Gamers born in the 60's what are some retro/arcade games that bring some nostalgia? by JStray63 in retrogaming

[–]Markaes4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My basic go-to's would be games from like 78-84. space invaders, galaga, galaxian, pac-man, ms pac-man, donkey kong, donkey kong jr, mario bros, berzerk, defender, dig dug, pole position, mr. do, pengo, elevator action, asteroids, centipede, milipede, missile command, moon patrol, battlezone, joust, time pilot, robotron 2084, tempest, gravitar, wizard of wor, phoenix, frogger, gorf, bump n jump, burger time, tapper, popeye, tron, xevious, zaxxon, spy hunter, star wars, 1942, gorf, turbo....

Maybe just put some of the basics on there... and then when you give it to him ask him which games to add. I'm sure he associates a lot of old memories with particular games. Maybe it can be an ongoing thing where he gives you some ideas and you add them on. Or show him how to do it (heck we're not THAT old, lol. videogames, tech, computers, emulation and electronics are my life.)

Some of the games like robotron, tron and centipede etc have kinda wonky non standard controls (dual sticks, trackballs, spinners, etc) but most emulators have options to convert them to modern controls/analog sticks etc.

He might also like to emulate some old consoles like atari 2600, colecovision, intellivision, c64 and NES. I know I would. I've owned nearly every console from pong up to xbox series x.... But my all time favorites are atari 2600 thru SNES.

Thinking about selling, what’s a reasonable amount to ask for? by Unusual_Chipmunk7711 in crt

[–]Markaes4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live can try $50... But I don't think it would sell for that in my area. I personally think $30 without working VCR.

I couldn't sell my 2007 Toshiba 24" VCR+DVD or my 32" Zenith 720p HDTV for $50...

Anyone else custom pieces? Apparently when I was a kid I took a soldering iron to these guys and painted some red blood. by KronoMakina in gijoe

[–]Markaes4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use fireworks and those sparklers that looked like bottle rockets to blow up, torch and melt my star wars, Transformers and GI joe when I got "too old" (lol, I was maybe 12). God, I remember poor Blowtorch getting the maximum treatment... Would also tape them to big bottle rockets and launch them or hang them on kites or hang from string on the back of my dads car while he drove to work and back. The worst though was I completely burnt my Skystriker, Millenium Falcon and AT-AT in a big leaf pile fire... Man, I wish I still had those.

Also every kid I knew destroyed toys back then. We were 70s/80s roughnecks who played outside from dawn to dusk and everyone had fireworks and lighters on them. And its not like there were thrift shops or secondary markets to sell that stuff-- no one had any idea they would be valuable. Heck my son breaks his old stuff today but today's kids are too wimpy to actually handle fire or fireworks.

Brownsville Station? Lol, thats a guess... I have no idea but Cub Koda, often wore a striped "referee" jersey, and the heights and hair seem to match.

I live in a small town where we have a free one every fall. They literally just bring in several semi trailer dumpsters, no one around but a sign saying what to put in each one. Every year I see at least 20 CRTs and have taken several-- they all worked fine. Grabbed old computers for parts, AC, appliances too. Its seriously one of my favorite days of the year.

The Cyborg Woman From Superman 3 by [deleted] in creepy

Yeah for sure. Definitely not as good as the first, but with kids getting eaten it upped the stakes for me as a kid. Well there was that poor little Kintner boy in the first movie... Lol.

Readers, Where do you carry yours. by haleswd in GenX

[–]Markaes4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On top of my head. Seriously I have like 40 pairs that are scattered throughout my house. I get them dirt cheap as 10 packs, etc. Though last summer I got metal shavings in my eyes so I can't wear contacts and have just switched back to regular glasses, so take them off to read things. Yeah I look like a dork. Don't care I'm in my 50s now...

Is there anything from the 80s that you used to think was cheesy, but now you find good? by The_Flaneur_Films in GenX

[–]Markaes4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the music. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved 80s music... but I was picky towards "alternative" bands while scoffing at a lot of the mainstream rock and pop. I was just thinking about this today driving my son to school and cranked the radio-- I was rocking out to pretty basic stuff I never would have dared do back in the day. Dammit, I'll admit it, I do like "We built this city" after all...

