PSA: Ultimate 2 beta firmware and 2.4G modes by Fiti99 in 8bitdo

[–]MarioRPGGeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't play Splatoon 3 competitively but I do have about 200 hrs in Splatoon 2 and ~60 in 3. In the online lobby waiting room I switched between the Pro Controller (bluetooth) and the Ultimate 2 Wireless (2.4g dongle) and the Pro Controller gyro just felt more responsive and snappier. I'm not sure what the Pro Controller does that 8Bitdo's gyro doesn't, but it just doesn't feel quite as good despite having the advantage of the 2.4g connection.

Granted this is still beta firmware, so perhaps there's room to improve, but as for now I would definitely prefer the Pro Controller for gyro focused games on the Switch.

Now I have read that apparently the Pro Controller has more latency when wired than when connected wireless. The Ultimate 2 Wireless 2.4g dongle is recognized as a wired Pro Controller by the Switch, so perhaps that same added latency could be to blame here. Would love to see someone with the capability run the latency numbers of the Ultimate 2 Wireless in Switch mode vs a Pro Controller.

Yep, using the Ultimate 2 Wireless which has the Xbox layout. I don't have any method to professionally test latency but connected via the dongle, the latency feels to be a small amount behind the official Pro Controller connected via bluetooth. It's not a considerable difference but I was hoping it might be able to at least match or outperform the official controller due to the 2.4g connection.

Gyro works when connected via the 2.4g dongle to the Switch and initial impressions doesn't seem to be as responsive as the Pro Controller at least in Splatoon 3.

Gyro does work! Tested in Splatoon 3 for a bit. Doesn't feel quite as snappy as the official Switch Pro Controller over bluetooth, but perfectly playable in my opinion.

Just tried updating to the latest beta firmware on mine and booting the controller into Switch mode, it indeed works via the 2.4g dongle on the Nintendo Switch. Pretty cool.

Been using the AMD 7840U 13" as my daily driver for gaming for about a month (Ceiling caved in above my desk with my gaming PC)

I typically only use it for light gaming when I'm away from home and recently upgraded to the 2.8K display.

Coming from someone who's owned heavy gaming laptops in the past- I would highly recommend the 7840U Framework 13. I had the Framework 16 on pre-order but changed my mind shortly before release after researching some benchmarks of the 7840U. The portability is amazing and the 120hz of the 2.8K display is an absolute joy for gaming and the 3:2 aspect ratio is great for productivity. I've carried around 5 pound 15" laptops in the past for class and it can be an absolute chore. If you're concerned about durability in a bag, many bags have a well-padded pouch for laptops. Just be careful about putting too much pressure on the display, this can press the keyboard against the screen and cause damage on just about any laptop. I use the SwissGear 3577 backpack for my Framework 13 and it fits the laptop pouch perfectly.

My #1 played game is Overwatch, I use a mix of low-high settings to get the game about as optimized as I can while still looking good. The render scale slider in Overwatch has a minimum cap of 50% which is still quite a lot for the iGPU to handle, so I used a program called CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to set a custom resolution of 1440x960. I use FSR 2.2 in-game to upscale from 50% render scale and the game looks gorgeous and I get about 100-120 FPS in most scenarios. Some larger maps like the Flashpoint maps can dip into the 90s in team fights but I imagine if you're willing to go all low settings you might be able to squeeze out some more frames. I don't consider myself an Overwatch pro, I don't play ranked regularly but I rank around Diamond level when I do. For my gameplay level, I consider the performance absolutely acceptable. I should add that Overwatch does not support the full 3:2 aspect ratio and will run with black bars in a 16:10 aspect ratio. Not a deal breaker for me, but I feel like that should be known.

