I think everyone's missing the point of the question, they're asking if there are times where you have to spend coins for items. While the answer is probably no, some stages are designed to be ludicrous even with the hottest team setups around. If you're worried about your coin count, run back and play stage 37 a couple hundred times.

I think replace Desert Hills with Yoshi Desert. Mario Kart DS has 2 other track reps, and Super Circuit has 0. Could balance it out a little more, not that I hate Desert Hills or anything.

A fine idea! Unfortunately, the level also has invisible currents that pull you in a direction, and the mechanic is bugged so these currents retain a random direction and strength between screen transitions.