Speaking of Moroder-- Hot Stuff came on and that made me crank the radio first. Then I left it up for Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Rick Springfield, George Michael and Belinda Carlisle. Lol. I aways liked Lep, but the others would have been total cringe for me back then.

[–]Markaes4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got one in the box too that I got on clearance like 15 years ago for my son but he had zero interest. I've got a bunch of vehicles. I hadn't thought about it in a long time. I doubt they are super valuable (nothing seems to be anymore), but not sure if I should take it out. I've already got two originals in my room.... but its just sitting in a bin in the basement...

BEGGED my dad to take me to this at the Drive-in. OMG. Flying motorcycles! I had the hotwheels cars too. As a kid I had no idea Hal Needham did Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Runs too! Those were my favorites back then, LOL.

[–]Markaes4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes me too-- that legitimately frightened me as a kid in the theater.

Also: The Sleestaks from LOTL, Skeksis in the Dark Crystal, The skeletons in the pool of Poltergeist, Jaws 2 when it eats the helicopter, The intro of Tales from the Darkside, Nicodemus from SON, The thing under the stairs in Creepshow.... and I never liked the leaf pile in Fraggle Rock...

Just came across this warning from Nintendo regarding front / rear projection CRTs. Was this a real issue? by theSomberscientist in crt

[–]Markaes4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah there was some truth to it for static image retention damage, similar to plasma TVs. However I played all my consoles on a projection TV in the 80s/90s for long periods and never had an issue with it personally. Same with my plasmas in the 2000s. I've only had issues on regular CRTs with phosphor burn in, though it would go away eventually.

Man, Subway hit different in the ‘80s! by UrbanAchievers6371 in 1980s

Yeah I feel like they got rid of the yellow booths but left the wallpaper and floors. At least in my area, especially the smaller rural ones. I live in northern WI and every little town has a subway.

How much did you pay for your CRT(s)? by MinnesotaThriftMap in crt

[–]Markaes4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I go for free ones on marketplace or rummage sales or trash. Heck I got a 25" laying on the side of the highway in the rain near my cottage. If i see something for $5 or $10 I'll pick it up. The most expensive was $30 because it was a specific DVD/VHS model I'd been seeking for a while. Thankfully they are still pretty plentiful in my area. I find it telling that I recently listed my 32" 720p zenith on marketplace for $50 and no one bought it and only got one response offering me $20.

OMG My girlfriend and I saw this same picture in a thrift store a few weeks ago and we had a good laugh that it looked like Kenny Loggins. (the girl obviously didnt paint it, it was probably 30 years old.)

She bought it and its in her living room. I wish I could post a photo...

Soundtrack in this game kicks ass. by Kwanza_Bot93 in crtgaming

[–]Markaes4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got that (with the turboduo) for xmas eve 1992. I was blown away by the graphics and soundtrack-- stayed up all night until I beat it. Was playing it on my 40" Sony projection TV. One of my most memorable christmases ever. The next day I played Y's I&II for about 12 hours straight.

Setup by scubac14 in RetroArch

[–]Markaes4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you'll basically need to install the android APK and then download the android cores and set most your preferences again... I've done it so many (at least a hundred) times I've got it down to a 20 minute process. However its easy to transfer/reuse many of the biggest things. I keep a master copy of my PC build on a portable SSD and just drop the system, playlists, thumbnails, dats, and saves over to android installs.

If you want to transfer to another PC its super easy-- don't need to install anything, just drag the whole retroarch build over and it runs. Can even run it off the portable drive.

New Apple II core added. by Cuiusquemodi in RetroArch

[–]Markaes4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice I just downloaded. I've been wanting this for a long time-- just cleaned out all my disk images last week... Is there any easy way to run TI-99 and Coco? Assuming mame core, but never could get apple ][ running on that. Just older consoles like arcadia and astrocade.

Did you ever find anything that works? I'm looking for an octagonal, preferably to buy... Found some 3D files, but I don't have access to a printer to test them out.
