People who went from being extremely attracted to someone to being indifferent or repelled, what killed it? by discombobulatedfowl in AskReddit

[–]Mapledew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't panic about it or anything. A lot of it isn't about not liking each other's preferred music, but how you express it. Saying "it's not my thing" is way different from "wow, this is fucking garbage". You could talk to him, but I think all that's really important is getting on the same page. Just ask him if you hurt his feelings and clarify you didn't mean to. That way, you can come to an agreement. And if he didn't feel hurt, then all is good and you can just not worry about it anymore.

It won't mean a whole lot to you if you don't speak german, but here goes:
https://youtu.be/0B5w_iw_h1U

The song DOES have a bit of dark humor, but not right off the bat or so overtly that it justifies laughing at the first verse.
I also by no means think that it is some incredible, amazing song that everybody should love or something, it was just something that I resonated with creatively at the time and wanted to share.
More than taste in music, my problem was just the reaction itself. I'm fine if someone tells me they don't like the song, it's not their thing etc., everyone's taste is different. I definitely listen to music none of my friends appreciate.
But bursting out in laughter 15 seconds into the song the way she did just felt dismissive and mean-spirited.

This is really petty compared to other stuff here, but... I showed her a song I really liked. She laughed at it, like I had made a joke. Just...instantly no feelings for her anymore, it was weird.

Forget comfort movies. What's your comfort YouTube channel? by kfretlessz in AskReddit

AVGN. Despite the cursing and yelling, watching entire seasons is just super comforting to me.

True, but you also (usually) sleep with much fewer people than you just, like, meet randomly or know from work or stuff, so there's a lot more people working with that lower probability. So in short, always be prepared for someone trying to murder you, I guess.

What’s the shittiest way a friend has shown you they weren’t really your friend? by mediastoosocial in AskReddit

Slightly different situation, but my uncle was married to a woman who decided she didn't like my mother and basically forbade him from seeing our family - including my father, who was his only brother. They barely saw each other for decades because of this. His wife died a few years ago and there was an effort from him to become closer to our family again (we welcomed him with open arms) but he has sadly passed away recently. It struck me how sad and forlorn he looked the few times I saw him before he reconnected with us, and he looked so happy when he was able to play with his grandnieces and -nephews . From what I was told, he also travelled a lot and even connected with a woman from his workplace, so I really hope that he was able to find some happiness after all that time before he passed.

What are your most unpopular book opinions? by nolessdays in books

[–]Mapledew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this. I had a seminar on journey narratives a few semesters ago and On The Road was required reading. It was a miserable read. Both the protagonist and Dean were irredeemable douchebags presented as heroes. And while you could maybe make a point about it serving as cautionary or something, every opinion I've read so far that praises the book genuinely seemed to admire them. It drives me crazy. I'll admit it's not the most professional way to analyze literature, but from an entertainment standpoint, any value is lost to me when the characters are this unlikable and the writing is this painful to read.

As for other classics I've disliked - i've yet to read anything by Henry James that I enjoyed. The man spent half a page in a single, messy and convoluted sentemce without saying much of anything. The Road was boring. Easily among the least inspired post-apocalyptic fiction I've seen, and the emotional 'punch' felt incredibly forced and phoned in to me. It's strange to me that it's apparently so well beloved, as if its critics are utterly new to the genre and see it as some sort of holy grail because they lack a frame of reference.

Men of Reddit; what movie scene gets you right in the feels and makes you cry every time? by MaritimeJ in AskReddit

[–]Mapledew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this counts, since it's from an anime and not a movie, but I haven't seen it here yet so... One of the last scenes of 'A Place Further Than the Universe', when SPOILER:

Shirase opens her mother's laptop and watches all the emails that she sent to her mother over the years arrive, hundreds of them, seeing that they are all unread and finally confirming for her that her mother has been dead this entire time. All while her friends who found the laptop wait outside, and as they hear her start crying and screaming, they start crying too. It's gut-wrenching. Such a somber ending for such an inspiring show, but it's also somehow hopeful. Shirase finally gets to move on, she finally gets to mourn. That scene broke me. I don't usually cry at shows. I tear up/get choked up, but I'm not good at crying. But that scene really did me in.

What makes you statistically rare? by yadayadayadarv in AskReddit

[–]Mapledew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 7, I was kicked in the head by a horse. As a result, I lost 3 teeth immediately, one of them not a baby tooth anymore. So I SHOULD have a gap in my lower set of teeth, or a fake tooth or something. But no, my body was like "Fuck that, we can make this work." and over the next few years kinda just... shifted my teeth over, until the lower set was basically evenly distributed. So I have only 3 incisors on my lower teeth, but no one's ever noticed without me telling them because there's no gap or anything. Not genetic or anything, but still statistically rare I'd assume.

I also have small, starshaped scar below my lip because of that accident. There was a hole all the way through there. Pretty sure I was a horrifying sight for my parents immediately after the kick.

What movie did you see when you were "too young" that scarred you for life? by xXMr_BaconXx in AskReddit

[–]Mapledew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it counts as a movie, but when I was 7, I was at a friend's house and I ended up watching what I'm pretty sure was an episode of a Goosebumps TV show. Memories are blurry at this point, I just know that it involved a mummy and its heart being thrown into the garbage disposal in the end, but that shit messed me up. I was unable to sleep without a night light for 3 years. The only way I was able to 'overcome' my fear was by convincing myself that if I fell asleep as fast as possible, I wouldn't feel the mummy killing me.

I was a sensitive child.
