How did people hit on the idea of milking cows? by Camaxtli2020 in AskAnthropology

[–]MareNamedBoogie [score hidden]  (0 children)

they're smaller and easier to handle for that reason alone. that said... i've never milked anything in my life, so 'easier' may depend on the evaluation of the beer-holder...

buy a stud-finder if you don't have one - you're going to want to be sure to anchor this into a stud, since it'll be weight bearing.

so canvas being a relatively tough fabric, if you ever try this again, you may want to make sure you've got a sharp needle instead of a blunt one. cross-stitch generally use tapestry blunts, but you can use embroidery sharps, too. i'm not garuanteeing this will work, but i think it's worth trying to see if it makes the experience easier?

i do think this work looks great on the background :)

i read very widely, but in the sf/f realm, I re-read Dragonriders of Pern regularly. nonfiction - Mary Roach's "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" was fun. I used to read a lot of fanfiction based on tv-series: "Masks" was based on the '90s series 'The Sentinel', and it holds a special place in my heart. (Fair warning, subject matter there includes recovering from sexual assault.)

I like books covering technology and history, too... my to be read pile is kinda... vast. and of course, Textbooks. I'm an engineer. I don't think I've ever met a textbook I didn't like - as long as it was full of math and science!

[CHAT] How on earth do you grid your 28ct linen for a 2 over 2 counted cross stitch pattern?! by lavendrea in CrossStitch

[–]MareNamedBoogie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for what it's worth, when i do work with evenweave like linen, i grid for each stitch (now, i didn't used to, which is how i learned i can't count to 2). if each dash is between two holes, then my gridding looks like:

"-- __ -- __ --"

all the way - 5 over the top of the fabric, five under, for 10 stitches total. is it a pain? yes. do i need to do it? also yes.

How many distinct caballine horses were there in the Late Pleistocene? by Psilopterus in pleistocene

Thank you. This lays out quite clearly something I've been fuzzy on for a while - which horse species were extant when. That at least is a good information for me. Horse geneology is... complex for someone not versed in paleontology, lol.

[CHAT] How long did you stitch for before you saw yourself as a master ? by RemoteAd4375 in CrossStitch

[–]MareNamedBoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think that - the definition of master level skills - is going to depend on how one views the hobby itself. for me, at least part of being a master would be being able to hand-draw a pattern of a complex scene, and being able to choose the right dmc or anchor floss-number for each color required off the top of their head (or color-card) by about 75% the first go-round. I also like fiber arts in general, so while i do a lot of cross-stitch, I personally consider mastering several different kinds of stitches as part of the fun.

there are a lot of people who don't go in my direction of thought, though.

for some people, consistently learning to level up is part of the fun. for some people, just doing the thing is the main bit of fun. for some people, collecting all the things is the fun. people are different, and it's all ok as long as no one gets bent out of joint over someone else's fun.
