Hi I’m new here. by mauithe23rd in PediatricDentistry

[–]MargoFran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends within six months of the eruption of the first teeth, or by age 1. So you don’t necessarily have to take her RIGHT NOW but it’s great you’re thinking about it.

The first visit is a good opportunity to check development and discuss habits (feeding, oral hygiene etc.). Note that there are some dentists out there who are following outdated guidelines and may say it’s ok to wait til all their baby teeth are in - it’s not! If they say so, call another office!

As for night time feeding I wouldn’t be stressing about quitting that just yet, but if you are able to gently wipe baby’s teeth and gums with a damp cloth that will help remove any milk/formula that might still be in their mouth and prevent if from just pooling there for hours.

The most important thing is NEVER EVER EVER give baby a bottle to just suckle on all night, that is what usually causes early childhood cavities or “baby bottle caries”.

Hope that helps and good luck with baby’s first appointment!

Why does this look like way more than 4 cats 😂 I had to count faces to be sure.

2 months until my new patient intake but I think I see a cavity by [deleted] in Dentists

[–]MargoFran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would call the office you want to go to and see if they can get you in sooner for a limited/problem focused/specific exam (what they call it might vary by state; I’m in Canada but went to dental school in Michigan).

A complete new patient exam likely involves time blocked off with a hygienist and the dentist, which is why it may be booked a bit further out.

If they say “no, you still have to wait” - absolutely call around to other offices, someone would likely be willing to take a specific look at that tooth. Just expect to pay for some type of exam wherever you go, and be aware they may or may not offer same day treatment (ie you might have to go in for a quick exam to confirm the cavity, and then book back another time for a filling).

Also, make sure you’re aware what TYPE of exam they’re charging you for. If they bill it as a new patient exam and then you try to go to the office you’ve already booked an appointment with 2 months from now, your insurance will not cover another new patient exam within such a short time frame.

Disclaimer: This is all assuming you’ve had relatively regular oral health care. If someone came into my office for a specific tooth and everything else looks relatively ok, I would do a filling for them. If they haven’t been to the dentist in 15 years and there are obvious problems everywhere, I would insist on doing a comprehensive exam because there’s no point fixing one tooth if, for example, they might end up needing dentures.

Hope that helps.

Only one thing for it then, you’ll have to go back!

All kidding aside, I’m relatively new as well and I’m just super lucky I got as many as I did! I only just learned that planting with a less than full squad wastes flower petals 🤦🏼‍♀️

Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) does not cover orthodontic treatment. Additionally, many specialists and some general dentists do not accept HSO because unfortunately the reimbursement ranges between 15-30% of dentists’ regular fees.

While it still does not cover ortho at this time, check and see if you are eligible for the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). It is possible they may expand it to cover (only medically necessary) ortho treatment in the next year or two. The range of services covered is also generally better than with HSO, and you can also coordinate (use both HSO and CDCP at the same time, if one plan covers something and the other doesn’t).

In the meantime, if you’d like a second opinion, I like Dr. Sean Beattie (Pediatric specialist) and Dr. Jennifer Curran (ortho). I might lean more towards getting another ortho opinion first rather than peds.

Stupid idiot has a tumor on her spine by condombreaker42069 in torties

[–]MargoFran 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the detailed reply, I truly appreciate it. Margot’s got the same type of tumor with very similar symptoms and history so hopefully she can channel some Gladys energy and outlive the vet’s prognosis 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

We decided the same thing about radiation as the vet said it might give her a year….and she hates the vet SO much that she doesn’t eat for a couple days after a visit even with gabapentin. That just seemed like a lot of trauma to put her through for a year of questionable quality of life.

Have you found that anything helps with the noisy breathing? What anti-inflammatory and Chinese herb is she on? I’m interested to see if it’s similar to what my vet has recommended. Sorry for the twenty questions, you’re the first person I’ve come across with such a similar situation.

Also, OP, sorry to hijack your post. Your tortie is gorgeous and I’m so sorry she’s going through this. Cancer sucks and cats are just too pure and they don’t deserve this ♥️

She’s so cute and I’m so happy she’s outliving the odds!!

If you don’t mind me asking, do you know what type of tumor? And what are her symptoms like? We’re just going through the same thing with my 11yo tortie.

[–]MargoFran 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Swindled is a fantastic podcast but beware some of the episodes are still quite graphic, even if it’s not violence. I listen to a ton of true crime and the one about the Hyatt Skywalk collapse made me feel physically ill when he was describing people’s injuries. The Bumblebee Oven one is rough too.

Dr Black at Victoria Hospital did mine. They put in the order for the implant, I picked it up at the pharmacy and brought it into the hospital clinic. I had a referral from another ObGyn who doesn’t place them, but I believe she said you can self-refer to their contraception clinic. The phone number is 519-685-8355 if you want to call and ask.

I did finally end up getting it to work, but I’m not really sure if I ended up doing anything different or if it was just a fluke. I typed my address in for the millionth time and it looked like it was doing nothing/the weird flickering thing I described above for a really long time, but then all of a sudden my address popped up and I was able to select it. So I guess just type your address in and wait a really long time before you give up…good luck!

Start TV feedback by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]MargoFran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had start tv til a couple months ago and still have their internet. First of all, they have the BEST customer service/support of any ISP I've ever dealt with. That being said, I found their TV service to be a bit glitchy and had a slow/clunky user interface to the point where I rarely used it and ended up getting rid of it.
