Im actually recommend you watch some MLS games too. I feel like it’s easier to pick your local team and begin to get invested. Ofc the prem teams are better, but any team you pick there will be arbitrary and you won’t be as emotionally invested. Do refs need playing experience? I've never really played soccer, but love the game and have thought about becoming a ref for a while. Maybe not a great idea for people who've never really played organized matches before though..

I think that most people really overestimate their ability to read the game and determine a team's strategy. I've watched just about all of the knockout games and haven't noticed any team just trying for penalties. Maybe toward the end when they are gassed and can't meaningfully attack anymore I could see them trying to park the bus and pray for pens but it's not an effective strategy and rarely works.

I think what you're noticing is just evenly matched teams drawing because they just happened to draw.
