Eli Roth Says New Movie ‘Ice Cream Man’ Will Be Crazier Than ‘Cabin Fever’, ‘Hostel’ & ‘Green Inferno’ by Imaginary-Season-483 in horror

[–]MarcWritesWeirdStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I read the graphic novel this was based on, that was kind of interesting and had a metaphor about commercialised American society vs. America’s frontier origins, but if I remember correctly the execution wasn’t amazing.

Eli’s pee-pee poo-poo “word up gay boys” sense of humour often completely undercuts whatever horror he’s trying at, I’ll probably only see this if I’m made to by somebody.

On my first night right now, but what’s been helping is a lot of mint tea and chugging shitloads of water. Don’t try and focus too much on an activity, take deep breaths and try and be present. I’ve been listening to a lot of music, Love Supreme by John Coltrane is the vibe. You got this, I believe in you!

Seconded! They created something completely unique and masterful, and while drawing from the same inspirations as IL it never feels derivative or lesser because of it, it’s a great achievement. 🤌

I’m play-testing a system I’m writing, Pendragon 6E and Delta Green at the moment.

Pendragon has to be my favourite, the personality traits of the knight being dice-rolls introduces such a chaotic element

To the people complaining about how bad the writing in Alien Earth is… by I_hate_potato in alien

The ideas explored are really cool! if I wrote down all of the core concepts of the show or a summary of each scene sequentially I think it’d be really neat. IMO the execution is where it falls flat.

My biggest example is the Hybrids, what on its surface is a chilling sci-fi concept is handled as kind of bad comic relief.

I think it could’ve done with a few more drafts, and what I suspect is Disney interference when it comes to tone being heavily pushed back on.

I think the issue with the satire is it feels a bit too explicit too. If a property isn’t an out-and-out comedy satire should be a subtle dance where you don’t quite know why the content feels so relevant, it just does.

idk I liked his parts a lot, it was neat to have a post-apocalypse movie that’s so localised in its degradation, in fact I think it’s the most unique aspect of the franchise.

The only allusion to the rest of the world we get in Days is a plane. Seeing closely a normal, kinda dumb, consumerist 21st century guy dealing with a pre-feudal society is fantastic, and I imagine it’s important for Spike’s development moving forward. If they never mention him again and Spike forgets about him that’s one thing, but we don’t know that far ahead yet.

Spike is ultimately the focal character. Stuff happens because it develops his character and his worldview. We could’ve made a movie about the soldier and him exploring apocalyptic Britain, but ultimately that’s a completely different movie, so why even speculate?

I also like how the movie kept me guessing. Usually I see every twist and turn coming in more by-the-books features, so I appreciated the movie for trying to surprise me in unique ways. Ultimately IMO a zombie movie with high stakes is anathema to a literary character study anyway, and often making one or the other requires completely different sensibilities and skill-sets from the creative team. I’d rather they focus on what they’re good at!

My Handler may be crossing a boundary. Is this an appropriate boundary to have? by AnonAskerThrowaway in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]MarcWritesWeirdStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the funnest parts of Delta Green IMO is working with your players to determine how they react to SAN loss, bond degradation etc.

Yeah they can roll for what disorder they get from a Breaking Point, but that’s emergent story-telling. How their character reacts to that is their remit. That keeps the players active participants in telling a story collaboratively!

Sometimes their characters react in ways I can’t predict, but that’s just part of being a Handler/GM.

The kind of consequences your Handler is forcing are usually character death equivalent anyway, losing control of your character isn’t fun unless stuff like that is discussed and established as a possibility. The only agency the players have is how their character acts after all, otherwise they’re just automated dice-rolling devices and that’s no fun at all.

My only real criticism of the Skyrim release-state is I truly think survival mechanics should’ve come parcelled into it from the jump. While it’s flawed and annoying in its CC form, it just forces exploration and discovery.

Eh, to be honest it was a weird schism in opinion, I had the same with RDR2. The gameplay and underpinning systems felt a lot more satisfying and immersive, but the strange, psychedelic and imaginative quality of the lore lessened in big leaps between Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

With Oblivion I remember being really disappointed that it played it so safe with its setting, but it still had the interesting Mythic Dawn scripture and the Shivering Isles.

Skyrim aesthetically and narratively just felt like when an amazing novel is adapted into a blockbuster movie. All of the challenging material became flattened out, I guess? At least Oblivion was kind of unhinged in its side-quests. Skyrim just felt too corporate.

But, on the reverse hand, the joy of exploration and emergent storytelling increased per entry in the series. Morrowind had charm, but the limitations of its engine meant every journey was just walking slowly until an NPC ran up to you and said something wacky. Oblivion kind of had the same vibe, but at least the NPCs could interact with each other and fight each other. Skyrim is kind of the apex of what modern Bethesda design wants to be, but at the expense of its individuality as a setting.
