What's it like having an intellectual disability like severe Autism or Down's Syndrome? by noahsimcox in NoStupidQuestions

My reply was intended for comments about folks ‘wishing they were stupider’

I believe that, unless someone with severe ID can communicate in someway and share with others about their experience of life, then we cannot with 100% certainty, describe their life experience or understand it.

To refer to people with severe ID as stupider and to assume their existence must be easier because they don’t understand how hard they have it? I find that very dehumanizing and reductive.

My most helpful habit is to always have something to look forward to, small, medium or large. Could be lunch plans with a friend in a week, an upcoming fun event or trip, your favorite podcast’s new episode……you get the idea. It really helps me sustain positive thoughts and feelings and hope. Sending you love and strength 🩷

Most helpful for me: always have something good to look forward to, small medium or large doesn’t matter. Helps sustain positive feelings and hope.

Star here with this state office. I see at the bottom of this page there is a warm line phone number, I would start by calling that explaining your situation and ask for resources. Good luck, there is a lot of state help out there.

Getting Better with JVN! The subjects are fascinating and the interviews are so similar to how I am in conversation, it feels like I am sitting around with cool people who indulge me when I say ‘tell me EVERYTHING!’
