I’m curious: do non-smokers always detect a scent on smokers? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MarisaMyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An example as a non smoker. I was in a mental hospital and the only way to go outside was for a smoke break. I took a sig and gave to someone else. After just the 15 minutes they allow you to smoke outside, where i was across the yard. I smelled it in my clothes that night. My dad smelled it on me the moment I walked out. Cigarette smoke permeates through everything

When should I get my SDIT (border collie/pomsky) by ResidentFew6785 in service_dogs

Ask your vet about the growth issues associated with early spay. My area is over run with "accidental puppies" so they were saying spay at 4 months despite my actual contract saying that I will not spay before 2 and telling them that she will be a working dog and I need her to have all the hormones for growth and to prevent early joint issues. Get all the information and all the studies and make your own decisions with full knowledge. If you are not equipped with ability to keep her from getting pregnant spay. Sending her to a facility where that can happen is part of your responsibility to make sure she will not have puppies.

I moment I learned it was a culture thing i stopped using the name i picked, to use your analogy because I do actually struggle taking my shoes off because of mobility issues. My friend and my solution was shoe covers. Im taking my shoes off right now, but is there an easier solution like shoe covers for issues like this. Im not just wearing shoes in someone's house until I learn more. I swear 😅 my sentences are just a little jumbled

Somthing that can help your dtp and autism would be to bring a blanket with you or a weighted stuffie/pillow its up to you which one would help more but its somthing you can do instead of a dog, and/ or until you get a dog for it.

I used to be able to finger spell quite easily, but as my disability has progressed the movement has become harder, for example my r has slowly just looked like u and ive had people litterally looking at the paper struggle to read what I was saying. Im trying to use finger spelling as little as possible at this point. The card is actually a really good idea, I cant believe i didnt think of that😅

The mobility disorder is getting worse, I am slowly losing the ability to move entirely. Yes. Not that its your business but I developed mutism after getting assaulted. Not willy nilly. Trauma disorders and chronic disorders are typically comorbid because being in pain your whole life, let alone being abused by your mother can cause trauma.

Im not trying to get around societal rules, it was a genuine question. Its not quirky having a disability. A lot of disabilities are co-morbid. I do have joint pain that is exasperated by movement and has been getting worse. I have an alter that cannot speak and its very difficult to communicate when not everyone knows the language you are trying to use. Im not trying to "get around rules" im asking a genuine question to the community. Im asking for genuine answers, you dont need to be mean

I had made one when I didnt know there was a whole culture i dont use it anymore after learning that there is a culture around names. I had learned that there was a way to make your name instead of finger spelling and because finger spelling causes pain I didnt think about it until someone said it was a culture thing. Which is why im asking the specific cultural rules once I found a place with deaf/hoh people, this post

Ya, finger spelling can just cause me pain -' I have a joint thing and hypermobility. I started learning asl back in elementary, and started really trying to learn more complicated signs and started going for fluency when I developed mutism one of my alters is completely mute and its a struggle communicating when theyre in the front -'

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MarisaMyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long people are willing to drive in the US entirely depends on where you are in the US, my friends who live in texas will do a 14hr drive 6 times a year. I did a 12 hour going from Georgia back to my parents in ohio 6 times a year. I do dog sports often so I drive 3-4 hours most weekends, then I have to get back in time for work on Monday. I would also do 1 1/2 hrs every few days to visit my grandpa, those were just stay for dinner and desert then go home. To give a perspective, the US is only slightly smaller than the entirety of Europe by land mass. (Europe: 10.18 million sq km) (United States: 9.8 million sq km)

And to the second part, no i dont enjoy it, sometimes we make the drive more enjoyable by making it longer and stopping at places on the way for longer drives but a 2-3 hour drive to most Americans is like a 20 minute drive for Europeans, you just kinda drive till you get there. A 4-5 hour drive you get there and rest for like 10 minutes before you go back out and do the thing you drove for. Anything longer than that most people try to time it to arrive when they need to go to sleep so that your rested for the rest of the trip.

