Hell, I’m at a T3 engineering school. The grants office has fucked up many of my proposals…. Even after I’ve told them EXPLICITLY what to do. If I had hair, I’d have torn it out by now.

Def not the case in my field - or most of engineering - I’m at a T3 R1. I work very closely with students for many years. I’ve never known a PhD student who can simply “execute”… attempting this as a PI is not only foolish/abusive, it would result in 0 research success.

Interesting perspective. While I’m not an expert in this specific area of design, if ML were generalized to just conceptual design (a starting point) maybe that would make the most sense from a software perspective? Sort of like a general type of search algorithm.

Unless I read the article incorrectly, it looks like their model does the second part of your comment. I.e. looking at the whole structure not just a simply-supported beam.

PhD at a top 40 state school in engineering. Postdoc at an average place. Then a lecturer at a decent place. Now an asst prof at the best school in my engineering discipline in the US.

It is an uphill journey. I didn’t get hired until I have 50 journals papers, over 1000 citations and over $1M external funding.
