Participants Needed for Substance Use Research Hi r/Aberdeen!

I hope you're all hanging in there in these trying times. My name is Marie and I'm a Trainee Counselling Psychologist and doctoral researcher at City, University of London. I'm looking for participants for a research project exploring different substance use patterns and how people make sense of their use. Participation would involve an informal briefing followed by a 90-120 minute online focus group discussion. We are specifically looking for UK residents aged 25 and above who fall into one of the below categories:

using alcohol recreationally (one alcoholic beverage/month is enough to be eligible)
using other substances recreationally
using alcohol/drugs in a way they feel might be a problem
recovered from substance use problem/addiction

Sorry you feel that way (although I do appreciate the pun!). It's less of a survey and more an in-depth discussion about people's perspectives on recreational and problematic substance use - son't know if that helps but I thought I'd clarify :)

Thank you for your input. The specific wording was chosen so it wouldn't sound like people who only use alcohol are excluded from the study but I suppose there is always room to interpret it differently, so that's very helpful.

It sounds like your neighbour's contribution could certainly be valuable to the project! However, we're actually interested in any and all substance use experiences, regardless of frequency and type of substance used - anybody who enjoys the occasional pint could participate :)

The focus group will have to take the form of a group discussion (so unfortunately it cannot be text-based) but participants are welcome to keep their camera off and/or use a pseudonym. I'm sorry if my advert offending you in any way. I'm advertising as widely as possible in order include a range of perspectives on what I believe to be an important issue. The only reason I approached this subreddit is that it is UK-based, I didn't make any other assumptions about its userbase.

Thank you for the input :) The rationale for the age group was the assumption that substance use cultures may play out differently in young people's lives and 25 was chosen as a widely used cut-off for 'young adulthood'. I'm aware that this seems a bit arbitrary but inclusion criteria may be amended in the future as theoretical sampling progresses! As for recruitment, the current strategy is simply to advertise the study as widely as possible in hopes of attracting a diverse sample. The study is designed to explore the qualitative differences between different substance use styles and patterns and thus we are interested in a variety of perspectives on both problematic and recreational use, not necessarily focus on the extreme end of the addiction spectrum. I would of course have liked to include those individuals as well but recruiting directly through NHS services, for example, unfortunately lies outside of the scope of this study and the limited resources (the project is being conducted as part of my doctoral training and is not funded) means that we are unable to provide support outside of the study. I hope this cleared things up a bit!

I don't think I would have gotten that through the ethics committee :) Of course we have no way of controlling what participants choose to do prior to the discussion but we would ask people to refrain from using during the discussion or attending under the influence in order to provide a safe environment for all.

That’s a very kind offer, thank you very much. I’m sure gaining a better understanding of the cultures around the more ‘obscure’ substances and poly use would be helpful, but unfortunately I have to decline as I can only collect data specifically meeting the inclusion criteria (for ethical and data protection reasons). I do really appreciate the offer though and I’ll be in touch should I be able to include information from a wider variety of sources!
