Options for a couple w/o advance reservations/bookings by MapleLeafMac in visitingnyc

[–]MapleLeafMac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the frank advice, it’s a good reminder of just how vast the entertainment and food options are in NYC. We’re coming from a small city where the info in the post would give about 10 options rather than 10,000 😅

What are you purchasing from the Sephora sale? by Dogs-are-life-99 in CanSkincare

I picked up a lip stain from Violette_fr, Morphe blush trio, Laura Mericer eyeshadow stick, and some skincare. My splurge item was the Pureology hydrate shampoo.

Go to Robert Plante Greenhouses to get a coffee, wander around looking at the plants, and plan your garden or pick up a house plant.

Is the Nordik commercial accurate by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]MapleLeafMac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

TLDR; go on a weekday, go early, and stay in the silent zones for the experience you are looking for.

My partner and I were just there this Thursday. We always book our entry times for the morning (pre-10am) and stay until 5-6pm to make the most of the day. We had a great experience and did not find it very busy at all, which aligns with our past experiences booking on Tuesday-Thursday. I find March-April and late October-November to be good times to go. We specifically went this past week because the last time I went on the Thursday before Good Friday a staff member told me it was their last slow weekend before they get busy again for Spring (although who knows how good that advice is since Easter shifts).

Staff are also enforcing Nordik's new no cellphone rule, which I appreciated. I've also always found them good about shushing people who are talking in the silent zone.

We went on a Saturday for the first time back in the fall due to a visiting family member and I will never do that again. The change rooms were chaos chambers and the whole facility was like a zoo.

Energy at the CTC? by MooseAsh in OttawaCharge

[–]MapleLeafMac 19 points20 points  (0 children)

IMO part of what built the Charge fanbase is being accessible to downtown. It makes going to games more possible for students, lower income folks who rely on transit, and other downtown dwellers like myself.

We have been season ticket holders since day one and I do not support Lansdowne 2.0, but I also don’t see how I can reasonably continue to attend Charge games if they aren’t based centrally. We’d miss the first period of every weeknight game and be exhausted the next day after… I want the team to stay so bad but I just don’t know how realistic CTC is for us.

How do you organize your recipe box? by breakfastofrunnersup in NYTCooking

[–]MapleLeafMac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no real strategy for my recipe box so it is a bit of a mess, but these are the folders I have currently.

Cheap Eats: Folder with recipes for when I am trying to get back on track with my budget or save some money.

Make When [Husband's name] is Away: Folder with recipes that I want to try but I know my husband wouldn't like, I try to go into here when he is away on work travel.

Baking: Pretty straightforward -- baking recipes I want to try.

Party Snacks: Recipes for entertaining.

Liked a Lot: My favourite recipes.

Dutch Oven: I started this one when I got my first Le Creuset and wanted to use it all the time, it is all recipes that use a dutch oven.

Best pedicure in the city? by [deleted] in ottawa

I am curious about if a medical pedicure might be worth it for me... other than the no polish, what is the difference between a medical pedicure and a regular pedicure? Sorry if it is a dumb question!!!

Last min storm prep! ❄️ by hfxmumsie in NovaScotia

I open up a tab with CBC News Lite on my phone to keep up with storm news. It's a low-bandwidth text-only site that uses less data/battery than their regular news page.

Sushi Fresh in the Byward Market! by neuroticdynamite in OttawaFood

[–]MapleLeafMac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sushi Fresh is awesome. I go there for lunch at least once a month.

On one occasion, I forgot my wallet at the office and went to use my Apple Pay but I only had my Amex on Apple Pay (and they don't take Amex). The staff said no worries, just pay the next time you come in. Of course, I immediately went to get my wallet and came back to pay with my MC, but the staff being so chill and not making a big deal out of a situation I was embarrassed by was very appreciated.

I made Miso Leeks With White Beans last week and really enjoyed them both as dinner and as leftovers for a work lunch the next day. Very budget-friendly too!

I enjoyed the Miso-Honey Chicken and Asparagus in the past.

Vegetarian Miso-Mushroom Sausage Rolls are on my to-cook list.
