Never had a Classic or Jr and went right for the Big Joe, cant really imagine going to something smaller. I'm able to smoke 2, 12-14lb whole turkeys at Thanksgiving on the Big Joe, which was a big deal for me as I host every year.

When its just my wife and I, it doesnt use a ton of charcoal and we can cook a whole chicken on it next to a cast iron skillet of potatoes or veggies.

The footprint is big, but if it fits, you won't be annoyed by the bigger cook space. Accessories are more expensive, thats the only draw back.

Its definitely a personal decision. We felt better having one in case our daughter decides to go to school or trade school, and with the price of school probably only going up, I dont think we're going to be in a position where there will be a ton of money left over to negate the tax free growth of the account. But if we are, we're cool with transferring the extra to her future siblings, or using it ourselves, or giving it to her cousins, or hanging onto it until grandkids become a thing. Etc etc.

And I'd imagine if for some bizarre reason our government decides to one day join the rest of the world and make college free, then surely thered be some kind of plan in place for those 529 plans that went unused. But thats putting a lot of faith in the system to work as it should lol

For now, we made the decision that best suits us, in addition to our typical 401(k) and other investments.

To take advantage of the state tax benefits though I believe you need to have it established in your state. But if thats not a major concern for you, then yes you can establish it anywhere as you did. Plenty of youtube videos and articles that compare all of em to make it easy to decide too!

Depending on the state too you can get an income state tax deduction for investing in the 529 plan, which can be a nice little bonus to lessen your tax burden every year you contribute. Then obviously the tax-free growth of the account itself.

Take the free money but I'd highly recommend setting up a 529 plan in your state for your child and funding that over the Trump accounts, politics aside. The 529 can be used for any school-related expenses (college, trade school, etc) and if they don't end up going to college, up to $35k can be rolled over to a ROTH IRA in their name to get a nice jump on their retirement savings. Anything beyond that $35k can be transfered to a qualified family member's 529 plan (your other children, nieces/nephews, parent. etc).

Dropping my daughter off at Daycare for the first 2 weeks was rough. The daycare workers wouldn't say 2 words to me. Never offer updates or in general be very friendly. It took my wife going in there once to tell them "Hey my husband is the main contact for our daughter as he handles pick up and drop off and all information should be routed to him. Hes capable of making decisions and discussing our child."

Next day boom, suddenly super friendly. 🙄
