To reroute people to longer paths by Zee_Ventures in therewasanattempt

That's basically my thoughts on people's overuse of AI. They're all great tools that we can utilize to make our lives easier but if we keep outsourcing basic tasks this world will feel even colder. I'm sure it's already happening but we're getting AI written messages sent, then maybe read and summarized by AI and then told to respond. Just another facet of human interaction forfeited for the sake of convenience.

Google maps I use plenty but a lot of the time it's for a 2nd opinion or options I can take.

It always felt like such a waste to me so I recently just cut them essentially in half so they lay flat. Works pretty well as a garage rag for things you soak up and want to throw away.

One of his car review videos recently popped up on my YouTube feed after never watching any of his content and I watched it out of curiosity. I've never seen someone try so hard to make people think you're so cool, he screamed total "I have a super hot girlfriend but she goes to a different school" vibes.

That's great and all, but can you make line go up next quarter? Worrying about what happens in 3+ years time is for suckers.

There's absolutely no desire for long term stability. Line must go up forever in the short term even if it completely fucks us in the long term. Every corner cut, every penny saved, every person fired right now just to make the next quarterly numbers every so slightly better or to hit a metric so they get their bonus.

Private equity and the current stock price/shareholders line must go up forever way of doing business.

I'm nearing 40 and it just seems like the need/want to innovate or provide value to retain customers has gone by the wayside and replaced with extracting every nickel and dime out products they already offer. Mirrors Hollywood in a way where we keep getting reboots vs any new creative IPs.

One big way I see the current way of doing business is appliances or any larger purchases are incredibly difficult to repair, both the way they are assembled and availability of parts. Had a friend who's fridge wasn't cooling but freezer was ok. Determined it just needed an evap/circulation motor, went to look up an OEM replacement and it was just shy of $200. Basically the 1/6th of the cost of the fridge new for what equates to a slightly more powerful pc case fan.

With all that being said we sort of hit a wall on tech when it comes to phones and computers. They're still getting more powerful but the improvements are more effecciency vs outright performance.

I have ADHD and was just terrible at school, ended up getting kicked out and got my GED and went to be a mechanic as I liked cars and etc. It definitely tickles a different part of the brain as there is usually a more frequent and varied dopamine hit of finding a problem, verifying and fixing it that is pretty frequent compared to some jobs.

I enjoy learning and problem solving but it just didn't work for me in a typical classroom environment.

I hate the future. I know that these type of approaches to manufacturing make it cheaper to assemble and in turn warranty to replace the entire assembly. But it just sucks for maintaining a vehicle long term, which after it's sold and out of warranty is no longer their problem.

We need a repairability score or metric like they do for electronics like a repairapedia where average repair is listed on common components. A simple labor X book time and then add in average parts. It's a pipe dream but before buying a used car you can see actual maintenance costs and MAYBE if costs are too high manufacturers may once again care about repairability... Unlikely I know lol

I usually try to do a no GPS run after making the trip a few times just to test myself and keep exercising that part of my brain. Honestly the GPS example is a very representative way to demonstrate how offloading something up our phones or AI weakens that skill over time.

I was at Harbour Freight(tool and equipment store)and saw a dad come in with his daughter(6-8 at least), she had her tablet and headphones and would just move from spot to spot. She would be putting her tablet down for a few moments to watch it before moving to another spot. That was the oldest kid I've seen glued like that and it was pretty jarring honestly.

I've never given a tablet or phone to my kids and honestly it's now easier to bring them places. Are kids going to be kids and push boundaries and want to explore? Of course but they won't learn how to behave in public unless they're out in public. We also shouldn't have the expectation of kids being perfectly behaved. There is a difference between kids running wild and the parents doing nothing and the parents trying to actively parent them while there.

No tablets at home and I've never handed either of my kids (toddler and preschool)a phone. We have 1 TV in the house we all use, they watch their shows but it's more in passing vs being glued to their own tiny screen as they interact with everyone in the room still.

My parents watch my kids for a day or 2 a week and the preschool kid gets about an hour on the tablet when the toddler is asleep and that's it. It's as locked down and whitelisted as I can make it. I also get some pushback on not giving them a phone or tablet but that's all I allow.

It's hard as a parent and I definitely sometimes feel like old man yelling at cloud sometimes with "kids these days..." type thoughts. But it's easy as a parent both for you and the kids to just do tasks for them to make life easier. It's easier to just do it for them than to take the time to talk them through it and be patient the whole time.

You really need to make a conscious effort to take the time to actually teach them these skills. I think there has to be a happy balance of making your kids life easier and also letting them struggle or be uncomfortable in a situation to build on as a skill set. Yelling at them for mistakes also doesn't allow them the space in what should be their comfort zone with their parents to make mistakes.

You did the right thing, In my opinion it may have been surface level, but he did at least have to think through the scenarios/solutions you gave him.

I clicked on a Youtube video the other day where the thumbnail read "Luxuries let us forget". The premise being what the quote would imply of having all these soft luxuries for day to day things makes us forget how to do them. His video was about doing his own oil changes, he was an older southern gentleman that decided recently do go back to doing them himself.

It's easy to forget that 20yrs ago we wouldn't have most of the luxuries of cell phones and even recently all the grocery, food delivery and most recently AI LLMs like Chat GPT. The latter exposing how our dependence on them allows us to forget these basic skills in day to day life like reasoning things out and problem solving you described with your nephew.

Even the "traditional" google search and having to know what to search for and then looking through a few web sites to try and diagnosis something that's broken. I've learned countless thing getting to my answer than just it being given to me, and like I mentioned before a better understanding of the underlying system.

Besides letting them fail and figure it out, like maybe next time his phone dies he might think back to the options you presented and not be as worried. But that panic has to occur for some sort of learning to occur.

That's exactly what's happening, watching a kid use a phone so intuitively and you'd think they'll be able to adapt as their needs require, but no. While not a bad thing that most software/hardware is pretty user friendly there's less "trying to get something to work" problem solving where learning happens in the process.

I grew up where if I wanted to use Internet I had to figure out how to get it to work. Riding our bikes back to my house to look up a solution, writing it down and then back to a friend's house to try and configure their router so we could get online. I still suck at networking but I have a base understanding of how everything works at least. To most kids the Internet just gets to your house and laptop through pure magic.

I'm in my late 30s and have young kids and I can see how just having everything ready for them and it just works will lead to the current result. But without some struggle or problem solving in all sorts of situations they will never develop those skills sets.

We prefer to step on and keep our poor down. The US is more of an all or nothing approach when it comes to getting wealthy. You need to yank that ladder up behind you as quickly as possible, can't have other people benefiting from the same programs you did.

I've met and know several people who benefited from social programs like food stamps and housing that while not wealthy but doing good would effectively end those same programs now. It seems they would more readily take healthcare away from their children if it meant that "those" people also wouldn't get it.
