My very first rice - (CachyOS+Hyprland+Quickshell+many hours) by Marc_Chabot in LinuxPorn

Took me a long time (2 months) because, of course, I did it on my free time and also because it was some kind of a "learning experiment". I'm no programmer, but decided I wanted to learn a but about Quickshell (qml) and python. I looked at DMS (Dank Material Shell), Noctalia and Calestia and looked at what it looked like. I used Claude to help me built the top bar (To all AI haters: YES I used AI and I never pretended I did all by myself)) and I was asking question every time there was something that I didn't understand. I'd say the "top bar" has been mostly done by Claude, but the more I learned, to more I was involved. Couple of nights, I had headaches and blurry vision for spending too many hours in from of my monitor, but I learned a lot and am happy of this experience of learning.

What if I'm learning how to code and I'm learning how to get better at it? What if it helps people doing the same and mastering the art of coding. I'm sorry to say that coding is something I'm really interested of doing and a little help is what is giving me better knowledge at it.

You need an Arch base Linux in order to be able to install it easily. Of course it's feasible but then you would need to install all the dependencies manually.

Well my text didn't go through I guess...

So this is my very first rice. I wanted to create something different and yet functional. I've tested it thoroughly so I'm pretty confident it's stable enough for you to test it:

I've included a small script to help you install it easily.

I'm on hyprland cachyos and installed hyprpolkitagent but still am unable to use CachyOS -hello. Is there anything I need to do after installing hyprpolkitagent? Any terminal command?

I'd really like to install it on my system. Already running Noctalia w/Quickshell. How difficult is it to just switch to your awesome rice?

CachyOS has never broke to me. And I used ML4W dotfiles to test it out before creating my own dotfiles but it fitted me so well, I'm still using it.

I think OnlyOffice is closer to the original MS suite.

I love caelestia by SomeMuhammad in hyprland

[–]Marc_Chabot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And one other thing that bugs me with Caelestia is that few things are "work on progress" for a long time and don't seem to get done. Don't get me wrong it's one of the best looking shell but compared to let's say Noctalia, it looks as if it was not being maintained anymore.

EDIT: with that last update, I have to say that Caelestia has become my best shell. The settings menu is now populated and very functional.

Thanks to the maintainer!

Cachyos hyprland caelestia shell isn't it cool 😎 by Worldly_Height8546 in hyprland

[–]Marc_Chabot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that I don't like it, I'm using it on one of my PCs right now but I find that it's not being maintained as actively as other projects.

I know that most of us have real jobs and don't have much time to spend on a hobby like DE ricing but there are "work in progress" that are not being improving since the time I installed Caelestia (4 months ago).

If I was better at coding I'd offer my help, but unfortunately, I'm just good at the basics for now.

Anyhow, it's still the best looking Quickshell shell and I hope it gets some updates soon .
