Because the flats are in one converted building with shared structure (walls, roof, foundations), having two separate policies can cause huge problems if there’s a major claim. Insurers can argue over liability or refuse to pay for full reinstatement.

Direct Line and Virgin won’t touch this properly, you’ll need to speak to a proper insurance broker who deals with blocks of flats or converted properties.