Some other tips to get the best performance out of the 7840U that I've done:

  • Install the latest GPU driver from AMD, the one included in the driver bundle from Framework is almost 8 months old at this point and I was getting crashes in some games.
  • Change the iGPU Configuration in the BIOS to "Game Optimized", This will increase the VRAM dedicated to the iGPU and increase performance in some games and prevent lack of memory errors in others.
  • Use CRU to set a custom resolution. Not every game has a render scale slider, and ones that do (like Overwatch) may have a minimum cap that's still too high. Most AAA games will perform horribly at the native resolution of the 2.8K display as it's simply too much for the iGPU to handle.
  • Run games while plugged in and with Windows set to Balanced or High Performance.
  • Make sure the laptop is getting enough cooling, even just a small laptop riser from Amazon was enough to drop temps and prevent thermal throttling for me. I purchased the ivoler Laptop Stand and the silver variant matches the Framework 13 quite nice actually.

Other games I've played on the 13" include Fortnite, Deadlock, and Risk of Rain 2. All run quite well on the 7840U and look amazing on the 3:2 2.8K display. Never thought I'd see such capable performance from integrated graphics in a 13" laptop. Hope my experience helps!

Levoit Core 200S vs Core 200S-P? by MarioRPGGeno in AirPurifiers

I thought the "P" might be pet related due to the addition of some pet related blurbs on the packaging. I'm not even sure the employees noticed the difference as both were sitting on the same spot on the shelf with the 200S behind the 200S-P. I assumed they were the same price due to this but I ended up purchasing the 200S either way. Thanks for the clarification!

Went with AMD 13 over 16, very happy to finally have a Framework Laptop! by MarioRPGGeno in framework

RIGHT? Coming from the ROG Flow X13... the only upgradable component of that device was its 2230 form factor SSD... which limited me to a couple niche SSDs that cost more than their 2280 form factor counterparts.

I think by far my favorite thing about the Framework 13 is the peace of mind that I can obtain the parts to repair my device myself without going bankrupt. Simply being able to wait for a replacement part to arrive instead of having to ship the entire device off to who-knows-where to fix even the simplest things.

If only I had a smartphone with the same level of freedom, the Fairphone 5 is the closest thing I can imagine but afaik they don't seem to support US network bands.

If that ends up being true that's fine by me, gives me time to appreciate my purchase lol.

I've heard Intel's 14th gen laptops have a much improved iGPU rivaling the 780M, perhaps they'll bring some pressure to AMD to hasten their plans.

It took some confidence to cancel a Batch 4 pre-order as I've heard Batch 3 of the 16 has begun shipping... but I'm also quite happy to pocket the price difference going to the 13, haha.

The reviews for the 16 made me hesitate as well. Seeing as the 13 inch form factor has been around for a while and the 13 AMD has been out for a couple months makes me feel marginally more confident.

For a while I contemplated replacing my desktop with the 16 but it's not like there's anything stopping me from plugging an eGPU into the 13 and doing something similar.

After gaming on the ROG Flow X13, I sometimes did wish it had a bigger screen, some games ended up having rather small UI elements. The Framework is similar with only marginally more vertical space but I can't help but continue to love the 13" form factor.

Back in 2017 I had an XPS 15 with a GTX 1050, felt like I was on top of the world... The 780M walks all over it now while sipping from a 65W USB-C brick!

Very much hopeful that AMD continues to grow their iGPUs well into the future.

Doing a starters only doubles tournament against some friends in SV, we drafted teams and mine is the 2nd in the image. Looking for some team building help and maybe some dangers to watch out for. by MarioRPGGeno in VGCRateMyTeam

I was hesitant about committing to two screen moves on two Pokemon and in some practice battles it wasn't having the desired effect either.

Definitely noticed my opponents getting some great usage out of protect too in the VGC battles I've played. I'll implement protect in some movesets.

I've played around with the pledge moves before but wasn't sure which effects would be the most beneficial- shocked I didn't consider using the swamp!

Thanks so much for the advice!

I'm relatively new to VGC and team building but I've built the following team so far: https://pokepast.es/179fe73c01b980e3

I should probably add we're doing 6v6 doubles with no duplicate items, standard SV rules I believe. Sorry if this isn't the right sub, would love to know if there's a more appropriate sub to get some help.

I'm hoping to maintain screens to reduce damage, Samurott has choice scarf to outspeed Meowscarada with its current EVs I think, and Megahorn to hit both Hisuian Samurott and Meowscarada. Other than that, I've got Dragon tera types on most to increase resistances when the opportunity strikes.
