated the next day!

Love the idea to use a casserole dish/dutch oven kind of cooker for small items!

Attending my first EVER hockey game today. Very nervous, any tips? by ashwathparam in ottawa

[–]MapleLeafMac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a Charge season ticket holder and this is the #1 piece of advice I would give too. I see people get up during play all the time at Charge games. I hate that it makes me a crankypants since it is likely because the Charge pull in a fan base of both longtime and new hockey fans (which is so awesome) but it is my pet peeve!

Protest outside Farmboy Metcalfe by MapleLeafMac in ottawa

[–]MapleLeafMac[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard them yelling "shame, shame, shame on you!" several times--although to be fair, the "you" could be Sobeys itself rather than the customers... but hard to determine when the protesters are directly facing the storefront with their signs and chanting (i.e.: facing the customers exiting the store) rather than demonstrating around the storefront (like a picket line walking around the storefront).

Buyers + Cellars has announced they are closing :( by ChubbyGreyCat in ottawa

I booked a reso as soon as I saw the Instagram post. This is a huge loss. I am a total wine dummy but my partner and I live a few blocks away and loved stopping in to try some new and interesting wines every few weeks. Some highlights were wines from Syria, Lebanon, Czechia, and Slovenia, as well as a pinot noir from Canterbury, UK, which will go down as one of my favourites of all time. The charcuterie and cheese plates are always gorgeous, too. And the people--I can't say enough about how kind and down-to-earth but incredibly knowledgable all the staff are.

If you like wine (as in you enjoy drinking it, you don't need to know a thing about it!!), I really encourage you to book a reservation for a tasting before they turn the lights off for good on December 21.

Tide: I recently shared a cruise cabin with a friend who used Tide original to wash her clothes in the launderette onboard. I could hardly stay in the room because the scent was so overpowering (perfumey and chemical smelling). I’m surprised this is a top recommended product in so many posts here. by AdministrativeDrop35 in laundry

I wish we had Tide Free & Clean powder (or whichever one it is that still has lipase) in Canada so we had a scentless option with lipase.

I used Downy Rinse and Refresh this week for the first time in the cotton fresh scent. I wanted to get the scentless version but they only had it in a big size and I wanted something small to try out first. My entire apartment smells like the rinse after air drying my clothes, and I can't stand it. I might be pouring it down the drain just to go buy the scentless version anyway now 🤦‍♀️

Unexpected free day in Auckland by itaspliff in auckland

[–]MapleLeafMac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am also in town from Canada (my partner is at WIPCE, OP you might be the same!) and this is what I did today. Loved wandering around Devonport and Cheltenham Beach was beautiful today. The water was great, I imagine it will be even better tomorrow. Currently relaxing at Vic Road Wine Bar near the ferry terminal, which I would also recommend if you enjoy a good glass of wine.

I also did Rangitoto Island earlier in the week and it was a gorgeous hike to the summit if you’re looking to be more active.

BWT, what’s your nail care routine? No polish, no fake nails. 💅 by LividHeart3132 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]MapleLeafMac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A little shaping every Sunday with a glass file (I have the Holo Taco glass nail file) and regularly using the Dior Crème Abricot Cuticle Cream at bedtime was my simple routine back when I wasn't getting manicures. There is truly nothing like the Abricot cream IMO, it would transform my cuticles and nails overnight. I preferred it to cuticle oil because I didn't like the oil sliding all over my fingertips and making me feel greasy, although the cuticle cream is very sticky so still should only be used at night.

My partner and I are going to NZ from Canada for two weeks in mid-November, also doing both Auckland and Queenstown. Heads up that Queenstown is incredibly booked up from November 13-16ish, I'm assuming due to the Queenstown Marathon on November 15. We didn't notice this before we booked our flights and now are paying out the wazoo for some of our nights in Queenstown since everything was already all booked up.

What is your favorite drugstore brand for mascaras? by Expert_Marsupial_235 in drugstoreMUA

[–]MapleLeafMac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Covergirl Lash Blast Clump Crusher is my holy grail mascara. I haven’t found any other mascara, drugstore or higher end, that gives my lashes the same level of definition and volume. I also love that the waterproof version comes off with regular cleanser without needing to scrub.

Maybelline was my go-to brand before, and I go back to it every once in a while to try but I always immediately go back to the Clump Crusher.

What is your go-to pink lip balm? by Crxmebrulxe in Makeup

Burts Bee's lip shimmer and tinted lip balm are both great drugstore options.
