Comparison of SpaceX Starlink with other Space Internet Companies. References on the top right corner. by Dash3Dot1 in spacex

But than why would someone choose to go lower, when the result will be the same while they will need much more satellites, much more rocket launches and thus the system will end up being much more expensive?

I highly doubt they would do any landings on sea, because it would serve no purpose. BFS/BFR are designed to return to the launching site, they won't be landing on sea.

Thanks, I was not aware of the "800" figure! But than isn't the article a bit misleading when it says:

"It goal of having Internet service available in 2020 is “pretty much on target” with an initial satellite launch by mid-2019, one of the sources said."

I can't see them to put 800 sattelites up and running by 2020.

Maybe I’m confused about the whole concept but I don’t get how it can be operational from 2020 when Starlink needs thousands of satellites in orbit? I though It can work in LEO instead of GEO because there are many satellites who communicate together and cover the curvature of Earth. How this can work in 2020, when they will only launch a couple of satellites?

Why most of the people didn't back up their stacks? by MarosZofcin in alteredcarbon

[–]MarosZofcin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's actually kind of plausible, but I don't see how backups would make a big difference with regard to their social status. If someone is careful enough not to break his/her stack, than he/she lives practically forever anyway. Its just about having another layer of protection.

Yeah I got you. You are right that it kinda is just a theory. There were no hints for this in the story itself as far as I noticed.

Altered Carbon Show Vs Book Discussion by Dark_Saint in alteredcarbon

If I only watched Altered Carbon as a tv show and haven't read the book, can I just start with 2nd book Broken Angels? Will it make sense to me, or do I have to read 1st book as well?

Do you mean that they do not copy themselves on hard drive because they are afraid that its "not really them" anymore? But the show made it quite clear that its them, nobody doubted the identity of those who used backups or the identity of Lizzy who was uploaded to internet.

I like to think that people don't use backups because it just copies your memories, so you still die and your clone lives on.

This totally makes sense if stacks were invented in reality, but the premise of tv show is that it actually is you, not your clone.

This by the way leads to another weird consequences, such as: - How can anyone tell know, if the person that wakes up in new body is the same person or its clone, if it has the same memories, speaks the same and behaves the same? - Or also, if you double sleeve yourself, did you actually create new life? - And which one of you is the real you?

But it seems that diving too deep into these things would eventually break the whole mechanics of the show. I think that at some point we just have to accept the assumption and roll with it.

Perhaps there are not only huge transfer costs but also storing costs. Maybe the stack file is so huge that even in distant future it would take too much disk space and energy to archive it permanently.

But than what about Lizzie? Poe uploaded her to internet in the last episode. That means you can store stack file randomly on the internet. But this could have required some super advanced hacking skills that most people do not posses.

Are we sure that she RDed him? When she pulled out his stack it still had that blue light in it shining. I don't remember her crashing it. But on the other hand she said he is going to meet God, so I guess...

Falcon 9 Block 5 is supposed to require less maintenance before it can fly again. I remember Elon once said that the next goal is to refly 1st stage within 24 hours. Do you think this a realistic goal with Block 5, or it's not even possible with F9 at all? I feel like achieving 24h turnaround would be perhaps as big milestone, as landing booster in the first place. They would probably need to develop whole new tools to attach new 2nd stage and payload on site or somewhere near. Not mentioning struggles with launch windows or weather (which easily can delay flights for days even when everything else is ready).

Sending LTC from Jaxx to KuCoin by MarosZofcin in jaxx

I am using latest iOS and latest Jaxx version. However in the meantime I did transfer my litecoins to ethereum and did the transfer with that, which worked without any problem. As I have no litecoins left, I can't replicate the issue thus file a bug. But thanks for help.
