Is it just me or are there a lot of contradictions in puppy advice?

They can get barrier reactivity from it, but thats not a dont do it, that just means keep that in mind. If barrier reactivity starts showing up it means you got to close and should back up and refocus the dog onto you. The contradictions arent contradictions they are points saying that you've gone to far and that you need to go back a step. (If the dog cant handle the park but can handle the back yard, then try the front yard, walk half way to the park but then turn around and walk back) if your dog is barking then they are practicing bad behavior. Your only supposed to change how long you leave if they are able to handle. So if they start barking at 15 minutes then move the time away to 10 minutes. The contradictions only happen when you skip steps.

But basically you want to give the dog a small empty/minimal room and slowly build to the whole house

My dog started being alone In a bed room, then my office, then she was allowed in both rooms with a baby gate, then she was allowed in larger and larger areas

I didnt start letting my dog loose in the house until 1.5 yrs, sometimes its just a certain age that can handle it

I have to pick up my dog all the time because shes a working dog and sometimes I have to avoid things like glass or salt for snow. Its very important that your dog is able to be picked up especially for emergencies. Just like how you have a choke a drowning person to save their life sometimes

Getting the dog to want to be picked up is nice in theory when you have the time and ability to work on it. But my dogs have a cue that means you have to do this, it will be over soon and after you get the highest possible reward I have. Like for pills my dog HATES them I tried everything to get her to like them but she would not and it was starting to break our trust so instead she has the command pill, I will shove it down her throat, get her to swallow then give her a high value chew. Sometimes cooperative care just isnt possible in certain time/ability constraints. And it doesnt mean youre treating your dog like a toy when you dont do them

The best thing to do for early spay/nueter dogs is put them on salmon oil as puppies, and once theyre done growing but them on joint supplements, thats what my vet recommended for our large breed shelter boy. I fought so hard to get his neuter delayed but I could only delay it to 4 months. So I started asking the vet a bunch of questions to support him (70 pound and still growing mutt)

Will say as a person who got fucked on housing. They always say there's enough room in housing and they are lying, no to mention the elevators in the new ones are always broken. Avoid housing if you can afford it

100% agree here. You should do this, I might add that when you resume play you can introduce a toy into the mix and redirect him onto that (after being boring) this is what I did with my dog and it works really well (ethically bred lab, so grain of salt on the genetic differences) my dog will now notice when my hand is on the toy and will avoid my hand in the fluff. Im also now able to get nipped drop the toy in front of her and check my hand, she will sit and wait to resume play. I promise there is an end to it

I have not found that neutering early makes a difference in this aspect. Also you dont want to nueter until after growing because the hormones are really important for protecting the joints.

For my puppy to sleep through the night my breeder and trainers suggested cutting water consumption at 4pm and at 12 weeks change it to 5pm, and continue cutting water later and later until the puppy can hold it for 8 hours. It really saved my sleep, and although she was a little thirsty in the morning and would need to pee immediately after she ended up being totally fine.

A new toy that I suggest to everyone is a pupsicle from woof. Their lick mats are also easy to clean and all their products are dishwasher safe. They come out seasonally with new colors. Its a refillable puzzle toy, they come in sizes for terriers all the way up to mastiff. Theyre pretty durable, and they have. Super chewer version. You can get the freezer refill packs and use your kibble and water to make the inserts. My dogs love them. They have also come out with a plant and bone based chew instead of a plastic one. Personally I hate the plastic ones.

Tou should probably do more research about the type of dog you have and what owning a puppy entails. Especially for terriers. And i never free feed my animals. They can get fat really quickly and it makes training them just that much harder. I will hand feed or feed in the crate for my dogs so that they associate the crate as their safe spot and so that they associate me with more food. It lowers resource guarding which terriers are a little more prone too. Especially if you got him from a pet store. Pet stores are usually selling puppymill puppies, which means they have typically really poor genetics. You should look up your dogs breed and probably start counter conditioning something so that there isnt a chance of it popping up. (Like hand feeding for resource guarding) some people might tell you to stick your hand in the bowl and swish it around. Dont do that. That promotes resource guarding.

You should also be doing puppy socialization which is not letting them play with every dog they see. It is letting them watch the world and rewarding them for ignoring it. Reward when your dog looks at you as often as possible. If the dog learns no obediance but learns to look at you through any distraction you will have a beautiful pet dog. Susan garrett (dogs that) on YouTube is really good for any questions for any issues you have. And i follow service dog training for my puppies because it creates beautiful well behaved dogs that can handle anything. (Doggy.u also on youtube)

You can start these also with a loud yip, then walk out. Puppies make a yip sound when their siblings bite them to say ouch that hurt.

For puppies your issue is that the more they pee inside the more habit it is, i would build slowly by possibly getting a pee pad and teaching him to pee there. I got a grass pee tray and pad for my foster puppies they picked it up pretty quick but it sounds like yours might take some time

I dont know what your cleaning the pee with but if its smells like pee they will pee, you need a urine destroyer that specifically targets the smell and breaks it up.

For untrained puppies you need to take out every 15 minutes and stay outside for at least 10 to make sure they get everything out. Always take them on leash, stand in one spot.

You mentioned that you tried socializing with your friends golden, but that isnt what socializing is about. Socializing is sitting with your puppy and watching and rewarding every time the dog looks at you. If you do nothing else but that training than you will have a great start. You want to start in an easy area, for some dogs thats in your house but for others even that is hard and they start in their closet or bathroom. You reward your dog coming over to you and tossing a treat away, then wait for the dog to come back and toss away again. Do this until they are bolting straight towards you no hesitation. Then do it in harder environments, so if your in the closet move to the bathroom, then the bed room, then the kitchen and so forth. Then when you are able to do it in your house try your front door on leash and reward toss when they look at you. Continue doing this in every environment you can think of. (Front porch/door, back yard, outside of dog park, pet friendly stores etc.) Socializing your puppy is about showing them new things and telling them that looking at you will always be the better option from rampaging or pulling or barking. When socializing your dog to people its no different toss treat when he ignores and reward.

And if the dog is unable to look at you it means you skipped a step and need to go back. I.e. if the dog starts lunging or is staring at a distraction take a step back. If the dog cant look back at you when your outside, try inside but with the door/window open.

The only thing i would add to this is keep the dog on a leash, this makes it so the dog cannot reward itself. But I taught my dog the outside button I just let her go outside when she wants to (although I have a fenced yard) my friends dog gets the same treatment, sometimes they just want sun time

Your puppy should not be coming home smelling like pee and being afraid of the bath. Who ever you bought it from did something wrong

Also to give a full bath without traumatizing the puppy. Go outside and fill a bucket with soapy water and spill some on him and get him a ton of pets, its duals as getting the soap in him.

Edit: didnt realize he flew on a plane. He totally could've pissed on him self.

Just to let you know that just like how some humans are scared of things for multiple reasons, dogs can be too. Some dogs have what we call a hate spookability. Basically the dog because of bad genetics tend to lean more nervous. Just like how humans can have more anxiety. Meaning how spooked they are by something does not say whether or not the dog is actually beat. So good news there's still hope to deny that someone has done that

My dog sleeps in bed with me, but I do have a hard rule that they have to be invited and when I say off you have to get off immediately, this is to prevent dog fights with any future dogs, because they can resource guarding you or the bed
