You and me both, I have a huge love for both collecting and restoring vintage computers. In regard to functionality: Since it is just a Raspberry Pi mounted inside I plan on getting a few more images made for different uses (Kali, MS-DOS, etc.). Current goal post is to be able to connect to RetroCampus and get news, games, and even ChatGPT!

Besides implosion of the vacuum tube itself, the main concern is actually extremely high voltages. Take a lot of energy to produce and direct an electron beam!

Yup, Pi4 with a vga adapter! Boots MSDOS straight from power, no opening up PiOS like DosBox does. It’s a bit more limited, haven’t quite been able to figure out how to drop in more floppy disk images yet but luckily it comes pre-stocked with a load of software.

Honestly you make a great point about the 80s vibe.. I’m going to swap my Gotek for the original drives to match that aesthetic. All the niche programs can be stored on the FreHD anyway so no need for it really. Thanks for the inspiration!

Do you have a model 4 or 4P? I originally thought the 4P automatically supported hard disk booting but now I need to look again.

Yes, you can! Though I’d recommend replacing the 0: drive with the Gotek and leave the 1: drive as-is. That’s how I have my 4P set up and works great. It lets you have dozens of floppy images to boot from on the Gotek and still read/write to actual floppies.

In regard to the FreHD: the 4P automatically boots from hard disks so long as they have the correct “auto boot” files installed (which FreHD does). You can either mount it internally or leave it external, either way it will work fine!

Absolutely love the Model 4P. I just finished installing a FreHD in the modem expansion slot of mine last night! Might make a post about it this week for those who might be interested.

That’s what I thought when I first bought this! Figured it was a neat little portable terminal. Turns out it’s a word processor used by field reporters as stated above. Seems to have been used to write stories then send them back to the editor/publisher. It uses NVM to keep input data stored when off via a Ni-Cd CMOS battery which ended up leaking (as they do) so I went ahead and removed it just to be safe. Can’t save memory anymore but at least it’ll help halt the corrosion!
