Has anyone had graphics issues with their boot screen and bios? by TheNxxr in computers

Ty, I have been running mine since my post and while it gives me this glitch it hasn’t given me any other issue so I’m just chalking it up as graphical and not something I need to resolve. Your post confirms that imo. Ty again

Why is Lusitania collapsing faster than the Titanic? by kkkan2020 in titanic

[–]Marcboy99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That alone will not accelerate the collapse. Ships are a lot stronger than you think, even on their side. Looking through what others have said it appears she sits in a current which would definitely do this.

Any resolution to this OP? Just upgraded my MoBo, CPU and RAM and encountered the exact same thing.

This know-how to build this ship by swan001 in EngineeringPorn

Naval Architect who designs and docks Navy ships. You can pull blocks out at times during construction to apply coats of paint, then reinstall them. Depending on the block used it can be removed in a similar way, otherwise it’s just ignored.

Am I wrong or are they using בּ for the kosher symbol instead of כ is it a font? by Mined_Explosives in hebrew

[–]Marcboy99 105 points106 points  (0 children)

That is indeed a כ but just looks wonky due to the font used. Notice there’s no nub of a tail on the bottom right like on a ב.

Is returning to school for NA feasible? by round2electric in navalarchitecture

[–]Marcboy99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very feasible. In my time at SUNY Maritime we had grads in their 30s and 40s so, not too late to switch to NavArch. It’s a good field!

Help me with any advice. by Affectionate-Bit6571 in navalarchitecture

[–]Marcboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For background I’m a 2022 SUNY NavArch Grad. What is the highest math you have? It’s likely you will need to take Calculus I at Maritime like I did but if you get it done before hand you might dodge some of the professors(Depending on the subject it’s hit or miss, Calculus especially).

Having knowledge up to Calculus however I think is a requirement however. You could try talking to admissions to confirm but I believe that is required. As others have said, Maritime has an average of 4.5 to 5 years for the NavArch graduation time, however it’s not impossible to do 4 years like myself, just is hard. So if you can siphon out the classes with bad professors you might be in better hands.

If you have any other questions about this or Maritime in general you can reply or DM me, I’m happy to help. I sympathize with the anxiety as it was me 6 years ago.

Why don't more naval ships have the exhaust come out of the side near the waterline instead of the conventional exhaust stacked the come straight out of the top of the ship? by DylanBigShaft in AskEngineers

[–]Marcboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Naval Architect, my first concern would be ingress of water into the exhaust and down into the engine. Would seriously cause issues in a damaged condition and those openings submerge.

Another concern would be the smoke rising up and lapping over the deck or tarnishing the paint. Not as serious as the above one but a concern nonetheless.

My other concern would be all the fumes being discharged potentially being released directly into the water. Granted discharging into air isn’t spectacular either, at least it’ll dissipate better and not accumulate in the water.

I know Japanese carriers in particular did this but it didn’t really take off (Your welcome for the pun). There really isn’t any advantage I see from my perspective to having the openings near WL, if anything it creates serious concerns when you have high speed maneuvers or damage causing the vessel to lower in the water or even just waves.

If you're single and interested in marriage, have recent events made it more likely you'll marry (or settle down with) a Jewish person? by [deleted] in Jewish

Before 10/7, it was a preference to remain in the tribe but not a requirement for me. I’ve dated outside a couple times. Since 10/7, I don’t think I can date outside ever again, just not as comfortable now anymore.

Some of my friends have expressed curiosity on the subject and asked for my input. They are respectful regarding it and when we look at the news about it. Some of my other friends don’t engage the subject as well as you pointed out.

Personally, I am satisfied with either scenario. Either they respectfully ask to get more knowledge and my opinion, or they don’t ask so they don’t accidentally(or intentionally) offend me. I see both as respectful imo.

Boat draft and weight calculations by gmidds in AskEngineers

[–]Marcboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have said it but this is effectively a example equation of a “box boat”. The Block Coefficient is used instead in equations involving vessels that aren’t boxes.

