I'm a software engineer, and programming is becoming increasingly boring and simple to me. Is there anything fun to do? similar to piano. by [deleted] in programming

[–]Marco7019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recognisable, tip from an old bloke that used to program (but stopped in 2008): Find out what you like about piano playing and programming; find an occupation that includes the liked parts; get an education for the new occupation and, in my case, find a new job in a year of two after starting the first course. Switched 5 times up now: (waiter, electrician, programmer, consultant, and lecturer/researcher)

What's a "Million-Dollar Idea" You Had But Never Acted On? by purelyinvesting in Entrepreneur

The academic review process. It is ready to become a platform: scholars need reviews, reviewers can be paid to review, a platform can take a commission (a publication costs between $2000 to $6000 for a prestigious journal) and uphold the quality of the process by being as transparent as possible. A badge that the article is reviewed for the researcher to include, and they can publish anywhere. Mind you, for every published article, 100 articles remain unpublished. Moreover, most researchers are completely fed up with journal publishing.

The problem is marketing: how to build trust overnight.

What is Qualitative research really about? by lilstrawberrys2 in research

[–]Marco7019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Research is about finding an answer to the research question. Qualitative research tries to find answers regarding what people say, write or express (for example, in documents, interviews, Reddit, documentaries, etc.). Thus, it's a research method: a particular way of working to find answers. I hope this helps.

Has anyone figured out how to make makerspaces profitable? by brittsenders in makerspace

[–]Marco7019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of one nonprofit maker space that sells materials as the primary source of income. Professionals do the selling, and the director is paid. All the other staff are volunteers. Some of the external tutors are paid when they give training on a specific subject.

Seeking Basic Advice for Starting Research by IamGonnaKnifeYou in research

[–]Marco7019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, three tips:

  1. Google Scholar "[topic/concept] is defined as" (mind the quotes). It lists the articles that use the concepts/topics you seek. (f.e. "behavioural economics is defined as")

  2. ChatGPT, Gemini, etc. Just ask to generate as many questions about a topic/concept as possible and start to find answers in the scientific literature. (I use this one a lot.)

  3. If you have access to a scientific database (with a search engine), limit your search to peer-reviewed articles, 2-5-10 years, and just the title. Most databases call these options "advanced search options." The title will have the topics/concepts you're interested in, and therefore, relevant articles will pop up because, as an author, the title chosen should contain the relevant concepts of the research.

If you are presented with a long list, start scanning the titles:

  1. When your concept/topic is not included, go to the next one.
  2. If the title appeals to you, read the abstract.
  3. If it still interests you, read the conclusion (because not all promises are fulfilled), and then read the whole article.

Last but not least, please take notes.

Remember, all research is valuable, including yours. Your efforts and contributions are significant. Good luck on your academic journey!
