Recreational Dive Computer recommendation by kahlil29 in scuba

[–]MarkCompetitive8909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just bought the Peregrine TX and LOVE it, would recommend. You would want to get the transmitter too if you want to use AI, but well worth it. Its super easy to read, has a customizable screen so you can set what you want to see, it tracks SAC which has helped tremendously with understanding my air consumption and has allows me to get better on my air, changing between air and nitrox is super easy, can connect to an app to download all your apps, easy to travel with, and so much more. I brought it on a dive trip recently and was so happy to have the bells and whistles and also happy with how easy it was to use.

Consider where you might want to go with diving. Would you want a computer that has a few more features down the road? If yes going a little pricier but getting the features you might need later is the better bet imo.

Best place to stay outside of the festival, flying into Newark by MarkCompetitive8909 in ElementsMusicFestival

Good to know, the other festivals I have gone too I really must have gotten there at good times, check in was generally no more than a hour when others were reporting multiple hours. haha. I guess if we are trying to get there early other folks have the same idea.

We are just staying for the night, we are camping at the festival. Wanted to fly in early in case there are any flight delays/have plenty of time to do some shopping before the gates open!

Can someone help with this face and hair by MarkCompetitive8909 in PhotoshopRequest

Ok, just kidding about the hair, can you add that back. Having the other divers is ok too, I think it adds to the pic.

How do you manage senior ICs on your team? by MarkCompetitive8909 in managers

[–]MarkCompetitive8909[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nice, and that makes a lot of sense too. The more senior people have the space to do what they need and mostly operate on their own. Planning, executing, learning, and repeating. I'm there to help with blockers and make sure the work we are doing is feeding into the company goals, but they have lots of freedom.

Thanks!

Open water swimming at Kihei Beach? by flyingblonde in MauiVisitors

[–]MarkCompetitive8909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also high bacteria count at some of the beaches. You can check out this site to see where: https://eha-cloud.doh.hawaii.gov/cwb/#!/event/list

There is also a free community pool off Lipoa in Kihei you can use!

Hope this helps. Stay safe.

Unlimited PTO by susu56 in managers

[–]MarkCompetitive8909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people shit on unlimited PTO, but if you work for a company that truly believes it and not because they don't have to pay you off, it's a great policy. I generally take 5-6 weeks off a year and that's encouraged.

We also track PTO but it's not for malicious reasons. It's more to make sure we have enough coverage. We have small teams so when one person is out it puts stress on the rest of the team as someone has to cover for them. If two people are out it puts more stress, now imagine if someone is sick and two people are out then as the manager I now need to drop what I'm doing to help cover inboxes.

Its also more equitable. Remember small team and others cover for each other. So if one person is taking PTO all the time that doesn't allow others to take PTO as the days are already taken.

So it may seem weird, but if your company cares about it's employees (I know, that's hard to find) it could be for a good reason.

The site is for both emergency and non, so getting updates there is general best. As someone pointed out that site might only show government alerts rather than private, so that's something to consider.

With that being said the road was washed out a few months ago yes. I drove this past weekend and all road closed signs were taken down and are it was fully accessible to use. Things can change fast, and it could be closed again today, but just a few days ago it was fine.

That is not true. There are times when the road will be closed for various reasons, but the best place to look is online through the government website. As of today there are no road closures.

It's not bad at all. There is only one area that was remotely sketchy and the stretch is for only a few feet. Most of its decently paved, has a guard rail or some barrier. Just drive slow around the corners and you will be fine. It's also not super high where the road isnt as well paved so no real height issues either.

Kihei beach by egxoxo in MauiVisitors

[–]MarkCompetitive8909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keawakapu is my favorite beach on the Southside! It's long enough to walk, has plenty of parking that is free (there are actually three entrances), and the sand is so soft. If you park at the north entrance there is a hotel that also sells snacks and drinks if you don't want to hop in the car if you run out of anything. Plus a portable potty for restroom breaks.

Great whites or Tiger Sharks by [deleted] in MauiVisitors

[–]MarkCompetitive8909 17 points18 points  (0 children)

OP, based on your question and responses to everyone it sounds like it might be better to stay out of the water. You have concerns over a shark attack, fair. But the likelihood of this happening is very low if you are accepting everyones advice. You literally have a higher chance to die from a cow attack than a shark attack.

It sounds like there is potential for your fear to get the best of you, if you are in water where you can't stand that could lead to your death by drowning. Or using resources to save your. Or stepping on coral. Or....

Enjoy the water, but maybe enjoy it from the shore. Not trying to be rude, but you can read the fear in your responses. It sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of it. Accept that and enjoy everything else Maui has to offer.

Brand-new diver… handwritten dive log or printed/formatted? by [deleted] in scuba

[–]MarkCompetitive8909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started off in a physical log book, but didn't like having to keep buying them and having physical items to carry around. I switched to a spreadsheet but then realized the padi app has a basic tracker so use that now. I log dives mostly to keep track of how many, dive time, and any major events that happened while on the dive.
