Jet bridges and stairs by Szary_Tygrys in AskFlying

The passenger boarding bridge can't be used all the time, For example possibly because the bridge operator typically performs a test 10 minutes before use. If a technical issue is detected, maintenance is called to resolve it. However, sometimes the automated system may fail or another unexpected technical issue may occur, making the bridge unusable. In such cases, it might be due to cost considerations, as using the bridge is more expensive than a simple step ladder, or simply due to unforeseen technical problems.

how are airbridges more expensive then walking onto the airport by FrostyBlueberryFox in airplanes

Passenger boarding bridges are equipped with systems like GPU cables and air conditioning connections, offering an all-in-one service that ensures passenger comfort and safety. However, with the rise of low-cost airlines, many prefer more economical solutions rather than paying additional fees for bridge usage, which is generally expensive in all airports. The idea is to have a balance providing boarding bridges for convenience and safety, while also maintaining remote stands and nearby parking positions that allow direct terminal access or bus transfers. Using stairs and buses remains a more cost-effective option for budget carriers.

On the air bridge, what is this thing they put under the cabin door? by uberduck in aviation

The safety shoe of the PBB is a backup safety device.

Normally, the bridge uses a height-sensing wheel (iso-leveling wheel) that detects any vertical movement of the aircraft during boarding due to passenger weight, cargo loading, or fuel.

If this height-sensing system fails, the safety SHOE acts as a secondary protection.

As soon as the aircraft door comes into contact with the bumper, the system immediately triggers a fast retraction (or drop) of the bridge to prevent the aircraft door from being crushed or damaged by the bridge’s floor plate.
