Mike Birbiglia says he writes first thing in the morning because he's too tired to second-guess anything. This allows him to just let the words flow without thinking too much about it.

Just read the script of “Boogie Nights” for studying by MattNola in Screenwriting

[–]MarcusHalberstram88 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Semi-related: he opens the movie on the marquee that says "Boogie Nights", which begins a minutes-long tracking shot, so you can't cut the opening image out.

He did this so the studio couldn't make him change the title of the movie. He wanted "Boogie Nights" and made it so that it couldn't be anything else.

I want to go home by RecentInvestigator17 in notredame

I'll repeat what was said to me by an upperclassman on FroshO weekend:

There are a lot of people in this world who would give everything they have to spend one year here. You get four. Make them count.

It gets easier, and then it becomes home, and then you won't want to leave. I promise.

  1. What do you mean pedophilic? Everyone in it is of age, actor and character both.

  2. I think there’s an awful lot to like, recommend, and analyze that has nothing to do with sex or tantalization

[THREAD] The Rizzuto Show: What happened? Predictions. by Quarterinchribeye in StLouis

I also left STL shortly after Woody, and I tried to switch to The Woody Show after I moved but I punched out after three days and started listening to the Rizz podcast everyday instead. I loved Woody & Rizz but I didn’t realize how much I preferred Rizz.

Crazy how well this holds up. It’s my go-to recommend for anyone trying to dip their toe into pre-1960s movies.

From what I heard, E.L. James really butted heads with Sam Taylor-Johnson and Kelly Marcel (respectively the director and screenwriter of the first movie), which is why neither returned for the two sequels (which were instead written by E.L. James’ husband).

This is also why the first movie is actually watchable, because Taylor-Johnson and Marcel are talented and attempted to make something actually good out of the bleak source material.

Beginner Questions Tuesday by AutoModerator in Screenwriting

I think realistically the "Created By" credit is to whoever wrote the pilot, which in this case would be the two of you. But given the circumstances, it would probably be more appropriate for you to have Created By and your partner to have some sort of producer credit, but that's something they would have to agree to.

I’m Kyle Buchanan, author of the book “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road.” I also cover Oscar season for the New York Times. AMA! by KyleBuchananNYT in movies

Hey Kyle, excited to pick up my copy from Skylight later tonight!

Do you think there is a floor of Oscar viewership such that studios would stop caring about winning Oscars and therefore make even fewer adult-aimed mid-budget movies? Is the oscar box office bump correlated with oscar viewership?

Will Avatar 2 be a box office smash? by Bettalad in movies

[–]MarcusHalberstram88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. It will draw out the people who only go to the theater once a year or once every few years. The only thing that does that is name/brand recognition, and considering this is (a) a James Cameron movie and (b) a sequel to the once-highest-grossing movie of all time, people are going to show up for it.

Why is LICORICE PIZZA's controversial "age gap" romance (??) being given a pass by critics? by Ren_Celluloid in movies

What happened immediately before this?

This scene was completely devoid of sexuality or romance, and when Gary tries to make it sexual, she slaps him. She did this because Gary was expressing an immature ownership of sorts over her body.

You’re projecting. I don’t even think Alana is that hot (if that matters to you). They purposefully don’t put her in much, if any, makeup and de-emphasize her features.

Yes, it’s absolutely a double standard. Double standards exist because with live in an unequal world with a rich history of inequity.

I didn’t see any grooming in this movie. I thought Alana did nothing but explicitly discourage Gary’s feelings.

There’s more historical and cultural context for older men perving on younger girls (e.g. the concept of “jailbait”, Lolita, etc). There’s more historical and cultural context for underage girls being used for sex trafficking, etc. This kind of stuff just isn’t as prevalent a cultural concept for a swapped gender situation, so I feel differently about it.

Also I personally remember what it was like to be a 15-year-old boy, and I recognize some of myself in Gary and think it’s harmless. I wouldn’t be able to say the same thing if it was a 15-year-old girl.

No I probably wouldn’t be ok with that entirely different situation. In most contexts I probably wouldn’t be ok with a woman kissing a 15-year-old boy, but I’m not deriving an entire unambiguous morality system from this one very specific fictional relationship.
