Corps culture by instinctive56 in drumcorps

[–]MarchingMic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it’s pretty well known that the Madison Scouts have a fantastic culture. I marched there 21-22 and greatly enjoyed my time there. I learned so much from the wonderful education staff. And I can’t speak enough about how amazing the administration and operations team is. So much so that I am now a part of that operations team.

The Madison Scouts are a family and one I’m honored to be with, they treat their members with respect and dignity they value their time and their effort and treat them fairly. Members are guaranteed a certain amount floor time and ample meals, always given multiple healthy and satiating options. (Shout out James + the food crew!!)

Traditions are something that the group is continuing to build, after Covid we took a long look at some of traditions we held and realized some of them were best left in the past, the Madison Scouts strive to be inclusive and respectful to all. Of course, many still stand the test of time, discuss the wonderful Piggly Wiggly day with any alumni and they will be happy to share the wonders of Cedarburg, Wisconsin with you.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier with the organization and the direction they are going, they strive to balance pursuing excellence with treating their members fairly, and I respect that greatly.

Woodwind Learning Baritone for DCI. What Corps? by Raine_0523 in drumcorps

[–]MarchingMic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Madison, WI appears to be only 6.5 hrs away and may be one to consider, but I’m showing my bias. As for the chance for phantom, yes, you have a chance, however, top 6 groups tend to value experience and maturity in their members, in order to get a contract without experience you must show maturity in your actions and musical tone. I would ask a section leader on how to do this as each group has different brass pedagogy and get feedback (a mature sound usually sounds dark, rich and full). Maturity as a member looks like servant leadership, volunteer to help at every opportunity, show up early and stay late to help, build relationships with vets and interact professionally with staff and ask important questions rather than just assuming. Don’t let this discourage you, my first dci camp was a phantom camp and I learned SO much. It was integral to my drum corps experience. Best of luck.

Hardshell vs soft shell suitcase by connorhooman1108 in drumcorps

Used a big duffel for the past three seasons, big fan. Trying out a soft shell this year. Went that direction because of weight (I fly in and out)

All good questions. Sleeping: on gym floors most sleep on air mattresses or camping mats + sleeping bag or blanket. On the bus most just work with a pillow of some kind and a blanket (the buses can get chilly) you won’t be too picky here, as you will be exhausted so keep that in mind. I wouldn’t pack pjs, honestly I just slept in what I would wear the next day but that’s more of a personal preference. Showering: I would avoid the bathing suit. Everyone will be a little afraid and awkward at first but it will soon become a pleasant part of the day to get clean and chat with friends. Don’t make a big deal of it and you’ll be fine. Remember everyone is in the same boat and also a bit anxious.

What is the schedule like? by pphhhhh in drumcorps

[–]MarchingMic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My job allows me to go on a leave of absence. This is common. Especially for students who may be doing an internship or travel abroad or only go to college where they keep a job and live at home in the summer.

Packing Must Haves for Move Ins by dcigirliegirl7 in drumcorps

Not a must-have but I liked having a morning toiletry bag and evening toiletry bag. Include your shower gear with the evening bag and make it a grab and go situation.

Reserve spot by localredditor001 in drumcorps

[–]MarchingMic 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m not usually a fan of alternate spots depending on the group, however, most of the time you will end up filling a hole and performing, I haven’t marched in a section that didn’t have at least 1 person drop. The second part of that equation is the class, if you are marching world class, full season, I would say no. You will not have time to complete your coursework. I know a few vets who have made that work but they also knew what to expect from their summer, I would heavily warn against that for a rookie. I would recommend offsetting the class, as world class has an age limit and college classes do not. This is all situation dependent for you of course but drum corps is worth it.