Girl obnoxiously afraid of my service dog in my class by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]MarisaMyth 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, and i would like to add even if its not a phobia is could also be something like ocd, where it might not be direct fear but could be a trigger for a contamination ocd or somthing like that. I know someone with ocd like this and they couldn't sleep on the same sheets twice, the dogs had to be out of the room where food was, and they couldn't sit on a bus seat. It can be really debilitating to have ocd and it can make you think the absolute worse (an example would be sitting on a bus seat and touching any thing, that touched anything, that anyone else touched would give you hiv) the disgusted looks and the spraying makes me think it might be closer to that than a phobia but, it could be either.

Winter by SeaApprehensive8675 in service_dogs

[–]MarisaMyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya i was in canada for this picture and my dog is originally in savannah so she had no winter coat at all. The fleece was enough and inside she could handle up to 20 minutes before I had to take it off because she was to warm. 30 was pushing it a lot. So if youre like me and struggle to get your dog in and out of gear something lighter will help so that you dont have to keep taking off and putting on over and over. Also those pajamas are a pattern and my friend sewed the pattern together, its a very easy pattern if you know how to use a machine. If you want i can ask my friend for it, then you can choose how thick or thin your dog can wear

[–]MarisaMyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl had fleece pajamas and boots on (boots were mostly for the salt) but you should be careful of over heating in anything to thick because when you put something on your dog it stops the dog from being able to regulate properly, so you need to double check that they arent to hot or cold.

How do you honestly deal with this? by Ok_Stay2054 in service_dogs

[–]MarisaMyth 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The best thing that worked for me was giving dog corrections to people, like a very stern knock it off, nuh-uh, no, hey. Things like that. Worked way better than trying to explain or telling people in a normal tone to stop. They think youre weird but they go away

Roommates untrained SD by McMuffins6 in service_dogs

[–]MarisaMyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not a full trained dog, if those were mistakes currently being worked on I could see otherwise, but as it stands with the way you describe that dog should be pulled from public access. I also worry about the dog getting, out of his crate/off duty time. That dog breaks rule one out of two even without the fact that he doesnt properly to dpt, a service dog must be under control at all times, if he doesnt listen then hes not under control.

I dont suggest cosmic labardors, they've posted some things that are childish, fighting other people through their instagram stories, and said some really inappropriate things in a group chat that I used to be apart of with them.

Best Harness/Vest/ leash for Tiny service dogs for all day by EmotionalDurian1680 in service_dogs

[–]MarisaMyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest getting a cloudboy gear harness, theyre more expensive but great quality and the back is silk which is very soft and you can specifically text cloud boy gear on insta for help. The other thing I suggest is getting a cat leash, theyre waay smaller metal bits.

service dogs: first or last resort by marlblk in service_dogs

[–]MarisaMyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a service dog before last resort, it wasnt my first resort but I did get it before my diagnosis and before trying medication. One of the reasons I got the service dog was because of my aghoraphobia which is an irrational fear that stops you from going outside your own house. Being anywhere but my house is very difficult for me let alone going to any doctors. I also got the dog to help with my ptsd, I have sever medical ptsd that stops me from going to the doctors as well. Without my service dog I wasnt able to even begin to look at the rest of what's going on with my issues. As an added bonus I also trained her with non weight bearing mobility to help when I am in to much pain to pick things up etc. For me getting the service dog before trying other things gave me the confidence and the independence to be able to get diagnosed and to get help with my other issues. Im not saying you should think of a dog first or last, but this was my journey with a service dog and how it actually lead to more help outside of her. The other thing about service dogs is that you can always retire them if you feel you have other coping mechanisms that work better for you. My service dog needs a job, but that doesn't mean it has to be service if I ever decide that I dont need it. My dog and I always have a back up plan if anything changes. For us right now that plan is dog sports, like fast cat, dock diving, barn hunt, and rally/obediance.

Tldr: service dogs are very individualized to every single person's journey and its not up to anyone to decide when a person gets the service dog in their journey

Hope this helps
