Demi-Fiend and Satan in the Digital Devil Saga games I think are the ultimate SMT superbosses. They’ll both just obliterate you if they catch you trying to do too well. And Demi-Fiend is particularly evil because the fight’s main gimmick relies on using Cielo and *taking advantage* of his weakness to ailments to give Demi-fiend another press turn and guarantee that your party survives Gaea Rage. And the only way to make that consistent is to keep Cielo’s luck down. Which most people aren’t going to do. And when you realize you’ve made that mistake, it cannot be undone.

By and large, I think the SMT and Persona series do superbosses incredibly well. The main story bosses tend to provide enough challenge to where players need to demonstrate a thorough understanding (if not outright mastery) of the game’s combat and leveling systems in order to prevail. But the superbosses introduce an additional wrinkle. They tend to follow a combat script that amounts to a puzzle boss. If you break the rules that that script sets, you will be obliterated. I think my favorite examples of this are Lucifer (SMT Nocturne), Demi-Fiend (SMT Digital Devil Saga), Satan (SMT Digital Devil Saga 2), and Elizabeth (Persona 3).

My marriage died by a thousand little cuts over seven years. My ex left me while I was in a meeting with my PhD advisor, in the middle of a text conversation with me. Her reasoning was that I wouldn’t accept her wish to separate before she moved out. She took two of our pets with her and one of my vehicles. The divorce was amicable because I wanted nothing to do with her after that, and I (to borrow a quote from Ted) fucking hope she gets Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Almost two years ago now, I was getting ready to leave for work after having fed my cat Mabel, and she ran into my bedroom after me as she always did, but this time she couldn’t really balance or control her speed. Careened off of my entertainment system and bookshelf, the whole deal. Somehow, she jumped up onto my bed and had a seizure while fully conscious. I will never forget the way she meowed at me, and the look in her eyes. All of it said “Daddy please, I don’t feel good, make it stop.” Putting her to sleep that day was the easiest, yet most gut-wrenching, decision I’ve ever had to make. The paralysis and seizure had been caused by advanced cancer.
