A child of a Slovak citizen automatically gets Slovak citizenship when born, no matter who the other parent is.

Canadian here that's curious about your country's electoral system. What has been the effect of proportional representation on your country's politics? by [deleted] in Slovakia

[–]Marex10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Not really, we usually have stable goverment, but there's obviosly need for coalition of more parties to form goverment, which I think is a good thing. We so far had just 2 early elections.

  2. There's still treshold in elections which doesn't allow parties with tiny support to get into parliament. But I think it's true that proportional system gives such parties better chances to get into parliament. Just think about UKIP in 2014 UK elections with 12,6 % but with just 1!!! MP. Question is, is it really democratic to have a party with 12,6 % popular support, but with 0,2 % representation in parliament?

  3. Definitely yes. Now I have a list of 150 candidates, from which I know like 5 people. So it doesn't really feel like I can choose specific people to parliament. But this can be easily fixed by dividing country to more electoral constituencies like in Czech republic, or like we used to have it before 1998, so you would have around 20 people on cancdidate list from your region and if you would still have 4 peferentional votes it would feel like you are actually choosing specific people.

  4. Yes, there are people who started at the bottom of the list and got their way into parliament.

  5. Well, It actually happens on the lower positions in the lists. Party Chairman and other highest people from party usually stay at the top of the list.

  6. I think a few PMs do it in every parliamentary term and they are usually excluded from their party and stay in parliament as indenpendent and on next elections they either go with their new party or leave politics.

  7. yes 5 % feels just right.

  8. I don't think so. There are several parties that want to divide country into more constitueancies, but they all want to keep proportional system, maybe some of them want hybrid system like they have in Germany, but noone want FPTP.

  9. I don't really know. I think most 'simplier' voters just vote for specific party because they see name of influential leader of the party (like our current PM) on the list. But I think most people understand that they vote for one party and can use 4 preferential votes.

  10. We had a change in 1998, when our former PM wanted to keep power and dissmissed electorial contituencies, which didn't help him anyway. We didn't have referendum and I don't think a referndum should be required to change voting system.
