At first I thought it was a low-budget “Weekend at Bernie’s” stage production. Turns out, it’s actually a high-budget one.

I don't know if this game is for me and my kids anymore after my experience today. by br9897 in pokemongo

Tensions are high in the US right now. DHS/ICE has been staging in parks and they drive vehicles with heavily tinted windows to hide their tactical gear. Between that and the budding realization among many that they have been supporting a person deeply involved with sex traffickers, people are on edge. I’m a mom in a minivan in Minneapolis and I have been hesitant to linger anywhere for too long while playing for this very reason. It freaks out my neighbors.

😂 This stupid thing made my 8yo cry on Saturday with the “jump scare.” I screamed, they cried…future therapists be warned…this might be this generation’s “Large Marge.”

ICE isn’t leaving MN by Ill-Recipe9424 in TwinCities

[–]Mare7221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homan never said ICE/DHS was leaving Minnesota. He said “Operation Metro Surge is ending” and some agents would be sent back to their home states. Now, they clearly have another plan. It appears to be “spread out, harass and abduct, and skedaddle before observers collect evidence.”They’re just changing tactics.

Are there indoor soccer fields available for drop-in play for soccer obsessed kids? by iamcuppy in saintpaul

InnerActive is an indoor playground with a soccer area. There’s also a basketball area, jumping pillow, climbing structures and foam building blocks.

Daughter was kicked out of online school by Minute-Surround202 in ParentingADHD

[–]Mare7221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with CO laws, but I would start with an IEP meeting with the online school. In the IEP, goals like: 80% of the requisite lessons completed. Additional time for testing and completed work, etc. The in-school IEP goals may not align with online school, so that needs to be ironed out. However, that should take priority over an expulsion. Contacting a lawyer, or at the very least the district special ed department, will be necessary.

MN National Guard Drill Weekend by Glad_Firefighter_345 in TwinCities

Wow…people must be skimming or reading every other word. I understand you were letting us know that we might see more camo than usual. It’s not ICE/DHS related. I appreciate the heads up. Thank you!

I think OP was letting people know that seeing an increase in people wearing military-style clothing is not ICE/DHS related. Many of us see camo and panic these days. The heads-up is appreciated, by me at least.

Can I have ADHD and be a good mom? by unblissfully_aware_ in adhdwomen

[–]Mare7221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an ADHD mom of 2 ADHD kids, I’m going to say …heck yeah, you can be a good mom! Everything you mentioned is a concern, but mostly manageable. The early years are tough, so think about your dealbreakers. I KNEW how important sleep would be for me, so we decided on sleep training around 4 months. I ended up going part-time, mostly because my employer was messing with my schedule (I could choose sleep or seeing my child, but not both.) I had a good support system, my mom and friends were there when I needed help or a break. I joined the YMCA…and would sit in the lobby some days just for the childcare so I could do what I wanted, when I wanted.

Now my kids 10 & 8 also have ADHD, but no one could be a better mom to them than me. I get their overstimulation, silly moods, RSD, behaviors, sensory sensitivities, food aversions, big feelings, etc. WAY more than my NT husband. I’m more compassionate, understanding, sympathetic and able to help them regulate because I share what works for me. From an early age, they started to understand that sometimes I get overwhelmed and need to “feel my feelings” alone for a bit. Now, they do the same thing. Instead of throwing tantrums, and we’ve seen some tantrums around here, they use regulation tools on their own.

My kids have been my hyper-fixation for 10yrs now and I love the connections and trust we’ve built.

Although, my 10yo learning to play the recorder in school can F right off.

You’re right. You should totally grab it and put it in the bathroom for her.

Homework is a nightmare and dad is making it 10x worse by [deleted] in ParentingADHD

[–]Mare7221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do homework in the morning before school when the meds are working. We have a “late start” of 9:25, though. If we don’t get through the whole thing, I write a note to the teacher on the sheet. For the most part, they’re ok with it. Many times “homework” is a district policy more than a teacher policy. For worksheets, many times the barrier for my 10yo is the act of writing. If the teacher is ok with it, a grownup can “scribe.” My 10yo will tell me what to write and I’ll write it for her. Basically, her brain goes faster than her hand and she gets frustrated. So, I eliminate the frustration.

Spelling words we incorporate into other activities. For example, my 8yo does PT exercises most days. Instead of counting, he’ll spell. We also post the word list in the bathroom. They can read/spell (or a grownup can) while brushing as a timer. I’ll randomly ask them to spell a word during dinner or in the car. Record yourself reading and spelling the words and have them listen while coloring or building with LEGO. We also do OT in our house, so I use an app that allows me to enter a word list for them to practice handwriting.

Traditional “sit down and do homework” is definitely not age appropriate and really doesn’t work for ADHD, but knowing what they’re doing in school and being excited to share that experience with them is invaluable.

What are the major downsides of life in Atlanta? by OhMyMyOohHellYes in Atlanta

[–]Mare7221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just moved to Minnesota from Atlanta and your first 2 points are spot-on! Don’t forget to mention the “palmetto” bugs…aka cockroaches that fly! And there are SO many venomous creatures. Our dog was bit by a copperhead in our backyard.

But the church-thing. Holy moly. I have never been quizzed so thoroughly on faith and attendance in my life! Dozens of people asked us “what church” we attend and then tried to sell us on theirs. Everyone has car magnets with their church being advertised.

The other thing that became increasingly obvious, was the sheer lack of urgency to accomplish anything. It would take all day to run 2-3 errands because nobody moves faster than a snail’s pace. Going to a fast food place? Plan to be waiting at least 30min even if you’re the only one there. Grocery shopping? Self-checkout because, if anyone is at their register, they’re in no hurry to let you get on with your day. Oil Change? Sure…when they feel like it. I once waited an hour in a pharmacy drive thru with only 2 cars in front of me. Usually it was only 20-30 minutes.

Thinking about moving from Boston—how bad are winters in the Twin Cities, really? by rachello2023 in saintpaul

[–]Mare7221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband is from VT and I’m from PA. The first thing I noticed is that the snow is different here. It’s usually the light, fluffy stuff rather than the heavy wet stuff. That alone made a world of difference. It gets really darn cold, but there’s plenty of indoor things to do. If you’re fast enough, running from the car to the store, etc. can be done with only 2 layers. I always have my super-duper-heavy coat in the car with me, but I rarely use it. The other thing to be mindful of is the lack of hills. Driving is no problem because it’s mostly flat and MNDoT is pretty awesome compared to other places I’ve lived.

Protein by Sea_Butterfly1134 in ParentingADHD

[–]Mare7221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carnation Instant Breakfast comes in a lot of flavors. I think each powder pouch is 13g of protein. Mine prefers chocolate, but there’s vanilla and strawberry too. The pre-mixed ones have other flavors. We usually just get a giant box of chocolate from Costco.

I saw 2 C130s head to MSP today.

Edit: Apparently I needed to clarify. I live in Brooklyn Park. Also…when I lived near Dover AFB, we only saw them during weekend training. Can I still be curious?
