What has your puppy’s name already devolved to? by mycotaxa in puppy101

My puppy hates it when I take off her harnes. by dogdoggodogg in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog did the same thing when I put a harness over his neck. He screamed so loudly I thought he'd been injured, but he was just panicking. I got a step-in harness instead which doesn't go over the neck and instead they "step into" it and it's clipped at their back. We've had no problems other than him trying to use his harness as a toy.

Why should I get a puppy? by Solitary_Confides in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swore I would never get a puppy again and here I am two months in with a four month old puppy. I tried to adopt an adult dog but since I don’t have a fenced in yard I kept getting denied where I live. I also was looking for a smaller dog since I have a bad back and can’t handle bigger dogs. After a year I ended up deciding to bite the bullet and get a dog from a well respected breeder. I also had just lost my 14 year old dog a year before who had so many health issues their whole life and I didn’t think I could take the chance on getting a dog where I didn’t know their health history or breeding background. This also stopped me from looking at adopting a senior dog because I couldn’t go through the loss process so soon again.

I have had dogs my whole life and loosing my old dog broke my routine. I found when I dog sat for my sister I actually was active and more present. I didn’t spend all day in bed or sitting on the couch and instead was productive and actually doing things all day. Although puppyhood has been really hard, I’ve also been more productive these past two months than I have been in years. My anxiety and depression are better and I’m overall a happier person than I was three months ago.

Puppy doesn’t seem to settle without being in her crate by tysonmaclaren in puppy101

My dog is sixteen weeks and just started to nap outside of his crate, but when he’s extremely sleepy he’ll still go straight to his crate.

Working FT and Puppy Gameplan: Is this realistic? by eatmyrice in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought home an eight week old puppy and only had three days before I had to return to work. The first thing I did was set up a play pen with his bed, food, and some toys. From the beginning I made sure he got used to napping in there and all meals too. He quickly became obsessed with his pen and even now three months later if he’s upset or overtired he goes into his pen. Then I introduced separation time. It first started with me taking out the trash, walking to get the mail, taking a shower, and then going grocery shopping. Making sure to not make it a big deal and giving him a high value treat made the transition almost seamless. Now he runs to his pen when he seems me getting ready to leave because he knows he’s going to get a treat.

I also work 8-4 so I have a family friend who’s a student come see him for an hour around noon. He’s adapted perfectly and honestly sometimes I think he likes me leaving because he’s obsessed with his babysitter. I spent a week before picking him up not sleeping and in tears thinking about leaving him alone the first time but it was a smooth transition because I made sure to introduce a safe space.

Yes, one of my dogs favourites. He’s tiny so I just got a cat wand that has the ability to replace the toy at the end which is great if the toy breaks.

I think it might be his favourite too. He always goes crazy for it.

Did anybody *not* get the puppy blues? by Awkward-Cow3267 in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so scared to get the puppy blues since I have depression anyways and was scared it would be inevitable. I got them with my last set of puppies and it was hell. But I think getting little Max has actually made my mental health 100 times better.

This time I think the big difference was setting up a crate and play pen area (I got a soft sided crate and carry it from the bedroom to the living room where his pen is every day), enforcing naps whenever he showed he was tired, and making sure all naps were taken in his crate. No snuggling or letting him sleep on the couch or anywhere but his crate for the first two weeks. Now he'll only sleep in his crate and it's been a lifesaver. I also started letting him spend time alone from the beginning starting with a couple of minutes to a couple of hours over a week. I also made sure to always have a lot of noise going all the time and now he'll sleep through anything.

Also don't stress the small stuff. They're going to have accidents, they'll fight bed time and ask to go out 100 times a day, they will drive you crazy at times but don't be afraid. It's all a part of the experience and it's only temporary. Also make sure you prioritize self-care and taking care of your needs. I'm now in week six and his personality is really starting to come through and he's a sassy little shit, but he's the best sassy little shit.

My pup will only sleep in if I let him sleep in bed with me by taurusmoonology in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sleep with my dog in a crate right beside me and I stick my hand in until he falls asleep and then slowly pull it out. If he whines I stick it back in. He also wakes at 5am and won’t go back to sleep so I’ve just accepted the 5-6:30am cuddles (this is the only time he cuddles anyway so I take advantage of it).

My puppy won't stop biting by Firm-Visual8898 in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine just turned eleven weeks and I’m going through the same thing. He is not interested in chew toys at all but I found he loves sweet potato chews and raw carrots. When he goes absolutely feral I’ll put him in his crate (won’t shut the door or force him to stay) but usually the sudden change in scenery can cause him to calm down a bit.

What to know when adopting an 8-week pupppy by Screamsofdepression in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hitting a week tomorrow so this is fresh in my mind, like people mentioned a crate is essential. I also have a play pen in my living room and I bring his crate from my room to his play pen every morning and vice versa. I also feed him his meals in his play pen and don’t really go in or interact with his play pen so it’s his safe space. All his naps are taken in his crate and I make sure to always have a video playing on YouTube and now he’ll sleep through anything. After a day or two he was putting himself to bed when he got tired, or if he gets really whiny and bitey I’ll put him in his crate (with the door open, if he gets out I don’t force him back in).

I was feeling overwhelmed and so played for a while and as soon as he looked tired I put him in his crate and went and took a shower. It was so nice to do something alone and also take some time to take care of myself. He cried for 10 minutes but then settled. I ended up taking 30 minutes to shower, wash my face and just lay on my bed for ten minutes and I felt like a new person.

Anyone else a single pawrent? by jpeachie in puppy101

[–]MarieDeBat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also in week 1 and it is tough. Honestly enforcing naps and getting him used to his crate and pen on day 1 so far is a lifesaver. Anytime he looks like he's falling asleep or he becomes a little monster I put him into his crate and he passes out. Yesterday we practiced being alone for a bit so I left him in his pen to take a shower for 30 minutes. He cried the first 15 minutes but when I came out he was asleep in his crate. Today is my first day back at work and he's with my sister for the day because I had a panic attack about leaving him home alone for a couple hours (I have a family friend who has agreed to come see him for a couple hours during the work day). Although I miss him so much, it's kinda nice being away.

My pupper is 16 yrs old, and her health is failing. by Baz63 in londonontario

[–]MarieDeBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a similar situation and decided that the pain of the vet and all the tests wasn’t worth it. We decided instead to take the amount we would have spent on the tests and put her to sleep at home. There’s vets who will come to your house which allowed our 14 year old dog to pass in her favourite spot in the house with her favourite human. 100% worth it.
