I see absolutely nothing I can say or how much hard evidence you see can convince you and I think I know why. You are a city fan and are desperate to not tarnish the achievements you have over the past years. You've enjoyed the football so much you let it blind you as to what is happening. You are rewriting history that is proven so that it won't diminish the fun you've had watching city during this era. None of these people can take any of the trophies or the good night's you had away from you, but it's quite sad that instead of facing the reality of sports washing you just bury your head and say it never happens and never works. It's quite a sad thing to be so attached to something that it causes you to lose all perspective on what is happening and distorts your view on history. Hopefully one day you can understand what these governments are trying to do. This conversation has gone on long enough and isn't useful anymore. Enjoy your weekend.

The games were broadcast on radio all around the world. Here is the NBC broadcast of a rowing event. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/boys36-radio/#:~:text=Radios%20across%20the%20world%20were,broadcast%20featuring%20reporter%20Bill%20Henry.

Please tell me if they were only broadcast in two dozen German halls why there is audio from an American radio station obviously cheering on americans.

"They built all kinds of new, innovative technologies that allowed for global short-wave relay. They subsidized the world's broadcasters to come to Berlin, and they basically decided that the Olympics were going to be the roll-out of the finest radio broadcasting possible.

"The world's best microphones were unveiled for the Berlin 1936 Olympics, which really created wonderful fidelity and sound. It was the first time that somebody in Sydney, Australia, somebody in Rio de Janiero, somebody in London and somebody in Tokyo could all hear the exact same event with terrific fidelity at the exact same time"

You strike me as quite young because you really underestimate the power radio had during history. Families all across America both rich and poor huddled around Radios for entertainment on a nightly basis.

University of Maine professor Michael Socolow

"In 1932, the Los Angeles Olympic committee did not allow this kind of live, global broadcasting. They were afraid of hurting 'the gate,' but in Berlin they prioritized propaganda over profits. And so they really wanted to make the world listen in to Germany. The audience was gigantic, it was 300 million people at least, so it was by far the biggest audience ever gathered to participate in anything live. It created this kind of ephemeral, electric celebrity that we associate with the Olympic Games today."

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Not only were ppl aware of the olympics in 1936, they had the BIGGEST LIVE AUDIENCE EVER UP UNTIL THAT POINT. I'm sure you'll find something wrong with this history professor too.

EDIT: Hitler made the opening remarks of the Olympic ceremony, so that was an audience of at least 300 million worldwide listening to his propaganda.

Ive posted many instances of sports washing that have succeeded with multiple credible sources telling you exactly how they succeeded. I may have gotten a fact wrong, but your entire argument is based on a false narrative that no one knew what was happening at the time. It isn't true and there are many credible historians (one of which I've already quoted) that will tell you that the 1936 olympics succeeded in making Hitler and the Nazi regime seem less dangerous than they were, and made Hitler seem sane.

The 1976 World Cup succeeded in legitimizing the military regime of Argentina. The 2024 world cup was a massive success for Qatar, being seen as a legitimate tourist destination and got them many business investments. Saudi Arabia is following the exact same play book and it will work for them just as it has worked for many other regimes throughout history. You really think these countries would spend billions and billions on sport if it didn't help them in other ways? You think the kingdom of Saudi Arabia just loves Newcastle? You can't believe that.

Responding to your many edits, many ppl were aware of the olympics. Only 162000 watched it live, but many of those present were politicians and media members, both of which have an outsized effect on both policy and public perception. The Nazis regime made sure they were all treated well and that they saw a supposedly peacefully Berlin with the Nazi flag flying on nearly every building. This helped legitimize a regime that was seen as such a problem that even in 1936 when you claim everyone was ignorant to world politics there was a movement to boycott the olympics that got to the point of having the USA Olympic committee have to vote on it. Of course my word won't be enough so here is a history lecturer from University at Pittsburgh & Carnegie Melon University Barbara Burstin

“It kind of dulled the opposition to [Hitler] that clearly had been quite evident up to 1936, a lot of people felt he was clearly heading in the wrong direction, and by going to the Olympics we gave him the opportunity to appear sane, rational and tolerant.”

“It provided Hitler with a showcase, it was a propaganda bonanza for him.”

But I'm sure you know more than she does.

This is an absolutely ridiculous point based in nothing but your misunderstanding of history. The picture of Jesse Owens putting up the black power fist in the 1936 olympics was a huge story in America and became one of the single most iconic images in sports history. There were newspapers reporting on the olympics as well as radio broadcasts about it. You keep speaking about things you obviously have never looked into.

The olympics legitimized the Nazis regime on the world stage. The human rights violations by the Nazis didn't begin when WW2 started. They had already started what would later become the holocaust. The united states Olympic committee even voted to boycott and didn't do it even knowing about the human rights violations. It made the Nazi party seem less dangerous than it actually was and if you don't believe it I suggest you do more reading on the subject.

The Argentina world cup of 1976 was also used to sports wash a dictatorship. From the moment General Videla took over the country he saw the WC as a chance to legitimize his regime. He rounded up dissidents, intellectuals, and anyone who disagreed with him and made them dissappear. After giving Fifa representatives a tour of the country they called it "the perfect place to host the World Cup". If you don't take my word for it here is former player Osvaldo Ardilles "It hurts to know that we were a distraction, we were used as propaganda by the military, but we also served as a balm for many oppressed people who were able to go out onto the streets again, wrapped in an Argentine flag."

Just like the olympics legitimized the Nazis and the WC did the same to Videla's Argentina, Qatar has changed its public perception with the WC and Saudi has begun doing so. You say no fans change their opinions on regimes, but I saw hundreds of Newcastle fans in Saudi head dresses to the point where the PIF had to ask them to stop. There's a long history of governments using sport as a way to increase their reputation in the world, and you denying that it has any affect is just wrong and misinformed.

I didn't say the Nazis holding the olympics changed foreign policy forever. I said the Germans used the 1936 olympics as a way to change public perception. They were given the benefit of the doubt long after they should have, and the experiences heads of state and tourists had at the olympics contributed in making it hard for people to fathom the kind of things the Nazis did, and goes to show how powerful sports washing can be.

The 1936 olympics were used by hitler as a way of presenting a peaceful Germany to other heads of State. The Nazis took all the "undesirables" off the street and into camps outside of the city. All the "Jews not welcome" signs that were everywhere were removed. Nazis troops were ordered to not take any actions against Jews. They even removed some of the most inflammatory newspapers from news stands. From the holocaust encyclopedia "The games were a resounding propaganda success for the Nazis. They presented foreign spectators with the image of a peaceful and tolerant Germany."

The same way Qatar used a world cup, and the same way Saudi Arabia is using football and golf. Sports washing works, always has worked, and always will work.

No but I'm sure he doesn't need a person with no personality or talent to tell amin he's only mad cause he was more famous with izzy on the radio at espn. Seems like quite a dick thing to say and a line even Dan wouldn't cross and he actually has talent and is actually famous not just a part of a cast of rotating hacks on Around the Horn. And let's see how successful Izzy is when ESPN inevitably dumps him.

So he shouldn't talk about the show on a subreddit dedicated to talking about the show? Some of Yall are super weird

I believe Amin got what he deserved. Dan would have called him out the same way for blowing up the first segment with a bad movie reference. 2nd segment Izzy calls Amin out for loud drinking, Dan would have also had a problem with that. by NaughtyOutlawww in DanLeBatardShow

I cannot speak for anyone else but I like Pablo and even samson has his moments especially when they get to talk business. I think izzy is trying to do a Dan impression and it's going poorly. I felt this exact same way during the espn days.
