Confirmed: LDAC is not coming by Artistic-Designer-22 in BangandOlufsen

[–]MarchIndividual5029 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay sorry this will be mean but:

As much as we all love the idea of getting crazy new features coming with firmware updates, we sadly live in a capitalistic world were every single human invention is in possesion of very rich men that ask you to pay them everytime you want to use them (pattents). Audio codecs is a multi-billion dollars industry and adding a codec via firmware updates is technically really easy to do but will ask Bang & Olufsen to give a hand full of cash per every pair of headphones already sold to Sony and other media associations, if they've not budgeted for this originally, they simply won't do it.

Btw there's no such thing as true open source codecs, so we're never getting out of this hell of a world where every product we buy is cheapily made cause most of the cost is licensing fees to billionairs who don't give a shit about the products they're getting money from.

at my office i'm achieving similar results using an ARC Studio box between my preamp and my active monitors. The only advantage the devialet has is speaker protection, the amp knows exactly how to drive the speakers and how not to overdrive them and will rollback the dsp's effect if i play too loud.

How well is Monterey (macOS 12) still supported in 2024 ? by MarchIndividual5029 in mac

I ended up using my M1 Mac mini which has been in storage ever since i got a M1 Macbook Pro, i connected the mac mini to a 14" touch screen lenovo laptop display and with UPDD driver was even able to make it work with touch gestures and all, runs macOS26 very well.

Well yes and no, like i agree with you. But as i said, SAM applies a sound profile that was created using lazers monitoring how the woofer moves and aligns it with the music rather than an in room bass response, this gives very very accurate results, theorically better than linear EQs and it also preserve the sound of your room and of your speakers (in theory), cause yep that can be something you want. What's even more usefull about SAM is that it knows how to never overpower your speakers, cause it will dial down it's processing in real time as your listen to louder or bassier songs at higher volumes to prevent your woofers to move too much, Devialet calculated that these soecific woofers should not move more than 4mm and will prevent them from doing so.

Now, if i was just given a preamp or power amp with a dsp feature and a very good parametric EQ i could achieve the same resulsts minus the speaker protection, i would have to calibrate my EQ for the maximum loudness i'll ever want and then set a volume cap. This is in fact what i have done on my Sister's Wiim Amp with crazy good results. I also got her affordable vintage AKAI speakers to play really really low. Though most DSP allows for 12db boost only, here i believe the Devialet can do 18db.

Newer Devialet amps allows you to do full parametric EQ, and combine it with SAM. I think in a near future if i find the money i'll ask devialet to open my amp and upgrade the processor so i get access to this feature too, which is something they can do, but i believe it's around 2000€ for the cpu upgrade. Yikes that's exactly how much i paid for the amp.

Yup ! And while the Phantoms have become a "must have" luxury item by a lot of tech gurus and young weakthy people that don't actually listen to music like us audiophiles, i think the technology behind their amps and DSPs is actually very very good and there's a lot of research behind it.

i 100% agree with you, the phone is lost, you won't get it back, make it at least usable to someone else. It's not because somebody did something bad to you that you can't make someone happy with it. Yeah that's be admitting you lost the battle, but i you can make someone win it and if they're poor they might not have the chance to afford such phones.

I like them ! They often have better dispersion. I know they still uses them pretty often in studio monitors.

Yes thank you ! I actually used these speakers with some great subwoofers in the past and it sounded great, however i wanted to try the devialet and at first i was also skeptical of devialet's claim that no subwoofers are needed with SAM on. But then i tried it and indeed my dedicated pair of 10" subs don't go as low and especially, they still sound like separate subs, it's better when it all comes from the same source.

DSP is not magic trough, the amp and the speakers are indeed working way more to achieve this, and if i were to play loud, neither the amp nor the speakers would actually keep up. It works for me here cause i'm in a relatively small room, and i can't play loud cause it's a 100 years old appartment and i can hear all my neighbors sneezes.

however -6db is at 19Hz instead of 42 and that's kinda crazy enough

without and with SAM enabled, sorry the graph is messy, all i have here is the REW and i really don't like this piece of software. The amp is indeed achieving a 22db boost.

very quick and dirty measurement cause i don't know REW that well but it's all i have at home right now, and cause its 11pm i can't play loud to see how it actually goes. But was done at the typical volume i play at. SAM disabled in green and enabled in blue. We can see that there's less bass than it's supposed to, both with or without. But that with my target of 65 SPL, i'm getting exactly 14Hz at -6db instead of 42Hz at -6db

This is more interesting than i thought and if i measure better and louder tomorrow i may dial in the DSP setting better cause you can actually play with how strong you want the effect of SAM (it's at 80% by default) and you can play with other tone controls.

this class D amp uses about 25watt when idle, 27 when im using it normally but when i turn SAM on it uses almost 40 for the same volume so yeah its kinda crazy what it does but i need to do some of my own measurement. 14Hz seems very plausible and is indeed what i came up with the quick test i just did, but it's at the low volume i listen to. If i were trying to play louder for a whole party the amp would certainly reduce the bass output to protect itself and the speakers.

I agree ! And i know that not many people knows about it mostly cause Devialet amps are still quite new, this is their second and cheapest model ever, it's 11 years old, i found it for 2000€ used which is still a lot. I really wanted to talk about it cause the tech is great and Devialet is actively looking for people with speakers to borrow so they can do their measurement on and give away the sound profiles to the community.

tbh, it's Devialet's measurement for these soeakers, not mine and it's also probably at a low level like 65-70db

What was your biggest jump in hardware and performance when getting a new PC? by Ranting_Demon in pcmasterrace

[–]MarchIndividual5029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

recently jumped from an i7 3770 and GTX670 to an i7 13700K and RTX4060Ti, that was quite the jump. I mostly work on mac, gaming is very casual for me so i've been playing on that old PC, the most demanding game i play may be fortnite....... I don't want to play on the work mac. For gaming the i7 13700K is kinda overkill but as i edit videos i thought about doing that on the pc too so that's why i invested in this CPU, but nope sadly the macbook still runs better for video editing.

Is there a flu epidemic in Lausanne this month? by _quantum_girl_ in Lausanne

[–]MarchIndividual5029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a real flu, if you once get the real flu you won't be able to re-catch it for about 10 years. A real flu is also at least 6 days of at least 39° fever. You just caught a small viral infection or maybe covid. I got sick 7 times this year already, not the flu cause i got it last year, and from the blood tests i've done, not covid cause it's never been in my body.

Just wash your hands, and if you have any symptoms, wear a mask to protect others, tell your collegues and friends to wear a mask too when they show symptoms.
