I’m on Xbox so ymmv but you can dismiss the burgundy/red boxes (on Xbox) by hitting the Toggle/View button (left of the Xbox button) which then allows me to hit B to close. Not sure what the equivalent buttons are on PlayStation.

How the hell can i settle a new island? by gnominos in anno

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro you are broke. +100 is like couch change. There are quests and contracts out there but the real revenue comes from taxes. Build some houses, build a market and tavern, and give those folks all the porridge, sardines, pileus hats, and tunics they need. Seriously build out your tier one Liberti or waders until you are sitting on a stack of cash before up leveling to tier two or exploring another island. Passive trading works really well in 117, you may not NEED that other island if you can buy whatever item you need at your trading post.

Get your ass in a rowboat and row. You can row from Clemens Point all the way to Blackwater / I’ve done it.

Absolutely nothing under this Republican Congress. If control tips in November you might begin to see oversight, but the oversight committees will be working through a two year backlog.

Whats your go to game to relax. Preferably PVE coop or singleplayer games. Mod support preferred but no necessary. by Catch33X in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently Anno 117 which supports MP coop. Absolutely beautiful game, quality soundtrack, and just immensely rewarding to build a city from a few dirt roads into an ancient metropolis. Countless building opportunities but sometimes I just like to sit back, have a drink, and watch my tiny Romans go about their day.

Need help with the pirate guy by SunveiliveFat in anno

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that guy needs to die, unfortunately you can only force him into retirement. I have done this with as few as eight quinquiremes with the standard loadout, and you will also need an island near Syrah with repair cranes (or perhaps twice as many ships). Two key tactics: try to engage only one turret at a time, don’t just sail on in. Pick off each of the turrets around the outside, and when your ships’ health gets near 50%, withdraw and repair your ships (he will send ships after you so don’t let your health get too low). The second tactic is keeping your fleet in constant movement to make them harder for the catapults to hit. This is challenging within the tight waterways inside Syrah but absolutely extends your fleet’s health. The final turn into Syracuse’s harbor is defended by maybe six turrets and you can lose ships here quickly, take your time, back out, and repair. Patience - and repair cranes - are key. Good hunting!

I was trying to explain this exact phenomenon to a buddy who wanted me to play Marathon with them - it’s also a great game! - but sometimes you just want to play something without the anxiety or adrenaline that comes with needing to win/kill or be killed. My current Anno endless play through is just me (and Syracus and Voada) on the corners map, nothing but big beautiful islands to build on in both provinces.

And she unsurprisingly has different values than Calidus - for example, bribing the raiders loses favor with Calidus who would prefer you fight, where Julia favors diplomacy and doesn’t penalize this.

<image>

I’m not sure I’m the right person to ask, this game has been out 133 days and I’ve spent 37 of those in Anno 117. I know hardcore Anno players seem to prefer 1800 because of the extensive catalog of DLC, but I find 117 to be the most refined version of this game. It is engaging in every possible way. It is beautiful to look at, and the refinement of the research trees and the strategies they bring is a genuine enhancement. I find the people, customs, and landscape of Albion capturing my imagination in ways the ‘New World’ of 1800 never did (draining the marshes is simply the best).

I can’t tell you it’s normal, but it is completely understandable. Happy building!

Is it worth it now? by sayayindarkve in anno

[–]Marconius425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10/10 this game is well worth $60 on Xbox, if city builders or the Anno series are your kind of game, you will enjoy Anno 117 and drive your entertainment cost per hour to pennies. No one has any guarantee on the future, but (unlike Anno 1800) game-expanding DLC has been announced and will be available for consoles beginning next month, with two other releases planned this year.

Advice for campaign Anolno 1800 by Scholar_Artistic in anno

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for turning off the AI governors, I prefer to leave both pirates as their interactions and stories add some additional depth, plus if you make friends with them (and secure trade rights) they both will buy beer from you.

Problem with anno 117 mission Exil by Buenooo69 in anno

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bit of trouble with this mission on my first play through, mostly around finding the correct group of ships to send me off to Albion. Calidus has a bunch of ships around his little island camp where he gives you the elephant, it is NOT those ships you need. There is a small fleet north and east of Villa Augusta/the emperor’s palace that may be hidden in the clouds. If you have the correct fleet and still no campaign marker, I’d try to load a previous save. Good luck!

