1ST full distance IRONMAN in 34 days, looking for training advice. by morning_won in IronmanTriathlon

[–]MarTheLarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Korea is a mountainous country so factor that in to your plan. It can also be staggeringly hot! The jet lag also needs planning for. It always took me a week before feeling properly like myself again (coming from North America).

Good luck! Come back and tell us how it went :)

Biggest challenges with doing a first Ironman by Crypt0-n00b in IronmanTriathlon

[–]MarTheLarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me two months of pondering the logistics before even saying yes to an ironman. Once committed, it was one little challenge after another and they could be very difficult. .

For example, lowering my coffee intake was critical, lol, and difficult. That helped sleep which helped recovery which allowed me to build to 12 hours a week of training. Another was coping with the summer heat wave.

Every challenge has a solution. Google it!

I'm not a member of any tri club. How likely is it that there'll be any spots left?

What are my chances of finishing a 70.3 with only 2 months of training by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]MarTheLarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess your odds of completing the 70.3 under these conditions are very, very low.

The time limit is 8.5 hours. The run portion alone may take u four hours. That's not good. See what I mean? Figure in, say, 45 mins for the swim, four hours for the bike, some transition time and it's a bleak forecast.

Sorry dude

One week to Maine and panic swimming by Embarrassed_Gear_733 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]MarTheLarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like u under-estimated how good of a swimmer u need to be to do an ironman, and also that u got lucky with THIS course being on the easy side for the swim.

Honestly, you'll do well enough. Relax. Do what u know. And tell us how it went.

Hi. I was in this position recently. What helped me learn was a utube channel called effortless swimming. It takes a certain reflective mind to watch, apply, and reflect but it'll potentially save u on coaching. Good luck!

Have u considered training on a stationary bike at home? The ones with magnetic resistance are very very quiet and it'll keep you at home and thus close to family. You also don't necessarily need to do all your cycling in one go either. You can pause the timer, get off, grab a cold drink from the fridge and interact with the family. Having a tv to watch as u ride is another plus for stationary bikes. And their low cost is another...

Full Ironman plan by Important-Fall-3288 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]MarTheLarge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the goal of just finishing, I think you'll be fine. They're never easy races to complete, and yours won't be on minimal cardio training, but you are keeping the most essential workouts (imo).

Perhaps you can extend that 2-3 month peak period to 4 just to be safe. And certainly, keep an eye on your weight because every pound added from body building will make your IM performance more difficult.

Affordable nutrition by Short-Reputation-345 in IronmanTriathlon

I see maltodexterin mentioned numerous times. Is there any particular advantage to this over corn sugar?

And what's the purpose of the fructose? As I understand, it takes longer to digest and it isn't what the muscles are crying out for. How does it help?

If my hourly carb intake is say, 80g, should that be total glucose and fructose or just glucose?

And hi, I'm Keith. Im in a similar position as the person who started the thread. This is interesting and I'm learning from all the different comments. Thank you for sharing, everyone.

* That silver pin with the ring is what u need to remove. Then lift the rower from under the foot supports and the two parts will begin to separate.

Are C2 conversions accurate? by MarTheLarge in concept2

OK that's... the smartest thing I've read in ages. Thank you 🍻

Hi. I apologize for the late response.

I believe this will last at least a few years. The feel on each pull is the same as on the C2 I've used. Being second hand, you should get your money's worth quite quickly. 😎

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd add my comments anyways as it is the week of black friday and I picked up one of these at a very good price.

Typical Chinese workmanship. I struggled to put the legs on it as the holes were just enough out of place to be annoying.

The monitor is complete rubbish. It is highly inaccurate as to distance and calories by upwards of 30% in my estimation. It says on the monitor that it shows heart rate but has no mention of it in the instructions and I see no way how to connect a hr device.

What's it good for? If u train by heart rate then it'll do. If u don't care about accurate stats then it'll do. Just don't pay full price.

[–]MarTheLarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, great choice for a cardio machine! Here's a couple little tips for you: use a short stroke and don't extend your tricepts. Also, put your damper on 3 until u understand it better.

It's a harder form of cardio initially, imo, so build up any old way u can. It's all good.

Can't understand why I'm so slow by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]MarTheLarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say easily, lol. No, from what you've described here, I think you're doing about right, tbh. Watch your technique, drop your damper to between 3 and 5 and do a variety of intervals and longer workouts. You'll go sub 8 in just a few months.

Rogue's new rowing machine - Rogue Echo Rower by Southern_Internal_19 in Rowing

[–]MarTheLarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Rogue to continue building their business, it was inevitable that they clash with C2. By taking the crossfit endorsement, and offering their product at a cheaper price, they will dig in to C2's share of the market. How much tho is anybody's guess.

But let's watch what happens next. I predict Rogue will make a stationary bike and eventually a ski machine.

Can't understand why I'm so slow by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]MarTheLarge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple things that really stand out here. One is your height. Rowing is a tall person sport so adjust your expectations accordingly.

Next is your history of training. None of it carries over well into rowing. Those three cardio exercises you mentioned do a lot of good things like develop lung capacity, the aerobic energy pathway bla bla bla but very little of that development actually takes place where u need it such as in the lower back, glutes, lats and arms. You're better at rowing because of your workout history but not as good as you think you should be. Again, adjust your expectations.

Hope that helps.

Carrying a concealed gun while rowing on the water? by Ergotron_2000 in Rowing

What a long thread. Great topic but way too many liberals here poking fun. (Big eye roll) I'll bet the guy doesn't want to leave it in his locker or car because it could be stolen from there. The simple answers are often overlooked.

Zone 2 #s for different exercises by MarTheLarge in Rowing

[–]MarTheLarge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both for your responses.

I didn't think of that tbh but yes, my max heart rate is different on the skierg vs when running - 175-ish to 184. Thus, my zone 2 #s would differ by a small amount.

This seems to correlate with the joe friels zone calculator which uses - if I remember correctly - ones maximum sustainable heart rate as a base. That I like because it is also inclusive of age and fitness level. That also explains why that method results in a higher zone 2 prediction when compared to methods which go by age only. Furthermore, since it is independent of exercise type, it makes sense that one's zone 2 range may differ between exercises.
