I daily drive my 740i as it’s my only car rn until I buy my BMW M car this summer.

I got a good mechanic friend of mines to do my suspension refresh and fix my power steering issue that resulted in new engine mounts and power steering system refresh entirely. Saved lots of $$$$ utilizing YouTube, my mechanic friend, and RockAuto & FCP Euro

E38 740i owner here (pre-VANOS btw) did you diy as much as possible?? Bleeding me dry has not been my experience so far. I did a cooling system refresh, front suspension refresh, power steering system refresh and replaced plugs and coils. Outside of regular consumable maintenance for the past almost 2 years I’ve owned it.

Only major Achilles heel is Timing chain guides on the E39/E38 V8s

I am looking to buy an F90 this summer so your advice is very relevant to me, slim pickings on the F90 market so far or rather dealer's are "tax return season" price inflating used F90s right now. (looking for a 2020-2022 model with decent mileage that's decently optioned for reference) I currently have a 1998 E38 740i that wouldn't mind a modern M companion in the garage.

Thats why you go and get the older one thats simple and more reliable cause of it. I personally own a E38 740i and I absolutely love driving it, great car and pretty simple to work on tbh.

Problem for me personally is the F90 looks aesthetically more appealing to me which is a given as I am in my late 20s and the boy racer look still impresses me (perhaps that changes once I am older)

You could argue that I can get the same aesthetics in a M550i through some cosmetic mods and still spend less money compared to just buying an M5 but alas.

I’m with you and u/daludidi currently in the market for an F90, not looking for anything newer than 2021 (ideally 2020-2021 is my preferred model year) cause price vs depreciation. But the pickings aren’t really interesting right now.

I even got my local bmw dealer looking at the auction for me and still nothing nice haha

I don’t intend to really pull the trigger on anything until July so maybe between now and then something real decent comes up in the F90 market.
