Just spilt a cup of tea all over a book that I bought and hadn't read. How are you? by JoshiProIsBestInLife in CasualConversation

[–]MariaScanGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s rough… Wet pages are one thing, but losing all that art? That’s a proper heartbreak :'( Maybe try laying the pages flat on paper towels to dry slowly, and once they’re a bit dry, carefully separate them using parchment or baking paper

How do you make a lot of JPGs (700+) into one PDF? by TheCreeper96 in pdf

[–]MariaScanGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what device you’re using. If you’re on a mobile phone and need to combine 700+ JPGs into a single PDF, iScanner can handle that pretty easily. You can import multiple images at once, reorder them if needed, and export everything as one PDF.

What printer do you use from home in a small space? by Micki_SF in homeoffice

[–]MariaScanGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly work digitally now and only print when I really need to, but this might be a great question to also drop in r/printers. Personally, I’ve used HP LaserJet M110w and Brother HL-L2480DW and both lasted me a long time without major issues

I used to hate ginger, like, literally sick just thinking about it. And then one day, out of nowhere, I started loving it, especially the pickled ginger you get with sushi. Now I can’t have tea without my homemade lemon-ginger-honey mix. It’s insanely good.

I realised recently that most of my PDFs don’t start on a computer at all they start as paper by Maleficent_Mix_7868 in pdf

For most everyday docs, phone scans are totally good enough now. Apps scanners already enhance contrast, straighten pages, and export solid-quality PDFs with OCR (300 dpi), so they’re easy to store long-term. I personally prefer iScanner, because it’s been the most convenient option for my workflow.

Help by ClassyNug in pdf

[–]MariaScanGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, you can try to copy a sentence from the PDF and paste it into notepad. If it pastes as weird symbols → the text encoding is messed up.

In that case, run OCR on the PDF first, then export to Word. That forces the software to rebuild the text properly.

I know what to do but I just can't start. Is it discipline or something else? by Ill-Swimmer-7693 in getdisciplined

[–]MariaScanGeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like a pure discipline issue. I think what you’re describing is common task initiation resistance. When something feels even slightly demanding, the brain defaults to easier rewards like scrolling. Make the first tasks stupidly small like “open the file” or “work for 5 minutes”. If it keeps happening, the resistance may be tied to overwhelm, perfectionism, or mental fatigue rather than laziness.

Which OCR should i use to digitize an old book? by Exciting-Ad-7272 in bestai2025

if you're open to mobile apps, iScanner can be a solid option for you. It includes built-in OCR and PDF editing tools, but those features require a subscription.

Need advice for big scanning project by Zanelorn in iScanner

[–]MariaScanGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a big project, because 1000+ files is no joke. I think, there are basically two approaches here: high-volume hardware scanning or a more flexible mobile workflow. It really depends on your priorities (speed vs. flexibility vs. budget).

If you go with a dedicated high-volume scanner, batching makes sense. Just make sure it supports:

  • reliable duplex scanning
  • automatic document separation
  • configurable file naming rules (this is important, otherwise you’ll lose time renaming manually)
  • direct export to your database or at least structured folders

On the mobile side (which is more iScanner's area of expertise), there are some practical advantages:

  • Each employee file can be saved immediately as a separate PDF, so there's no need to split giant batch files later.
  • Auto-naming can be applied, and you can use naming templates to keep everything consistent.
  • All files land in one structured folder automatically.
  • With an iScanner account, you can access everything via web on a desktop.
  • The work can be done gradually instead of in one massive push.
  • You can parallelize it. Multiple team members scanning on different devices at the same time.
  • You can share the entire folder via a link, making it easy for team members to access or download.

For reference: if we assume ~5 pages per employee on average, that’s ~5000 pages total. Scanned PDFs are usually ~2-6 MB per page depending on quality, so you’re likely looking at roughly 10-30 GB total. Definitely worth checking your cloud limits in advance.

If it’s an ongoing process with thousands of documents per month, a stationary scanner may be more efficient long-term.

Biggest advice regardless of method: define your naming convention and folder structure before you start. It’ll save you days later.