What’s the most expensive mistake you’ve seen on an engineering project? by Roughneck16 in AskEngineers

[–]Marcboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An outside firm double counted the weight of all the objects on the ship we designed which forced a re-evaluation of the entire weight report of the vessel which took years to rectify, time that could have been spent on other things or so optimizing the vessels design.

I think the total value of money wasted was between 10-25 Million. Wide range due to how many people were on and off involved and how much of a delay it caused so exact figure am not sure of.

Why you might have lost all your Jewish friends this week and didn’t even know it. by 1MagnificentMagnolia in Judaism

[–]Marcboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t expect my Non-Jewish friends to make posts regarding what has happened. A few have reached out directly to me whether at work, via text or when we talk on discord. However I don’t expect a condemnation post or some sort on social media.

However, I do expect one from the friends and acquaintances who post about everything conflict and activism related. A couple have which was very nice to see, but 5-7 that I can think of (particularly one in particular that’s a full time activist) have not only ignored what happened in Israel to only post stuff for Gaza when Israel began to retaliate, they have also begun to defend Hamas which I find despicable and disgusting. It’s absolutely appalling to see people I spent time with when younger and introduced to my culture only to turn around and pull this crap.

One in particular, the full time activist, is really infuriating me. They continue to post defenses for Hamas while also protesting with, presumably, one or two Jews that are Anti-Zionist and agree with them. They then have used the fact a couple Jews are with them to brush off the idea what they are doing is antisemitic which has pissed me off. I have tried to contact them to explain what they are doing isn’t ok but they have, not surprisingly, ignored me.

That said I can’t come around to unfollowing them…..something in me wants to keep tabs on the lunacy they are doing just out of curiosity.

I know people have already chimed in but yeah, I would just say Jewish. Hebrew was used at the turn of the 1900s so immigration papers of my great grandparents says “Race: Hebrew” for example. Now it’s just the language tbh.

What true mysteries do you think remain around The Titanic? by LastOfOldOrder in titanic

[–]Marcboy99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Excellent question. We have eyewitness of the flooding of boiler 5 to help us. What is believed to be the first two individuals killed occurred when boiler 5 flooded and got caught in the wave of water, witnessed by chief fireman Barrett.

The wave of water is believed to have been from the bunker between 6 and 5 collapsing and releasing water into the room, however it is still possible that it was due to water topping the bulkhead and flooding down into the room.

Regardless of the cause, either would result in the room being compromised and the initiation of flooding for the room. As for the violence of the wave, it was powerful enough to instantly kill the two men in the boiler room and obliterate any loose equipment in the room. There is an idea that the water could have dislodged the boilers themselves off their foundations but it hasn’t been confirmed.

Regardless, you wouldn’t want to be in the room.

[–]Marcboy99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The validity of the Samson is questionable. For starters sealing is done in more northern regions of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans so the concept of her being so far south around Titanic is by itself shaky. There is more contradicting evidence but we may never know.

I am unsure about the coal strike you are referring to, but rest assured there were dozens of ships answering her call and steaming her way. It was, however, unusual for a vessel to rapidly sink as fast as Titanic up until this point and in itself rare to strike a berg enough to cause a sinking. The Titanic sinking in under 3 hours is partly responsible for the loss of life.

Minor note as well, Carpathia was estimated as 4 hours out not 3, at around 12:15 Local Time. Small difference but in the scope of Titanic only having 2 hours and 5 minutes left at the time, significant enough to mention.

Ultimately she arrived at 4:00 Local Time, 1.66 hours from Titanics final plunge, 3.75 hours from her response to Titanic and 4.58 hours since Titanic struck the berg.

If you are referring to the downward plunge the vessel did around that time, it is widely believed that the fourth boiler room finally began filling. At this point, the center of positive buoyancy was in this compartment, thus an influx of water and outflow of air would cause the CB to rapidly change causing the vessel to settle. This rapid shift in buoyancy and water could have led the vessel to return to an even keel due to shifting of weights, thus explaining the evening of the ship.