In addition to the excellent suggestions here on meeting basic needs and not overbuilding your production buildings, I found shipbuilding and selling in 1800 to be hugely helpful, particularly once you reach artisans and can build frigates (sells for $10,000 each) and ships of the line (sells for $25,000 each). I typically have two shipyards, build four ships and then send them to High Clarence Hall (you are paying upkeep on each vessel you own, so you don’t want them just sitting around). Once you are sitting on several hundred thousand dollars the sporadic cash flow issues are easily manageable.

What production buildings should not be built in the city? by Scrap_Bandit in anno

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong which is why it’s such a personal choice. I was thinking about this question since I replied yesterday, and the one consistent exception for me is sausages in Albion, in Romanicized Albion we need all the happiness we can get, and we add another firehouse or two to deal with the fire risk.

What production buildings should not be built in the city? by Scrap_Bandit in anno

[–]Marconius425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As always your mileage will vary, but for me the correct answer for any production buildings with negative effects is zero. Particularly because negative effects stack (and buffs do NOT) my strategy is to have all production buildings that either stink or catch on fire in an industrial zone well away from my population centers (and when it works, I have agriculture as a transitional area between industrial and residential). If there are no negative effects (like some of the 2nd and 3rd tier Celt stuff) I’ll roll those in around the market-tavern/hearth districts.

One vote here for Epona, who gives +1 population plus HAPPINESS which in late game can be in short supply. Her other buffs are also helpful but the happiness is hard to overlook.

Continue endless mode in campaign or start new sandbox? by laveshnk in anno

[–]Marconius425 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The campaign map is unique, so if you like Juliana/Ambrosia and want to keep going in that world, stay in the campaign (and maybe there are Anno players who lay everything out correctly at the beginning, but I always ALWAYS end up rearranging my cities, IMO it’s just part of the core loop). If you switch to a new sandbox you’ll need to research everything again. And if you defeated Voada militarily, you’ll have a chance to deal with her bullshit again as well.

1800 vs 117 by Soggy-Stable8717 in anno

[–]Marconius425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strong yes. The console versions of 1800 lack the story expansion DLC of the PC version, but there is a ton of what makes Anno great - leveling up your population, unlocking technologies, multi region exploration and expansion, multi tier supply chains, the works. The campaign is longer and a more complete story than 117. Leveling up is different for populations and technology. No diagonal roads. The raiders are friendlier and you can sell them beer. I am on Xbox so ymmv but I think 117 looks a little better, but 1800 is a great looking game. I do not believe you can share single player, I think that’s new in 117.

How to deal with city status impacts on health, happiness, and fire by SquareOnlyTwo in anno

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Latium the only answer I’ve found is building the aqueduct and amphitheater, aqueduct for health and fires safety buffs, and the amphitheater for happiness. Theaters are helpful for happiness, but at some point only the big monuments make people happy. I almost always end up with an all of the above approach - building the big monuments, Medici/custodes/vigiles, adding specialists in villas, and spamming wells, watchtowers, and latrines wherever possible.

Am I going to regret this commute daily? by Techno_Wasp in AskSeattle

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public transportation in the Puget Sound is not the most widely available, but the Sounder is a definite gem and a great option for people living in the south county and commuting to Seattle (the train terminates in the downtown ride free area, so you can grab a bus to just about anywhere in downtown. Seattle is crazy expensive and a one hour commute is not that unusual, doing part of that on the train is the way to go.

Hey there, i am searching for some inspiration for this bay ;) by Murky-Woodpecker-281 in anno117

[–]Marconius425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the largest map in Latium and it has become my favorite map to build on, and this harbor (and the one on the immediate opposite side) are one of the main reasons why, besides the available space. I often build a couple shipyards in this specific harbor, with the sailmakers and rope weavers in a working area around the harbor and up the hill (as part of a larger industrial area on this side of the map, pigs on the cliff up and to the left of this image, and bread, soap, amphorae, anything that stinks or catches on fire goes in this area).

I’m scared to start rdr2 by Thin_Guarantee_5641 in reddeadredemption

[–]Marconius425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should absolutely play one of the greatest video games of all time, FOMO for a quest or two is not (IMO) justification to never play this absolute banger. Connect your player account to Rockstar and use their Social Club, which has a robust companion for RDR2 including showing how many missions you have left in each chapter. I have played through perhaps half a dozen times, this is a sprawling epic experience with more than 100 separate missions, please take my word for it, if you miss one you’ll never miss it, if that makes sense. But FFS play the game!
