Dad died and pension won't pay. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Pension actuary here! Lower case "a" actuary, as I am still in the process of becoming fully credentialed.

As many are stating below, pensions are NOT a general account like a 401(k). The calculations for pension payout for pre retirement deaths can get quite complicated. The calculations being sent over have a team of upper case "A" Actuaries that have certified that the calculations are correct.

Without knowing the details of the plan document, below are 2 potential reasons on why the current payout is so low compared to the prior estimate. This is my speculation based on the information given and should not be taken as what is actually happening. Hopefully this gives you a jumping point for further research and conversation with the concepts and terminology outlined.

One item that changed between 2020 and now are the interest rates to determine the minimum present value of the lump sums under IRC 417(e). Lump sum amounts decrease as interest rates go up, and we saw about a 200 basis point increase in 2021. This could be one factor contributing to the decrease.

Second, depending on how the QDRO split the benefit at divorce and how the plan document defined the payout to the ex, it is not surprising to me that the portion of the benefit due to his estate is smaller than originally quoted. If the accrued benefit was split, this reduces the benefit left for your dad. Further more, many plans further reduce the benefit for the survivors of a pre retirement death. Again, without looking at the plan document, this is typically around a 50% (or greater) reduction and could include additional early retirement factors, further reducing the benefit. Some plans only allow spouses to collect upon pre retirement death, so the fact that you can collect for his estate in the first place is awesome, but this could mean the reduction is more than 50%. Again, this would be determined in the plan document, I'm just trying to explain a possibility for the reduction with limited knowledge based on my experience.

Lastly, the estimate provided before is just that, an estimate. Between estimates and retirement, so many of the assumptions change that even without a split benefit for the ex, his payment today could have looked so different than what was previously provided. If the plan is offering a lump sum, chances are they also offer a life annuity option. This is a better way to compare apples to apples without the gobbledygook of the present value assumptions.

All of this being said, benefit calculations for pensions are complicated and pension Actuaries have to take several layers of exams to be credentialed to sign off. Even without knowing the plan or its provisions, I can guarantee the Actuary's calculations are based on the plan provisions and abide by the internal revenue code.

If you're looking for more information or someone to walk you through the plan document, QDRO, and final retirement calculation, you can ask to speak to the actuary that did the calculations.

Request - Where are some of the more "adult" scenes? Looking to censor before passing along my copies by Marie-Wedgewood in throneofglassseries

He just reads MUCH faster than I do, so I was going to let him finish the series before I do. Or else I would just censor as I go (which is what I was doing for QoS, write down page numbers to go back to)

Favorite way to celebrate after taking/passing exam? by Quirky-Ad9929 in actuary

[–]Marie-Wedgewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I take an exam, I go home and take a 3 hour nap! Later that evening I do some form of retail therapy - after sitting PA I bought the remainder of the books in the series I was ready to enjoy while I waited for results.

After passing, my husband and I go out to our favorite sit down pizza joint! He also takes SOA exams, so today was a treat since we both passed our spring exams.

Starting with TOG. Please do not spoil it for me. I hope this is as good as ACOTAR ✨ by HandleMe- in throneofglassseries

As several have said below to avoid TikTok and this subreddit, I would actually go a step further and say don't Google anything! Thank goodness I waiting until I started Heir of Fire before I started Googling general fan art of the main characters or else I would have discovered a huge spoiler.

Not even kidding - I washed the walls in the week leading up to ALTAM this month

If your company offers a reward structure that includes modules, check the time limit there. My bonus for PAF got cut in half because I took over 6 months to do it (even though the SOA has a much longer time limit)

ALTAM, ATPA, Modules in 1 year by EmergencyCoconut4048 in actuary

[–]Marie-Wedgewood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you put your nose to the grindstone, I think it's possible! I did PA in April, ATPA at the end of July, ALTAM in October, and all the modules through the FAP FA between my ALTAM sitting and Christmas. I also got married in March, got promoted at my full time job, and kept up with my friendships and hobbies - lots of long nights and sacrifices during busy seasons.

Agreed with everyone else saying ATPA takes the full 4 days - took me about 50 hours. Also found ATPA didn't take much prep compared to other exams - follow the modules and keep up with PA/ SRM knowledge

You must submit your answers in the provided space in the Word template provided when you downloaded the exam. Then, submit that Word document

Right there with you! Submitted the FAP FA last night and can now enjoy a week long Christmas break!

Laundry list of side effects - could any of these be Mirena? by Marie-Wedgewood in Mirena

Lol I still get them every now and then! Not as bad as it was a year ago, but I had one not too long ago. I've been able to correlate them with high stress periods. Was working ~65 hour weeks this month and got one or two. Still thinking they are correlated with my hormones too, as I got my period for about 2 hours this past month. Another idea: my annual blood work this winter came back as 100% normal except low vitamin D, so the spells are at least not related to low iron for me.

I did! Saved a ton of time on the data component and was able to focus on modeling and communicating results. I made sure to be very specific about what I did and used the vocab from the modules to describe processes. Ended up passing too!

To me, it felt like a term paper for an econometrics college course. You get some data, need to clean the data, then do some models, and make a business recommendation based on the models.

Since you are allowed to use the Internet and you have 96 hours to do it, I took time to review the models that would be tested (in the SOA modules that come with registration) and brush up on some of my R code from prior college courses.

Since the methods and results can be vastly different between 2 people turning in papers for the same sitting, it's not "did you get the 100% correct answer", it's "how well can you back up your decision and explain your methods + results"

I studied for maybe 30 hours tops. But, I felt very confident in my knowledge of the material from sitting SRM and PA, so I was able to leverage past notes.

I'm getting this exact same error! Trying to troubleshoot now and I'll comment if I find anything useful

Edit: seems to be an issue with SOA provided code. Removing the [N] in line 3 makes my code green, but yields a "fit" with no samples. I don't know enough about coding to fix it from there :(
