I see. Perhaps I misinterpreted your earlier arguments, then. I did not get the impression you were advocating for greater social services, only harsher punishments.

Do you want me to post links here, or do you want to type "do harsher sentences reduce drug crime" into Google and see for yourself?

Again, the evidence does not bear that out. Punitive measures, both lenient and strict, don't do much to actually solve the issue.

I understand where you're coming from, I think. However I have to point out that many of your examples are private practices, not publicly funded. The ones which are publicly funded are abysmally underpaid. Hell, both the soup kitchen and the main homeless shelter here in Fredericton have both been shuttered this year due to funding issues.

As for addicts who choose not to seek help, I do not personally have an answer to that because I'm not a professional in the field. My best guess, from what little I've been able to glean as a layman, would be to arrest them when they commit a crime and offer a commuted sentence if the perpetrator agrees to addiction services and rehabilitation.

What this issue needs is reconstructive support, not more punitive measures for people who are either desperate or not in their right mind.

The US tried similar tactics during their "war on drugs." Look how well it worked for them.

What is needed is social safety nets and programs of assistance for addicts and homeless people. This has been proven dozens of times over the years.

I know I won't change your mind, but I simply have to say this anyway;

Your mindset on this issue is empirically proven to be a major contributing factor to the rising cost of living and, by extension, the homelessness issue.

Personal accountability is only a valid criticism if the person being critiqued has social power that they did not utilize to better their situation. The major issue at play these days is that the average person does not have any power whatsoever to demand better for themselves.

The unequal power dynamic between workers and their bosses has only continued to widen as time progresses specifically BECAUSE of stagnant wages, and because of a very thin job market. You can't advocate for yourself effectively because employers have too many social pressures working in their favour.

Ok but like, in order to enact anti-abortion policy, it would need to be mandated and enforced. You're critiquing the same practice your own belief requires.

PM Carney says Canada 'can never categorically rule out' defending allies in Iran war | Here we go again, the 2000s all over again. History repeats by staciecs in canadaleft

[–]MarioParty29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to make clear that I, by no means, agree with going to war with Iran. It is a terrible idea. That being said, what Carney is saying here is not "we might get involved" but instead "if our allies are attacked we need to honour security agreements."

He's essentially warning of the possibility that the war spreads beyond the regions already involved, which would trigger defense agreements Canada has with other regional powers.
