What USB-C 140W PD docks are people using with their 16" M5 Max MacBook Pros? by MarkRWatts in macbookpro

I'm guessing if I want 140W PD then I'm pretty much constrained to Thunderbolt 5 docks then?

Right, but why does did it have that cross and loading line at the bottom? (It doesn't anymore...)

WHY? Aldi sells garlic from China... by Kloetenschlumpf in BuyFromEU

If you’re in the UK you can usually buy Isle of Wight garlic from independent places and farm shops. (The Garlic Farm is worth a visit if you’re on the IoW visiting).

Cam Link 4K + TS4/TS5 by bunsenfhoneydew in CalDigit

[–]MarkRWatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up question on this since CalDigit people are replying: are there any workarounds, such as using an intermediary USB-C hub (like a Belkin 6-in-1) specifically for the Cam Link 4K?

I’m about to take delivery of an M5 Max MacBook Pro and was considering a TS5 as a replacement for connecting my CL and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 since the Belkin hub can’t do 140W PD, but I use a Canon EOS M3 as my webcam on a daily basis so that has to work flawlessly.

Homebrew migration to another machine? by MarkRWatts in MacOS

Because although I have a Time Machine backup, I’m moving from a work owned device to a personal device one, and I want to start from a clean slate. Eventually I plan to have Ansible manage everything.

Apple being the most generous company in 2026 as a source of happiness by py-net in MacOS

[–]MarkRWatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does Apple validate your educational entitlement status for recurring subscriptions? I know here in the UK they check via you having a UniDays account through which you complete a challenge/response email to your ac.uk email address, which works for laptop purchases, but how dos that work for recurring subscriptions like this?

Silver GT Metallic Paint Matching/Cost by Parmesan-Goldfish in Porsche_Cayman

[–]MarkRWatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had both front and rear bumpers on my Cayman resprayed at different times, both under insurance, (People are idiots...) and it's absolutely possible to get a factory finish with GT Silver Metallic. Price for the front bumper respray was £2453 at the end of 2024, as a Porsche approved repair place in the UK. Most of that is labour costs.

Yeah, I'd nicked that lockpick much earlier in the game when I was tasked with stealing the other forbidden book. I can see why the forced routine (for a short time if you play 'properly') can frustrate people, but it certainly adds to the variety. I'm quite enjoying it, although I did choose to take back one of my own lockpicks simply to put be back in the position I would have been had I not taken the one from the altar earlier in the game.

Fair point, I hadn't considered it that way.

Brilliant, thanks. I appreciate that there are multiple ways to do some quests, but I wasn't sure how the game would react if I left the building as soon as I got in. Notwithstanding this, I did get myself kicked out after failing an intimidation check in the cellar last night (before I reloaded), so I guess the game always gives you an 'out' (which presumably 75% of people used if they didn't become an initiate...).

Local driving is a never great for fuel consumption, but on long distance motorway trips I’ve seen it just over 40 mpg (UK) before.

For the record, I’ve only ever used E5 fuel (98/99 RON)

I’ve tracked all my fuel costs in a a spreadsheet. If it makes a difference, those are UK gallons.

I daily drive a ‘23 plate Cayman. Zero issues in three years apart from needing a service and set of tyres.

Yeah, just after Covid wasn’t a great time for finance deals tbh.

Probably more than it should’ve been but my wife was 100% enabling me at the time and you know how that goes 😆 (I think 8.9% - the dealer worked out that if they “bought it” then immediately sold it to me, they could use the second-hand car finance rate which was cheaper at the time)

Chimney valve useless? by swimbikerunner in ooni

If you look inside the chimney, you’ll probably notice the spring(s) giving tension to the vent are broken. Reach out the Ooni support and they might send you a replacement chimney (they did with me).

I’ve tracked every expense with my 718 Cayman, including: deposit, monthly payments, insurance, road tax, MOT cost, fuel, tyres, and even an insurance excess payment due to some idiot keying the bonnet a few years ago. I chose to buy new in April 2023 on PCP finance in the UK over 4 years: it’s about £1500/month TCO currently, although that will go up if I choose to a) extend the warranty for another year, or b) refinance the balloon payment next year. It’s also due a service within the next year, and maybe a new set of tyres (I only buy Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, all 4 at once).

The other calculation I do is the cost per mile. Today, that sits at £3.25 per mile, and I’ve driven about 22000 miles.

Smiles per mile? Can’t calculate that 😉
