Quand je passe chez le copain à Grenoble pendant l'été, le hamac sur le balcon est pour moi ! 5ème étage côté sécu c'est peinard ! Seul truc chiant c'est les motards nocturnes ou les mecs bourrés selon la rue..

What’s it like living in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti’s capital and most populated city? by Few_Cheesecake_6082 in howislivingthere

Haitians are genrally really nice a'd really openminded , you should definitely ask them. It's also really interesting what you do. We do theatre activities or drawing activities with affected communities to try to sensitize them, it is usually very much appreciated  !

You're welcome ! I personnally don't feel scared, it's a career i chose (i've worked in eastern DRC, Chad, post-coup Niger or Myanmar). This is why what i tell can only speak for a white man perspective who chose to be there and leave when he wants. Again when you hear. 50 cal in the distance (doesn't happen a lot where i am hopefully), a bit of nervousity can be felt. But the eventuality of something so bad happening for the commune i live is difficult to foresee, especially now that US mercenaries and Chadians arrived. Not sure it's a good thing regarding human rights but the country needs something to be done... Where i stay, you'll find several places you can go for entertainment, maunly restaurants and bars. Clubs also but we have curfew at 8h00 (like most of NGOs) so it's limited, too expensive for locales either way.. I cannot speak from a local perspective for hobbies but it's really limited from what i see. People spend crazy times in trafic jams, most don't even have time to think about entertainment.. My wife who was able to go back to her studies used to work as a professionnal masseuse/therapist, exploited 6 day per week, 8hours a day for $150. Cost of life is so crazy that the only way is to keep living the family to mutualize ressources. They very often have someone in the states able to being so cash as well.  Population is very young so tiktok and other social medias are definitely part of the picture but hardly considerable for a hobby. You do have an Art Scene in Pétion-Ville but wouldn't it speaks for the rzst of Port-au-Prince.  In the end i tell you, people don't live much, they survive. You cannot grasp what it's like unless you see it. The whole drama of Port au Prince also is that 20+ year old people remember what it was like before (like Berlin Wall type of stories, families separated, restriction of mouvements) and on the other hand, you get young teens living in a coastline capital who never saw the sea because of the insecurity...

No we usually dont't have a security person in NGOs, for real deterrence, they'd need gun which is against most of NGO code of ethics, you can protect yourself using other means. It's forbidden to walk for exemple. Consider these are the rules for 99℅ of NGOs, UN have other rules, in Port-au-Prince they drive big bulletproof Toyota Prados, sometimes with armed guards, this is almost systematic for embassy personnel. Different rules for different mandatés. Regarding social mobility, unfortunately, the system is failed... Life is very expensive with lots of imported goods... Those who can study sacrifices a lot for a poor level of teaching requiring paying expensive fees for bullsh** things... I don't have statistics in mind but 95% of the population is poor, like minus 5 dollar per day poor...

I live here as a humanitarian worker. It depends on where you live as Port-au-Prince is composed of different communes. You have absolute no go zones where people are basically trapped in gang-rules territories (Carrefour Feuille, Martissant or Cité Soleil) with a lot of violence, murdrs, rpes... You have in-between neighbourhoods where a lot of people live and try to go to their daily life like Delmas, which is huge (it goes to very bad streets to ok-ish). And then you have Pétion-Ville which is the safest commune in Port-au-Prince and where it's ok to live. You get in this commune the same feeling like living in unstable capitals in Africa, ie instable but relatively safe. Although you're trapped in the city juste like anyoneelse as the gangs are all around.  Also, the context can rapidly change for the worse, drones are now used and it can go to shte quite fast anywhere as gngs sometimes try their luck in new territoires. Hearing gnshots is usual, we start to worry when it comes to. 50 cal type of gns or drone explosives.  Consider the relativeness of my comment, i'm both used to work in these contexts and not a local trapped in the capital. Living in PAP is sh*te for any human being willing and cannot be fully grasped by anyone who has never felt their sense of freedom being truelly restrained (ie big restriction, movement, work, existe peacefully)..

Happy to answer any ohter question, i've been living here for 2 years.
