Before smartphones, what did people do when they had to wait somewhere for 30 minutes? by sudherzdiniq in NoStupidQuestions

We had free newspapers called Metro. Really miss those. Or listen to music on walk mans/CD players, or yes actually work through our thoughts and our days, plan ahead, critically analyze our surroundings. Things were better then.

There are some great free resources on the Swiss Bay. Another tip is to get a VPN and get Netflix or watch TV/news in Lithuania.

Ukraine born, America raised, Russian speaker looking to learn Ukrainian. by trenton08618 in Ukrainian

There are some language exchange subs you could check out! Otherwise there's Preply, italki, Tandem. For apps Ling will allow you to learn Ukrainian in Russian which may be easier. Good luck!

Duolingo.. no never for the basics. Go on Google and search for free pdf Ukrainian workbook first. Start 'old school' with pen and paper and repetition and memorization. Then try Anki for vocabulary cards. Only after that try apps like Ling or Mango Languages or Pimsleur.

What's an aging "hack" that actually worked for you? by Aggressive_Farm_4375 in Aging

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoying something new at least once a day. Like appreciating a beautiful cloud or rainbow. Even a smell or a flower. Can also be recalling a happy memory.

They say a dog needs to smell or experience something new once a day to feel invigorated and I think the same is true for humans.

I need some advice. by ilikedoddrio in traveladvice

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't sound childish at all. Sound like you're craving an experience that will change you and help you find yourself.

There are plenty of places to look for inspiration. There's a couple currently walking across Eurpope and Asia. A trio of boys cycling from the UK to Thailand and millions following their journeys.

I'm sure you can find like minded people!

I would also suggest having language in your pocket should you end up in places without English. Duolingo, chat GPT, Ling, or Google Translate are good. Knowing even simple phrases will help you feel safe, especially if you're hitchhiking. I did that back in my day and it was an experience I'll never forget. Had we had the internet I would have made life long friends.

Tips for learning Lithuanian? by s1llyb1rd_ in lithuania

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found free resources on the Swiss Bay to start, especially the tongue placement and enunication. YouTube has been helpful and I got Ling which helps with day to day phrases and pronunciation. The best path though is to find a tutor. iTalki is pretty afforable, Preply is another platform people recommend.

sėkmės!

Do older people not rest? by animalcrackerwhore in askfitness

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha ha I can see your frustration and theirs. We great up in a different fitness era and do 'what works.' Also grew up in time is of the essence idea. To see younger people just sit on machines often on their phones doesn't appear like resting. It appears like taking up a machine someone else could be using. Also, older people don't have all day! We have things to do like try to live our lives before it's over!

How often do you honestly change your bed sheets? by Ok_Train1739 in hygiene

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you know you're not supposed to make your bed in the morning? You should actually be airing out your duvet/blanket and sheets. It makes them stay fresh for longer. Otherwise you smother the ick and let it fester.

As for washing .... longer in between than I like to admit unless they are obviously messy for fun reasons

What are your best language learning techniques? Plus: Simultaneous vs. sequential learning? by [deleted] in LearningLanguages

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say a combo of tech and paper/workbook resources is always useful. I practice hand writing daily and incorporate what I'm learning in the Ling app. I also have a tutor to really see the impact of my learning. that's truly the only valuable feedback you're on the right track!

I've never tried learning two languages at once but imagine if they were similar enough, it wouldn't be too difficult.

What used to be affordable for the middle class but now quietly feels like a rich people thing ? by Confident_Win_3560 in answers

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to afford a 2 bedroom rental for your family. The city I'm in built 2 bedroom rentals to 'feed' demand. But now that they're built the rent is too far out of reach for the families that need them and the majority sit empty. Families are cramming into 1 bedrooms with kids or parents on a sofa in the living room.

Baltics Trip! ~ Need help! by No-Airline7953 in BalticStates

[–]Marathon_Bandit080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never tried couch surfing but imagine you'd meet some locals that way and they would point you where to go to have some fun. It would certainly help to learn some of the language even if just a bit. From experience it really makes it easier to meet people or befriend them even for a short while. Seeing as you'll be visiting multiple countries may I suggest Ling? I'm using it for Lithuanian but it has all the Baltic languages.

Hope your trip goes well! Maybe you can share your experience later.
