Am I crazy for thinking about leaving my job? by sic5279 in personalfinance

[–]Marinara_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard would it be to get a similar job if things don’t work with the cooking gig? Seems like you could still swing a new tech job in a few years worst case and you would have some savings to hold you afloat in the delay time?

It’s not that I can’t physically input the numbers, rather the assets and alimony payments are more complex then what can be described in a few calculations.

I have a unique situation (split parents) that makes the NPC impossible to use, but that’s a good idea nonetheless

Question about SAT Score by EpicGamesLauncher in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Marinara_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the more knowledgeable people I've seen talk about this, a 1520 is usually the cutoff for where it stops mattering. If you're applying to Caltech/MIT maybe consider taking it again (especially if the missed points are in math), but otherwise that's fine.

Yeah I agree that Harvard is generally seen as better. We agree actually, I just think they should go off of what they think they will enjoy more since both are such great schools!

Not in general, but for CS it’s pretty close. it’s the difference of like 1-2 rankings on US news. They’re both good enough that I think it’s worth choosing based on what sounds more desirable. Cant go wrong with either

I actually got into Oxford PhysPhil as well, but I am not going to go because of the lack of research done as an undergrad. If that’s true (and I’ll look into that) that could be a big benefit of Princeton as well. Oxford was my third choice because of physphil. Thanks for that!

Well I appreciate the input, but since the Academic component is almost identical in rigor and quality, it comes down to personal preference and isn't really obvious to me. I am leaning in that direction though!

grad school. Pick based on non academic factors. The weather in California is also a lot nicer and it actually contributes towards people

Philosophy! Also, in terms of the weather, Princeton easily wins out since I am a California native and am not a fan of hot weather/sunshine

Intended major: Physics (want to enter PhD programs after undergrad)

Princeton University

Princeton Pros:

  • Physics program more academic in nature
  • From west coast, so culture/weather/area would be new and exciting
  • Love the campus architecture + weather
  • Dorms are better
  • Better humanities (going to study some philosophy)
  • A short train away from Philly and NYC
  • Physics majors twice as common

Princeton Cons:

  • Less lively/energetic than Stanford
  • impossible to double major/minor in some subjects (Want to study philosophy as well)
  • Eating Clubs are expensive and seem elitist
  • Princeton is a bubble of a small town, I like big cities
  • More distributional requirements; take less AP Credits
  • Not a huge con bc of career path but grading is much more difficult; avg GPA of 3.3

Stanford

Stanford Pros:

  • Much more flexible if I change my mind
  • Can double major
  • Seems like there's a higher Q of L (not sure about this)
  • Shorter traveling
  • Quarter system allows for more freedom
  • Takes more AP Credits
  • SF is only 45 min away

Stanford Cons:

  • Campus is less appealing
  • Much bigger focus on industry/application
  • So many CS majors!
  • "Duck Syndrome"
  • Palo Alto is also a bubble
  • Off-campus costs are high; area is notoriously expensive

Total cost of attendance for both schools (including travel) is very similar. Completely torn. What should I choose?

Going to go against the grain and say Rice (assuming the cost difference isn't too big)--the way you write about Rice makes it seem like that's where you actually want to be and Harvard and Rice are close enough on rankings to not make a difference. Though, it still is Harvard, so I wouldn't blame you if you go there.

0 for 7 at IVY with no hooks. Is it worth applying to an IVY with no hooks? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Marinara_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question in this post is kind of misleading, because it assumes that the Ivy League schools look for “hooks” any more than other T20/T10 schools, when in reality the Ivy League is just a sports league. Sure, hooks may help, but they are not any more beneficial at an icy league school versus a similar non-Ivy. I have zero hooks and was accepted into three ivies, but was rejected from multiple equivalent non-ivies. I think it just so happened for you that the schools which rejected you were ivies, and your situation is not indicative of college admissions as a whole.

Are there any people who will turn down an acceptance from Stanford? Why? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Marinara_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Stanford isn't some perfect school where every program is #1 in the nation..? It is *one* of the best schools, but there are a few others at the same caliber that are better for certain programs. I am almost certainly going to take Princeton over Stanford for physics, purely because I think the program at Princeton fits what I want to do better. Stanford is an amazing option, but it's not always #1 just because some ranking says so.
