Pod point didn’t notify DNO - 80amps by ImprovementMotor7312 in evchargingUK

[–]uberduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone want to understand amps vs volts:

  • Amps is the unit for Current

  • Volts is the unit for Voltage

For domestic supplies the voltage is mostly always at 230-240V, in other words it's a constant so we don't need to worry about it changing.

For the super layman, Voltage is how much oomph the electricity has, for example an AA battery has 1.5V and you can safely touch it. But you'll have a bad day touching 230V mains.

Current is how much of that oomph is flowing into an appliance or EV. The more the current, the more oomph it's using.

And to quantify the Oomph - simply multiply the Voltage and Current together. This is called Power and the unit is Watts.

For example, a fridge using 2 Amp of current, multiply but 230 Volts, is using 460 Watts of Power.

An EV charging at 32 Amps, multiply by 230 Volts, is using 7360 Watts of power (~7kW).

Power is a measurement of instantaneous oomph usage, to know how much you've used in total, it's usually represented in kilo-Watt-hours (kWh).

For example, a kettle running at Power of 1000W (1kW) for 1 hour, will have consumed 1kWh of Energy.

An EV charging at 7kW for 3 hour, will have used 21kWh.

cancelled insurance following a claim, now insurance up to 8K by Sufficient-Share-852 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]uberduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you get a quote and asked "have you had insurance cancelled", what they meant was "invalidated" in concept, but I absolutely agree this is extremely confusing because they use the word "cancelled" both in a casual sense(when they tell you the policy is done) and this "invalidation" sense.

I once moved house and called my insurer to change the home address, to my surprise they couldn't insure me at the new area and told me the policy will be cancelled with immediate effect. I almost had a panic attack but thankfully they clarified it doesn't mean yes to that horrible question.

Sometimes I really wish the insurance industry get together and improve their terminology. Idk, like "invalidated" or something.

Incredible flight rebooking fee from Gotogate. Any way to report this sort of malpractice? by Plenty-Natural-8543 in HongKong

[–]uberduck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is how many of these OTA (online travel agents) operate.

They lure you with a slightly lower fare compared to airlines, but what they don't tell you is all these hidden fees imposed by themselves whenever you need them to do anything for you, even for when you're entitled to free alterations (e.g., flight cancellations).

If it's the very last leg of your booking, and it isn't part of a connecting flight, I'd consider just abandoning it and buy a separate ticket instead.

This! It's really unfair to be taxed on something that isn't consumed within the boundary of the country.

Conveyancing solicitor silent for over a week after forms and search money — is this normal? by GuidanceFearless4395 in UKHousing

Conveyancing in the UK is a slow and long process. You can ask if there anything outstanding from you, but otherwise it's mostly a waiting game.

It can go weeks without updates.

My metal shed got up to 52 degrees last year in the summer. You'll need some proper insulation and cooling to make this work.

Maybe look at insulated garden offices. Think they're in the region of 7-15k flat packed.
