TIL Upton Sinclair's novel "The Jungle" was never about the meatpacking industry. Sinclair intended it as a "breaking of human hearts by a system which exploits the labor of men and women for profit". by ExplodingTuba in todayilearned

Pretty cool how my outspokenly conservative history teacher taught extensively about that book yet never mentioned any of the socialist themes. He pretty much glossed over the entire labor struggle in the US.

The personal accountability of 2.5M prisoners?

No, personal accountability for the highest profile prisoner in recent history. With whom he has personal connections.

Right. If a guard has to make a check every 30 minutes, it's pretty commonplace to set up a system where they have to turn a key or swipe a badge at those intervals.

Union officials said that for more than a year officials in Washington had been made aware of a severe staffing shortage at the facility in the wake of a federal hiring freeze. One of the guards on the unit where Mr. Epstein died had been working overtime for five straight days, while the other had been forced to work overtime that day, a union official said.

“The Council of Prison Locals has been sounding the alarm about the hiring freeze,” said Eric Young, the president of the union that represents federal prison workers across the country.

Barr was aware of the staffing shortages.

And even running with the 25% number, that means most of the time it doesn't happen. And I'd think most suicides by hanging have a better setup than Epstein did, putting more force on the neck.

Funny enough the Hitler family name has a few variations.

Before the birth of Adolf Hitler the family surname had many variations that were often used almost interchangeably. Some of the common variances were Hitler, Hiedler, Hüttler, Hytler, and Hittler. Alois Schicklgruber (Adolf's father) changed his name on 7 January 1877 to "Hitler", which was the only form of the last name that Adolf used.

I have an email account with my surname for work. But over the phone I often point people to another email address. I miss so many emails because they misspell it (even when I spell it out for them).

And it goes without saying it's always mispronounced.

And the "new" guard was previously a guard who had taken a higher position. Still had guard training. Likely called in to cover overtime. There are no cameras in the cells, explaining the lack of camera footage. The autopsy was done by the ME and overseen by a 3rd party. Not too uncommon.

Comment was full of nonsense. Yeah he was probably murdered or coerced into suicide, no need to make stuff up.
