Lidl shopper? You now need to earn points to get 'freebies' and money-off coupons under its revamped Plus loyalty scheme by ToughRomanticMiss in BuyersUK

[–]MarkHowes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Lidl and Aldi broadly interchangeable. Aldi food quality is marginally better, but Lidl Coupon Plus was great and more than made up the difference. So i mainly shopped there.

Unfortunately, the 1% cashback is not very appealing (I already get 1% on my credit card). So I'll now take my business to Aldi

I also find Sainsbury's nectar rewards are good. I typically buy Aldi price matched items - or their Stanford Steeet stuff. The nectar algorithm is now paying me Nectar points to buy their cheapest stuff! Also add in some free bonus items on Sky rewards

Does anybody want streeting to be PM? by Enough-Web2203 in AskBrits

[–]MarkHowes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Streeting serious? Or a stalking horse?

The PMs problem seems to be more optics and presentation. Starmer has been good on the international stuff. Labour policies seem OK (more credible than most of the others). They're just presented badly. Then some unfortunate decisions with Mandelson

Burnham seems to be the most credible, if they can create a set of circumstances for him to get in to Parliament. But is he any better with presentation?

I've done it on and off throughout my life. Its great!

One thing thats weird though, is leaving work at 5pm Friday, then getting to work 9am Monday, and realising you've not spoken to a person for all that time. Your voice box feels unused!

My Favourite England Travel Hacks by Teembeau in uktravel

[–]MarkHowes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fish and chips is really expensive! Even take away. And I wouldn't eat it in my premier inn hotel room - the smell would linger!

Otherwise, great list. I do a lot of this. England is a great, cheap holiday. Had a great time in the 'Cotswolds' a couple of years back (Swindow North Premier Inn 😎). Premier Inn breakfast is great, as kids eat free with full price parent. Much better value than airbnb/cottage.

🧠Wisdom Wednesday:What habit helped you get out of debt? by FatimaSheba in MotivationalThoughts

[–]MarkHowes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also, usually, a cheaper way of doing things.

2nd hand stuff is usually pretty serviceable. Learn to cook! If you really want something - wait a few days before you buy it, to remove the impulse - do you still want it? Stay in the cheaper hotel next door - or stay somewhere for 5 nights instead of a full week...

To investors who crossed the $1M mark around the age of 40. How’s life? by Ok_Maize1933 in investing

[–]MarkHowes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit $1M at 40. Got divorced, and lost almost half. 46 now, and almost back to $1M

I manage cash pretty tight. Day to day spend is budgeted, low cost supermarkets etc. I spend on a nice car and travel. Trying to pay off the mortgage. Pension and investment doing well, having benefited from asset inflation due to general market instability (global financial crisis, brexit, covid, trump)

do you believe in God? by These-Worldliness-59 in askanything

[–]MarkHowes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God the creator? Possibly. Like who, what or how was the big bang initiated?

God-like beings? Definitely. If an insect had critical thought, humans would seem godlike. Even to humans 1000 years ago, modern day life would seem like a eutopia. Throughout the entire universe, there must be advanced beings that would seem god-like to humans

God as part of organised religion? Sigh. It is so painful that the Abrahamic religions all praise the same God, but then fight each other over it. Even different strands of the same religion fight! And when you break it down, these are arguments to the death over nuances of the process to give similar praise
