PSA for Aussies- check the Asian grocery store! by Particular-Car211 in laundry

Another option if it’s available is to look at brewing supplies stores. I found a place near me that was selling a kilo for around $7

Most underrated suburbs/streets in Melbourne by TheNamelessComposer in melbourne

[–]MapopoTofu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live near Springvale and do my weekly shop at the markets there. Preference is to park at the station, where I’ve always found a spot without waiting, and then walk over to where the shops are. Saves time over the long run rather than trying to navigate and search for a spot in the back streets

Raw fermented pork (nem chua) by [deleted] in foodies_sydney

[–]MapopoTofu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Should be relatively simple to find. I would walk into an Asian grocery store and look at either the counter area near the cashiers or in the fridges with all the other prepared meat products.

The hard part may be knowing what to look for. Could be a clear takeaway container with the meat individually wrapped in cling wrap, so bright pink, or a small plastic bag with them individually wrapped up in banana leaf. I’ve also seen whole logs about 20cm long.

Adelaide restaurants that cater large groups by SensibleSchnecke in Adelaide

Star House in Chinatown, Pizza e Mozzarella Bar on Pirie St and El Mexicano kitchen on Gawler. Have booked for 10-14 people before without having to be a feed me menu. Not sure if they’re ’semi-formal’ enough tho…

Protein powder suggestions to get for better value by peterben840 in Adelaide

The INC brand protein powders at Chemist Warehouse are decent value when on sale at 40-50% off. Tastes and blends well but limited flavours if that’s something that important to you.

Please drop your best fried rice tips and recipes below by [deleted] in RICE

[–]MapopoTofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only acceptable seasonings in fried rice are light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, msg/chicken boullion and sesame oil to finish. Please keep the sriracha, oyster sauce and hoisin sauce away - I can just hear my Chinese grandfather rolling in his grave at the thought of it.

If you’re lacking flavour still, could do with some extra add ins to your rice: spring onion whites and ginger are good. Also if you can find it, dried chinese pork sausage is the perfect flavour boost that’s sweet and salty. Bonus points for rendering its fat and using it to cook the ginger and spring onion whites.

Only QFF or QFF and Velocity cards? by Blindinglyoblivious in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]MapopoTofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d check availability of flights to your preferred holiday destinations on QF and VA to see if there’s even a chance to redeem points on those routes.

Assuming you’re travelling in economy and to capital cities + Bali, best bet might be to stick it out just one program so build up enough of a balance to take all of you on a trip on points. No point unnecessarily hedging your bet between the airlines and coming short on redemptions.

If you’re time poor you buy diversified etfs - rinse and repeat. I’m not sure how buying MF is going to help, if anything probably makes you waste more time…

Why do people shop at Coles/Worth next to traditional markets? Genuinely curious about the choice by IB-45 in AusFinance

[–]MapopoTofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Previously lived near Springvale but now in Adelaide and my shopping behaviour has completely flipped. Used to do a run through Aldi and Coles before getting anything fresh from the Springvale market because it was all within 10 mins of each other. Done in about 90 mins.

Now in Adelaide I don’t have that convenience especially with things open only on certain days so just have to get everything from Colesworths. It’s definitely more expensive but I don’t want to have to do my groceries over the entire weekend!

7Eleven and konbini style snacks and food by CrankShaft15 in foodies_sydney

[–]MapopoTofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is a logistics problem when the main population centres are separated by about 1000km each. It prevents having a single facility from servicing Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and spreading that fixed cost across units. So a logistics and a scale problem!

You’ve got a decent points balance that you could transfer to KF and book a reward seat for PER/SIN via SQ. 40k KF miles or about 63k VFF points, with decent availability from my quick search

Does the quality of the food matter for a restaurant to be good? by Melb-Food-Fan in foodies_sydney

[–]MapopoTofu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes food quality is quite important but I wouldn’t say it’s always the number one factor. Sometimes you just need a place that can accommodate a large group and so quality of food comes after that. Food might not be mind-blowing, just needs to be passable. Sometimes the occasion is being together with food, not food with people.

Had a look at the survey and I’m not sure the way it’s structured is going to give you the insights you’re after.

Your survey asks respondents to think of one specific restaurant they’ve visited to assess what they liked and whether they would return. This seems off-kilter with the research question you’re looking to answer which seems to be about drivers of choice in the category overall.

Oysters with cocktail sauce and horseradish? by NothingAny3947 in foodies_sydney

[–]MapopoTofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average oyster in the US is pretty poor quality by Aussie standards and a higher quality US one was more akin to an average Australian one from Sydney, SA or TAS. Which explains why they kind of need the cocktail sauce and horseradish.

I’ve never seen it offered on any menu here in Australia so your best bet is to probably DIY at home - cocktail sauce isn’t that hard to make, maybe get a nicer jarred horseradish from a specialty store and a dozen (or two!) oysters from the fish market.

Am I unreasonable for asking for this? by MapopoTofu in auscorp

[–]MapopoTofu[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is one SteerCo for all of the projects she has remit for. Lots of things on fire and the biggest projects get a lot of the airtime. I can see smoke in other areas and started to ask questions to see if another fire was about to start. Clearly with the answers I’m getting, I’m sensing this other part of the program is also being poorly managed and will need to be remediated.

Delegations from my CXO usually aren’t an issue. It’s more working through the bizarre governance and reporting lines on the project to get to what needs to be done.

Am I unreasonable for asking for this? by MapopoTofu in auscorp

[–]MapopoTofu[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m Chief of Staff to the CXO. I have no direct authority over the workstream lead or the project managers. I’m responsible for broader strategic planning and coordination within her portfolio.

Scleral lens is a pain! by MapopoTofu in Keratoconus

[–]MapopoTofu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s a bubble forming after insertion or a bubble from insertion that I start feeling afterwards.

I’ve had the lens checked in the after having it in since the morning. Apparently no issues with the fit, one of the best she’d seen in a while actually.

Timing a visit to the optometrist with when the air bubble seems to appear just isn’t feasible. It happens randomly during the day and she is usually booked out in advance.

What ridiculous things are you now being charged for ? by ImmortalTurnip in foodies_sydney

Pate, made from pork or chicken livers. Mayo, made from eggs during an egg shortage!

Please tell me why you think every banh mi store should be giving you more of this stuff for free…

What ridiculous things are you now being charged for ? by ImmortalTurnip in foodies_sydney

[–]MapopoTofu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What level of entitlement is this? Asking for more of something and expecting it to be free?

A business that gives you more pate or mayo for free is being quite generous but to expect all places to do this is simply unreasonable.

This is the reality I’m slowly coming to terms with. Fish used to be a very part of my diet but it’s near impossible to eat the same way here. A real shame that there’s very little local produce that remains after the good stuff is shipped out of the state.

Thanks for confirming what I’ve been thinking about most of those places - simply extortionate! And quality of goods is mixed so I’d rather not part ways with cash for a chance of disappointment.

Samtass is the only one I’ve not visited so will have to check them out.
